Chapter 39 - accident

Chapter 36: The Accident

The Morning

It started like any other morning.

Sunlight streamed through the windows of their room. Keifer's arms were around her. Warm. Safe. Perfect.

Jay stretched slowly. Pressed closer to him. Listened to his heartbeat.

He stirred. Pulled her tighter. Kissed her hair.

"Morning, Mrs. Watson."

She smiled. "Morning, Mr. Watson."

He opened his eyes. Those storm-gray eyes soft and sleepy. "What's on the schedule today?"

She traced patterns on his chest. "Meetings. Calls. The usual. You?"

He kissed her forehead. "Same. But I have to go across town. Site visit for the new development."

She looked up. "Across town? In traffic?"

He shrugged. "I'll take the car. Driver. It's fine."

Something flickered in her chest. A flutter. A warning. She pushed it away.

"Be careful."

He smiled. Kissed her nose. "Always."

---

Breakfast

Downstairs, chaos was normal.

Keiran was already eating cereal. Half on his face. Half on Rex. Telling a story about a dinosaur who fought a volcano.

Keigan was reading. Occasionally correcting Keiran's dinosaur facts. Ignored every time.

Percy was stealing bacon from Aries's plate. Aries was threatening him with a fork. Mamma was refereeing. Pappa was behind his newspaper.

Jay sat beside Keifer. Their hands touching under the table. Always connected.

Keiran looked up. "Kuya Kai! Are you going to the big building site today?"

Keifer nodded. "I am, little monster."

Keiran gasped. "With the big machines? The diggers? The cranes?"

"With the big machines. But I'll be inside. In meetings."

Keiran's face fell. "Meetings are boring. Machines are fun."

Keigan looked up. "Meetings are how business gets done. Without meetings, there would be no machines."

Keiran considered. "Fine. But Kuya Kai should at least LOOK at the machines. For me."

Keifer smiled. "I'll look at the machines. For you."

Keiran beamed. "BEST KUYA EVER!"

---

The Goodbye

Jay walked Keifer to the car. His driver was waiting. The morning sun was bright. The city was waking up.

She straightened his tie. "Be careful."

He caught her hands. Kissed them. "I'm always careful."

"You drive too fast."

"I have a driver."

"You distract easily."

He pulled her close. "Only you. Only ever you."

She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. "I love you, Keifer Watson."

He kissed her back. "I love you too, Jay Watson. I'll be home for dinner. Save me some of Mamma's cooking."

She smiled. "Always."

He climbed into the car. She watched it pull away. Waved as it turned the corner.

Something fluttered in her chest. That warning again. She pushed it away.

He'd be home for dinner. He always came home.

---

The Call

Jay was at her desk. Working through emails. The morning was normal. Quiet. Productive.

Her phone rang. She picked it up. Smiled.

"Mr. Watson. Missing me already?"

Silence. Then a voice. Not Keifer. Strange. Professional. "Mrs. Watson?"

Her smile faded. "Yes. Who is this?"

"This is St. Mary's Hospital. Your husband has been in an accident. You need to come immediately."

The world stopped.

---

The Drive

Jay didn't remember getting to the hospital.

Percy was driving. She was in the passenger seat. Aries was in the back. Their faces were pale. Their hands were shaking.

She stared out the window. The city blurred past. Her mind was blank. Empty. Frozen.

Percy grabbed her hand. "Jay. Jay, look at me."

She turned. His face was scared. So scared.

"He's going to be okay. He's strong. He's a fighter. He's going to be okay."

She nodded. Didn't speak. Couldn't speak.

Aries leaned forward. "Mamma and Pappa are on their way. The boys are with the neighbor. Everyone's coming. Everyone's here."

She nodded again. Still couldn't speak.

The only thought in her head: He has to be okay. He has to be okay. He has to be okay.

---

The Hospital

The emergency room was chaos. Bright lights. Sterile smells. Hurrying feet.

Jay ran to the desk. "Keifer Watson. My husband. Mark Keifer Watson. Where is he?"

The nurse looked up. "Mrs. Watson. Follow me."

They walked through corridors. Past curtains. Past machines. Past other people's emergencies.

A doctor met them at a set of double doors. Serious face. Kind eyes.

"Mrs. Watson. Your husband was in a car accident. A truck hit his vehicle. He's being evaluated now."

Jay grabbed his arm. "Is he okay? Is he conscious? Can I see him?"

The doctor hesitated. That hesitation. The one that meant bad news.

"He's conscious. But he has internal injuries. We're taking him to surgery. You can see him briefly before."

---

The Room

Keifer was on a bed. Tubes everywhere. Machines beeping. His face was pale. His eyes were closed.

Jay crossed to him in seconds. Took his hand. Kissed it. Pressed it to her cheek.

"Keifer. Keifer, I'm here. I'm right here."

His eyes opened. Slowly. Those storm-gray eyes. Glassy. Unfocused. But finding her. Always finding her.

"Jay." His voice was weak. Strange. Wrong.

She held his hand tighter. "I'm here. I'm right here. You're going to be okay. They're going to take care of you."

He squeezed her hand. Weak. But there. "Love you."

She kissed his forehead. His cheeks. His lips. "I love you too. I love you so much. Don't leave me. You can't leave me."

He smiled. Small. Tired. "Not leaving. Promised. Forever."

The nurses moved in. "Mrs. Watson, we need to take him now."

She kissed him one more time. "I'll be right here. When you wake up. I'll be right here."

He was wheeled away. The doors closed. She stood alone.

---

The Waiting

Percy found her in the hallway. Standing where they'd left her. Not moving. Not speaking.

He pulled her into his arms. "He's going to be okay. He's going to be okay."

She didn't cry. Couldn't cry. Just stood. Frozen. Waiting.

Aries brought coffee. She didn't drink it. Mamma arrived. Pulled her close. Rocked her. Still no tears.

Pappa made calls. Handled things. Kept the world moving while she stood still.

Mamma led her to a chair. Sat beside her. Held her hand.

"He's strong, Jay. He's a fighter. He survived losing you. He'll survive this."

Jay looked at her. Blank. "He has to. He promised. Forever."

Mamma squeezed her hand. "Then forever it will be."

---

The Hours

Time moved strangely. Hours passed. Or minutes. She couldn't tell.

Percy paced. Aries sat frozen. Mamma prayed silently. Pappa stood by the window, watching nothing.

Jay sat in the chair. Hands folded. Eyes on the doors. Waiting.

She thought about the morning. His arms around her. His voice. His smile. His promise to be home for dinner.

She thought about the warning in her chest. The flutter she'd ignored. The feeling she'd pushed away.

I should have told him to stay. I should have made him stay. I should have—

The doors opened. A doctor emerged. Blood on his scrubs. Face tired but smiling.

"Family of Mark Keifer Watson?"

Everyone stood. Surged forward. Jay reached him first.

"How is he? Is he okay? Can I see him?"

The doctor held up a hand. "He's stable. The surgery was successful. He has a broken leg. Three cracked ribs. Some internal bleeding we were able to stop. But he's going to be okay."

---

The Tears

Jay's legs gave out.

Percy caught her. Held her up. She was crying now. Couldn't stop. Sobs tearing through her chest.

"He's okay. He's okay. He's okay."

Percy held her tight. "He's okay, Jay. He's okay."

Aries came to her other side. Wrapped his arms around both of them. "He's a fighter. Like you."

Mamma was crying too. Pappa had his arm around her. Both smiling through tears.

Keigan appeared. Someone had brought him. He stood quietly. Watching. Then he walked to Jay. Took her hand.

"Kuya Kai is strong. Volcanoes erupt. But they also survive. He'll survive."

Jay pulled him into her arms. Held him tight. "Thank you, Koya. Thank you."

Keiran was there too. Small. Scared. Rex clutched in his hand.

"Kuya Jay? Is Kuya Kai okay? Is he coming home?"

Jay knelt down. Took his little face in her hands. "He's okay, Keiran. He's hurt. But he's going to be okay. He's going to come home."

Keiran nodded. Brave. "Rex will protect him. Rex is the best protector."

Jay kissed his forehead. "Rex is the best. We'll need him."

Keiran clutched Rex tighter. "He's ready."

---

Seeing Keifer

They let her in first. Just her. Just for a moment.

Keifer was in a private room now. Tubes still. Machines still. But his eyes were open. Those storm-gray eyes. Tired. But there.

She crossed to him. Took his hand. Kissed it. "Hey, Mr. Watson."

He smiled. Weak. But real. "Hey, Mrs. Watson."

She sat beside him. Held his hand against her cheek. "You scared me. Don't ever do that again."

He squeezed her hand. "Sorry. Didn't plan it."

She laughed. Cried. Kissed his knuckles. "You promised. Forever."

He looked at her. Those storm-gray eyes. So tired. So full of love. "Forever, Jay. I promised. I keep my promises."

She kissed his forehead. "You do. You always do."

He closed his eyes. "Tired. So tired."

She stroked his hair. "Rest. I'll be right here. When you wake up. I'll be right here."

He was asleep in seconds. She stayed. Holding his hand. Watching him breathe. Thanking whatever power existed that he was still here. Still alive. Still hers.

---

The Family

Mamma came in next. Kissed Keifer's forehead. Cried quietly. Sat beside Jay.

"He's going to be okay, darling. He's strong. He's a fighter."

Jay nodded. "I know. I know. But Mamma... when they called... I thought..."

Mamma pulled her close. "I know, baby. I know."

Pappa came in. Stood at the foot of the bed. Looked at his son. His strong, stubborn, impossible son.

"He gets it from me," Pappa said quietly. "The stubbornness. The refusing to die."

Jay looked at him. Smiled through tears. "He gets the love from you too. And Mamma. He knows how to love. Because you taught him."

Pappa's eyes glistened. He nodded. Didn't speak. Didn't need to.

---

Keiran's Visit

They let Keiran in for a minute. Just a minute. He climbed onto the chair beside Jay. Looked at Keifer. At the tubes. The machines. The bandages.

"Kuya Kai looks tired."

Jay put her arm around him. "He is tired. He had a big surgery. He needs to rest."

Keiran nodded. "Rex can help. Rex is good at resting." He placed Rex carefully on the pillow beside Keifer's head. "Protect him, Rex. While he rests."

Jay's heart broke. Filled. Loved. "Rex is the best protector, Keiran. Kuya Kai is lucky to have him."

Keiran nodded. "I know. That's why I brought him."

---

Keigan's Visit

Keigan came in quietly. Stood beside the bed. Looked at his brother. His calm, serious face.

"Kuya Kai. I did research. Accident survival rates are high when patients are young and healthy. You're both. You'll be fine." He paused. "Also, I brought you a book. About volcanoes. For when you're bored. Which you will be. With the broken leg."

Jay laughed. Couldn't help it. "Thank you, Koya. He'll love it."

Keigan nodded. Placed the book on the nightstand. "I know. Volcanoes are the best."

---

The Night

Visitors left. One by one. Promising to return tomorrow.

Jay stayed. Curled in the chair beside Keifer's bed. Holding his hand. Watching him breathe.

The machines beeped softly. The city lights glowed outside. The room was quiet.

She thought about the morning. His arms around her. His voice. His smile. His promise to be home for dinner.

She thought about the call. The drive. The waiting. The terror.

She thought about the doctor's words. He's going to be okay. The most beautiful words she'd ever heard.

Keifer stirred. Squeezed her hand. Opened his eyes.

"Jay. You're still here."

She kissed his hand. "I told you. I'd be right here. When you woke up."

He smiled. Weak. Tired. "Always here."

She kissed his forehead. "Always. Now go back to sleep. I'll be here."

He closed his eyes. "Love you."

She watched him drift off. "Love you too, Keifer. Forever."

---

Morning

Sunlight streamed through the windows.

Jay woke in the chair. Neck stiff. Eyes gritty. Hand still holding his.

Keifer was awake. Watching her. Those storm-gray eyes soft in the morning light.

"Staring again?" she murmured.

He smiled. "Always. You're worth staring at."

She sat up. Stretched. Looked at him. At his pale face. His bandages. His broken leg. Alive. Awake. Here.

"How do you feel?" she asked.

He considered. "Like I was hit by a truck."

She laughed. Cried. "You were hit by a truck."

He shrugged. Winced. "Don't remember. Just remember thinking about you. About our forever. About all the things I hadn't done yet."

She took his hand. Held it against her heart. "You have time. All the time. Forever."

He squeezed her hand. "Forever. I like that."

She kissed his knuckles. "Forever, Mr. Watson. You promised."

He smiled. "I keep my promises, Mrs. Watson."

---

The Family Returns

The door opened. Mamma with coffee. Pappa with updates. Keiran with Rex. Keigan with another book. Percy with jokes. Aries with calm.

They filled the room. Love. Chaos. Family.

Keiran climbed onto the bed carefully. "Kuya Kai! You're awake! Rex protected you! He's the best!"

Keifer smiled. "He is, little monster. He's the best."

Keigan placed his new book on the nightstand. "This one is about volcano survival. For inspiration."

Percy leaned over. "You look terrible, man. Like you fought a truck and lost."

Aries pulled him back. "Percy. Not now."

Percy waved him off. "I'm being supportive! In my own way!"

Keifer laughed. Winced. "Don't make me laugh. Broken ribs."

Percy gasped. "I'm funny! My jokes are medically significant!"

Everyone laughed. Even Keifer. Even through the pain.

Jay watched them. Her family. Her chaos. Her love.

Keifer squeezed her hand. She looked at him. Those storm-gray eyes. Alive. Hers.

"I love you," she whispered.

He smiled. "I love you too. Forever."

---

The Promise

Later, when the room quieted, Jay sat beside him. Holding his hand. Watching the sunset through the window.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah, love?"

"No more accidents. No more almost losing you. I can't do it again."

He squeezed her hand. "No more accidents. I promise."

She looked at him. "You can't promise that. You can't control everything."

He smiled. "I can promise to be careful. To come home to you. To love you every day. That's enough."

She kissed his forehead. "That's everything."

He pulled her closer. "Forever, Mrs. Watson. Starting now. Continuing always."

She closed her eyes. His hand in hers. His heart beating. His breath warm on her skin.

"Forever, Mr. Watson. Forever."
