Chapter 40 - healing

Chapter 37: Healing

The First Morning

Jay woke in the chair beside Keifer's hospital bed.

Her neck was stiff. Her back ached. Her hand was still wrapped around his. She hadn't let go all night.

She opened her eyes. Found him watching her. Those storm-gray eyes soft in the morning light.

"Staring again?" she murmured.

He smiled. Weak. But real. "Always. You're worth staring at."

She sat up. Stretched. Looked at him. His leg was elevated. Bandages wrapped around his chest. Bruises blooming purple and yellow across his arms. Alive. Awake. Here.

"How do you feel?" she asked.

He considered. "Like I was hit by a truck."

She laughed. Cried. "You were hit by a truck."

He shrugged. Winced. "Don't remember. Just remember thinking about you. About coming home."

She took his hand. Held it against her heart. "You're home now. I'm here."

He squeezed her hand. "Always here."

She kissed his knuckles. "Always."

---

The Morning Routine

The nurses came. Checked vitals. Changed bandages. Adjusted the IV.

Jay watched everything. Asked questions. Took notes. Learned his medication schedule. His physical therapy plan. His recovery timeline.

When the nurse finished, Jay picked up the small cup of pills. "Time for medicine."

Keifer looked at the pills. "I can take those myself."

She raised an eyebrow. "You have a broken leg, three cracked ribs, and internal injuries that just got sewn back together. You're not taking anything yourself."

He opened his mouth to argue. She popped the pills in. Followed with water. Efficient. Unarguable.

He swallowed. Stared at her. "That was aggressive."

She kissed his forehead. "That was love. Now. Breakfast."

---

Breakfast

Mamma arrived with a tray. Real food. Home-cooked. Love in every container.

Jay took the tray. Set it up on the rolling table. Positioned it perfectly. Fluffed his pillows. Adjusted his bed.

Keifer watched her. "You're nesting."

She looked at him. "I'm taking care of my husband. There's a difference."

Mamma smiled. Kissed Keifer's cheek. "She's been like this since she woke up. Ordered me to bring your favorite foods. Made me promise to cook everything from scratch." She patted his hand. "You're in good hands, son."

She left. Closing the door quietly.

Jay sat beside him. Picked up the spoon. "Open."

Keifer stared at her. "I can feed myself."

"You have a broken leg and three cracked ribs. Moving hurts. Let me help."

He opened his mouth. She fed him soup. Watched him swallow. Fed him another spoonful.

"This is humiliating," he mumbled.

She smiled. "This is marriage. In sickness and in health. Remember?"

He looked at her. Those storm-gray eyes softening. "I remember."

She fed him another spoonful. "Then let me take care of you. You took care of me. Now it's my turn."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "You're enjoying this."

She grinned. "Maybe a little."

---

The Sponge Bath

The nurse explained the process. Bed bath only. No shower until the incisions healed. Keifer's face went pale. Not from pain. From embarrassment.

Jay sent the nurse away. "I've got this."

Keifer stared at her. "Jay. You don't have to—"

She filled a basin with warm water. Grabbed a soft cloth. Pulled the curtain around his bed. "I'm your wife. I've seen every part of you. This isn't new."

His face was red now. "It's different. This is... clinical."

She dipped the cloth in water. Squeezed it. "This is love. Close your eyes."

He closed his eyes.

She washed his face first. Gentle. Careful. Avoiding the bruises. Wiped his forehead. His cheeks. His jaw. He leaned into her touch. Just slightly.

"I used to dream about this," she whispered.

He opened his eyes. "Washing me with a sponge?"

She smiled. "Taking care of you. When I was in the hospital. When you were taking care of me. I used to dream about the day when I'd be strong enough to return the favor."

His eyes glistened. "Jay..."

She kissed his forehead. "Let me do this. Let me take care of you. Please."

He closed his eyes again. Nodded.

She washed his arms. His hands. His chest. Avoiding the bandages. Working around the bruises. Gentle. Loving. Thorough.

When she finished, she dried him with a soft towel. Helped him into a clean gown. Brushed his hair back from his face.

He opened his eyes. "I love you, Jay Watson."

She kissed his lips. Soft. Sweet. "I love you too, Keifer Watson. Now rest. I'll be right here."

---

The Visitors

Percy arrived first. Bouncing into the room. Too loud. Too energetic. Too Percy.

"KEIFER! MY MAN! YOU LOOK TERRIBLE!"

Aries followed. Grabbed Percy's collar. Pulled him back. "Volume, Perce. He has a head injury."

Percy lowered his voice to a stage whisper. "Sorry. KEIFER. MY MAN. YOU LOOK TERRIBLE."

Keifer laughed. Winced. "Don't make me laugh. Broken ribs."

Percy gasped. "My jokes are healing! Medically proven!"

Aries sighed. "Nothing about you is medically proven."

Keiran appeared. Climbed onto the bed carefully. Rex clutched in his hand. "Kuya Kai! I brought Rex! He missed you!"

Keifer smiled. "I missed Rex too."

Keiran placed the dinosaur on the pillow. "He'll stay with you. Protect you. I'll visit every day."

Keifer kissed his forehead. "Best protector. Best visitor."

Keigan stood by the bed. Book in hand. "I brought you more volcano books. For when you're bored. Which will be often." He paused. "Also, I did research on bone healing. You need calcium and vitamin D. I made a list."

He handed Keifer a neatly written page. Detailed. Organized. Thorough.

Keifer stared at it. "Thank you, Koya. This is... thorough."

Keigan nodded. "I'm thorough. It's genetic."

---

Mamma's Turn

Mamma arrived with lunch. Fresh food. Homemade. Smelling like heaven.

She took one look at the scene. Percy being too loud. Aries trying to control him. Keiran on the bed. Keigan reading. Jay hovering.

"Everyone out," she announced. "My son needs rest. And food. Not chaos."

Percy protested. "But Mamma—"

She pointed to the door. "Out. You can come back this afternoon. When he's had a nap."

Percy left. Aries followed. Keiran kissed Keifer's cheek. "I'll be back, Kuya Kai. Rex is here. He'll protect you."

Keigan nodded. "I'll return with more research."

Then it was just them. Mamma. Jay. Keifer.

Mamma set the tray on the table. Looked at her son. "You scared me, baby. Don't do it again."

Keifer smiled. "I'll try, Mamma."

She kissed his forehead. "Try harder." She turned to Jay. "Make sure he eats. All of it. He needs his strength."

Jay nodded. "Yes, Mamma."

Mamma left. Closing the door quietly.

Jay picked up the spoon. "Open."

Keifer opened his mouth. Let her feed him. Again. And again. And again.

---

The Afternoon Nap

After lunch, Keifer grew tired. His eyes heavy. His words slower.

Jay adjusted his pillows. Pulled the blanket up. Dimmed the lights.

"Sleep," she said. "I'll be here."

He grabbed her hand. "Stay."

She sat beside him. "I'm not going anywhere."

He closed his eyes. His grip loosened as sleep took him. She held on anyway.

She watched him breathe. The rise and fall of his chest. The bruises slowly fading. The healing beginning.

She thought about the hospital. Her hospital. When she was the one in the bed. When he was the one sitting beside her. Never leaving. Never giving up.

Now it was her turn.

She kissed his hand. Whispered, "I've got you, Keifer. I'm right here."

He smiled in his sleep. Squeezed her hand. Just once.

---

Physical Therapy

The physical therapist came in the late afternoon. A cheerful woman named Diane. Unfazed by Keifer's grumpy face.

"Mr. Watson! Time to move!"

Keifer stared at her. "I have a broken leg. I'm not moving."

Diane smiled. "Your leg is broken. Your arms aren't. We're going to sit up. We're going to stretch. We're going to keep your muscles from atrophying."

Jay stood. Moved to his side. "I'll help."

Diane looked at her. "You're the wife?"

Jay nodded. "I'm the wife."

Diane smiled. "Good. You're in charge. He'll listen to you."

Keifer looked between them. "I'm right here. I can hear you."

Jay ignored him. "What do we do first?"

---

The Sit-Up

Diane explained. Jay listened. Keifer grumbled.

Jay climbed onto the bed behind him. Braced her body against his back. "Okay. Lean on me."

Keifer hesitated. "Jay, I'm heavy. I'll hurt you."

She wrapped her arms around him. "You won't hurt me. I'm stronger than I look. Lean."

He leaned. Slowly. Carefully. His back against her chest. His head against her shoulder.

She held him. Steady. Strong. "See? I've got you."

Diane directed. "Good. Now, let's stretch those arms. Reach out. Slowly."

Keifer reached. Winced. His ribs protesting.

Jay held him tighter. "I've got you. I've got you."

He reached further. His arms extending. His muscles stretching. His wife holding him steady.

When he finished, he fell back against her. Breathing hard. Sweating. Alive.

She kissed his ear. "Good job, Mr. Watson."

He closed his eyes. "You're never letting me live this down, are you?"

She grinned. "Never."

---

The Bathroom

Diane left. The nurse explained the next challenge. The bathroom. Keifer's face went pale again.

Jay sent the nurse away. "I've got this."

Keifer grabbed her arm. "Jay. You can't carry me. I'm too heavy."

She knelt beside the bed. Met his eyes. "I carried you through cancer. Through chemo. Through the darkest days of our lives. I can carry you to the bathroom."

He stared at her. "That's not the same."

She smiled. "It's exactly the same. Now. Let's do this together."

She helped him stand. One arm around his waist. His arm around her shoulders. Slow. Careful. Step by step.

He leaned on her. More than he wanted to. Less than she could handle.

She held him steady. "See? I've got you."

They made it to the bathroom. Made it back. Each step a victory.

When he was back in bed, he pulled her close. "I love you, Jay Watson."

She kissed his forehead. "I love you too, Keifer Watson. Now rest. You've done enough for today."

---

Evening

Mamma brought dinner. Aries and Percy came back. Keiran and Keigan too. The room filled again. Love and chaos and family.

Keiran sat on the bed. Showed Keifer his new dinosaur drawings. Explained each one in detail.

Keigan read volcano facts. Loud enough for everyone. Important enough to be heard.

Percy told jokes. Bad ones. Made everyone groan. Made Keifer laugh. Made him wince. Made him laugh again.

Aries kept the peace. Refilled water. Adjusted pillows. Loved quietly.

Mamma watched her family. Her boys. Her daughter. Her heart.

Pappa stood in the doorway. Watching. Smiling behind his newspaper.

And Jay. Jay sat beside Keifer. Holding his hand. Feeding him dinner. Adjusting his blankets. Loving him through it all.

---

The Night

Visitors left. The room quieted. Just them. Just the machines. Just the city lights through the window.

Jay settled into the chair beside his bed. Her hand in his. Her eyes on his face.

He squeezed her hand. "You should go home. Sleep in a real bed."

She shook her head. "I'm not leaving you."

"Jay—"

She leaned close. Kissed his forehead. "You didn't leave me. Not once. Not through the chemo. Not through the dark days. Not when I was dying. I'm not leaving you."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "The chair is uncomfortable."

She smiled. "I don't care."

He pulled her hand to his chest. "I love you."

She kissed his knuckles. "I love you too. Now sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."

He closed his eyes. "Always here."

She watched him drift off. His breathing slowing. His grip loosening. His body finally resting.

She stayed. Holding his hand. Watching him heal.

It was her turn now. Her turn to be strong. Her turn to be the rock. Her turn to carry him when he couldn't carry himself.

She was ready.

---

The Promise

In the darkness, she whispered.

"I've got you, Keifer. I've got you. You carried me through the fire. Now I'll carry you through this. We're going to get through this. Together. Like we always do. Because we're us. Because we're forever."

He stirred. Squeezed her hand. "Forever, Mrs. Watson."

She smiled. Watched the moonlight paint his face. Watched his chest rise and fall. Watched him heal.

Forever, Mr. Watson. Forever.
