Chapter 39: The Breaking Point
One Month Later
Keifer was healing.
The casts were off. The bruises had faded. The physical therapy was working. He could walk now, though with a slight limp that would take time to fully disappear. He was back at work part-time. Back to being himself.
But something was different.
The accident had changed something in him. Made him sharper. Quicker to anger. Quicker to fear. Quicker to assume the worst.
Jay noticed. Everyone noticed. But no one knew how to fix it.
---
The Afternoon
Jay was in the garden with Mamma. It was their ritual now. Tea at three. Just the two of them. Talking. Laughing. Being mother and daughter.
The afternoon sun was warm. The flowers were blooming. Keiran was somewhere inside, probably drawing dinosaurs. Keigan was reading in the library. Percy and Aries were at work. Pappa was in his study.
It was peaceful. Quiet. Perfect.
Mamma poured the tea. "He's getting better, darling. You can see it. The limp is almost gone. His strength is returning."
Jay nodded. "He's healing. Physically. But something else is wrong. He's been... different. Quicker to anger. Shorter with everyone."
Mamma's face softened. "He almost died, Jay. That changes a person. He's scared. He's been scared since the accident. He just doesn't know how to show it."
Jay stirred her tea. "I know. I understand. But he won't talk to me. Every time I try, he changes the subject. Or he gets angry. Or he just..." She trailed off.
"Shuts down?"
Jay nodded. "Like he's building walls. Like he's pushing me away."
Mamma took her hand. "He's not pushing you away, darling. He's protecting himself. He's been hurt. He's scared of being hurt again. Give him time. He'll come back to you."
Jay looked toward the house. Keifer was inside. Working from home today. In his study. Probably buried in paperwork. Probably brooding.
"I hope so, Mamma. I really hope so."
---
The Conversation
They talked for another hour. About Keiran's latest dinosaur obsession. About Keigan's science fair project. About Percy's latest disaster. About Aries's quiet strength.
Jay laughed. Forgot her worries. Just for a moment.
Then Mamma's phone buzzed. She glanced at it. Smiled. "It's Keifer. He's probably wondering where you are."
Jay smiled. "He knows where I am. He always knows."
Mamma typed a quick response. Put her phone down. "He says he's coming out to join us. He needs a break from work."
Jay's heart lifted. Maybe. Maybe today. Maybe he'd talk.
---
Keifer Appears
He walked into the garden. Limping slightly. His face tired. But his eyes searching. Finding her. Always finding her.
Jay smiled. "Hey, Mr. Watson. Taking a break?"
He didn't smile back. His eyes moved from her to Mamma. To the tea. To the phone in Jay's hand.
"What are you doing?" His voice was flat. Controlled.
She frowned. "Having tea with Mamma. You knew that."
He walked closer. His limp more pronounced today. He'd overdone it at physical therapy. She'd told him to rest. He never listened.
"I saw you on your phone. Who were you talking to?"
Her heart started beating faster. Something was wrong. His face was too tight. His voice was too controlled.
"I wasn't talking to anyone. Mamma texted you. That's all."
He reached her chair. Looked down at her. Those storm-gray eyes were dark. "Don't lie to me, Jay."
Mamma stood. "Keifer, what's wrong? What happened?"
He ignored her. Kept his eyes on Jay. "I saw you. From my window. You were on your phone. You were laughing. Who were you talking to?"
Jay stood. Her legs shaking. "Keifer, I wasn't talking to anyone. I was laughing at something Mamma said. That's all."
He pulled out his phone. Unlocked it. Turned the screen toward her.
It was Instagram. A post from Ethan. A photo of the Q3 numbers. A caption: Thanks to Jay Watson for saving my afternoon. This woman is a goddess. A crown sticker over the photo.
Jay stared at it. "Keifer, I didn't— I didn't see that. I didn't know he posted that."
He stepped closer. His voice rising. "He called you. I saw it. On your phone. It buzzed. I saw his name. You were laughing with him. On the phone. While you were supposed to be with my mother."
She shook her head. "No. No, Keifer. He called about work. The Henderson file. He needed the Q3 numbers. That's all. I sent them. I didn't even see the post."
"You answered his call. On your day off. You laughed with him. I heard you laughing."
Mamma moved between them. "Keifer, stop. You're scaring her."
He moved around Mamma. His eyes fixed on Jay. "Why did you answer? Why did you laugh? Why did you—"
"Because I was being polite!" Jay's voice cracked. "He's a colleague! I was doing my job! I was helping someone with work! That's all it was!"
He grabbed her wrist. Not hard. But firm. "Then why did he put a crown on you? Why did he call you a goddess? Why is he posting about my wife like you belong to him?"
She tried to pull back. "Keifer, you're hurting me."
He let go immediately. Stepped back. His hands shaking. His face pale. "I'm sorry. I didn't— I didn't mean to—"
She stepped away. Her wrist red where he'd held her. Her heart pounding. "You need to calm down. You need to—"
"I saw you talking to him. At the office. He was standing too close. He was touching your arm. You didn't stop him."
She stared at him. "I stepped back. I moved away. You saw that."
"I saw you smiling. I saw you laughing. I saw you—"
"I was being polite, Keifer! He's a colleague! I was doing my job!"
"Your job is to be my assistant! Not his! Not anyone else's! MINE!"
The words echoed across the garden.
Mamma grabbed his arm. "Keifer Watson! Stop this right now!"
Keiran appeared in the doorway. Rex in his hand. His face scared. Keigan behind him. Percy and Aries had come home early. They stood in the doorway. Watching. Everyone was watching.
Jay stood frozen. Her husband had just screamed at her. In front of her family. In front of his family. In front of everyone.
She couldn't breathe.
"Jay." Keifer's voice was softer now. Realization dawning. "Jay, I didn't mean—"
She stepped back. Away from him. Away from his voice. Away from his anger.
"Don't." Her voice was barely a whisper. "Don't come near me."
He reached for her. "Jay, please—"
She stepped back again. "Don't touch me."
Her back hit the garden wall. She couldn't go further. Couldn't escape. He was still coming toward her. Still reaching.
Keiran started crying. "Kuya Kai, you're scaring her!"
Percy moved forward. "Keifer, stop. Just stop."
But Keifer didn't stop. He couldn't stop. His eyes were wild. His hands were shaking. He was terrified. And he was terrifying.
"Jay, please. Let me explain. Let me—"
She pushed past him. Ran. Through the garden. Through the kitchen. Through the living room. Up the stairs. Her legs burning. Her lungs burning. Her heart breaking.
---
The Room
She reached their room. Their room. The room where they'd loved each other. Laughed together. Built their forever.
She ran inside. Closed the door. Locked it. Her hands were shaking so hard she could barely turn the lock.
She backed away. Stared at the door. Waiting. For him. For her. For something.
Then she heard him. His footsteps on the stairs. His voice calling her name.
"Jay! Jay, open the door!"
She pressed her back against the wall. Pulled her knees to her chest. Made herself small. Smaller. Invisible.
"Jay, please. Please open the door. I need to see you. I need to explain."
She didn't answer. Couldn't answer. Her voice was gone. Her breath was gone. Everything was gone.
He banged on the door. "Jay! Please! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
She heard Mamma's voice. "Keifer, leave her alone. You've done enough."
"I need to see her! I need to—"
"She's scared, Keifer. You scared her. You grabbed her wrist. You screamed at her. In front of everyone."
His voice broke. "I didn't mean to. I didn't—"
"You did. Now go. Give her space. Let her breathe."
---
The Silence
She heard his footsteps retreat. Heard Mamma's softer footsteps approach the door.
"Jay? Baby? It's me. It's Mamma. He's gone. He's in his study. Can you open the door?"
Jay pressed her face into her knees. Didn't answer.
"Jay, I know you're scared. I know you're hurting. But locking yourself in there isn't going to help. Let me in. Let me sit with you. Please."
She shook her head. Even though Mamma couldn't see.
"Okay, baby. Okay. I'll be right outside. When you're ready. I'm here."
---
The Darkness
Jay sat on the floor as the sun set. The room grew dark. She didn't turn on the lights. Didn't move. Didn't think.
She replayed the scene. His voice. His anger. His hand on her wrist.
Don't lie to me.
I saw you.
I trusted you.
MINE.
She looked at her wrist. The red mark was fading. But she could still feel it. His grip. His fear. His love twisted into something dark.
She pressed her hand against her chest. Her heart was still beating. Still hurting. Still hoping.
But she didn't know what she was hoping for.
---
The Voices
Hours passed. She heard footsteps in the hallway. Mamma's voice. Pappa's voice. Percy. Aries. Even Keigan.
"He's been in his study all night. Hasn't eaten. Hasn't slept."
"Let him stew. He deserves it."
"Percy, not now."
"She's his wife. He scared her. He hurt her."
"I know. I know. But he's hurting too."
"He doesn't get to hurt her because he's hurting."
The voices faded. The house grew quiet.
Then she heard him. Walking past her door. Stopping. His hand on the wood. His breath catching.
"Jay." His voice was broken. "Jay, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I didn't mean to hurt you. I love you. I love you so much. Please. Please forgive me."
She pressed her hand against her mouth. Didn't let the sound escape.
"I know you can hear me. I know you're in there. And I know I don't deserve you to open this door. But please. Please just know. I love you. I love you. I love you."
His hand slid off the door. His footsteps retreated. The study door closed.
She was alone.
---
The Morning
Sunlight crept through the curtains. Jay opened her eyes. She was still on the floor. Still in her clothes from yesterday. Still alone.
She sat up slowly. Her body ached. Her head pounded. Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She looked at her wrist. The red mark was gone. But the memory remained.
She looked at the door. Still locked. Still closed. Still between them.
---
The Knocking
Soft knocking. Not Keifer. Lighter. Gentler.
Mamma's voice. "Jay? It's me. Can I come in?"
She stood. Walked to the door. Unlocked it. Opened it.
Mamma stood there. Her face worried. Her eyes soft. She looked at Jay. At her swollen eyes. Her messy hair. Her empty hands.
"Oh, baby."
She pulled Jay into her arms. Held her tight. Rocked her gently.
"I've got you," she whispered. "I've got you."
Jay cried. Quietly. Into Mamma's shoulder. All the fear. All the hurt. All the confusion.
"He grabbed me," she whispered. "He grabbed my wrist. He screamed at me. He didn't believe me."
Mamma held her tighter. "I know, baby. I know."
"I didn't do anything wrong. I just sent a file for work. That's all. I didn't even see the post. I didn't know."
Mamma pulled back. Looked at her. "I know, darling. I know you didn't. We all know."
Jay wiped her eyes. "Then why doesn't he?"
Mamma's face softened. "He does, baby. He does. He's just scared. He almost died. And now he's terrified of losing you. He doesn't know how to handle it. He doesn't know how to be scared without being angry."
Jay shook her head. "He can't treat me like this. He can't grab me. He can't scream at me. He can't—"
She stopped. Cried again.
Mamma held her. "I know. I know. He was wrong. He knows he was wrong. He's been sitting in his study all night. Didn't sleep. Didn't eat. Just sat there. Waiting for you."
Jay closed her eyes. "I don't know what to do."
Mamma pulled back. Looked at her. "When you're ready, talk to him. He's your husband. You love him. He loves you. This can be fixed. But only if you talk."
---
The Study
Jay stood outside his study. Her hand on the door. Her heart pounding.
She could hear him inside. His footsteps pacing. His breath catching. His voice muttering.
She knocked. Soft. Once. Twice.
The pacing stopped. The door opened.
Keifer stood there. His face was pale. His eyes red. His clothes rumpled. He looked like he hadn't slept. He looked like he'd been crying.
He looked at her. At her swollen eyes. Her messy hair. Her trembling hands.
"Jay." His voice cracked. Broke. "Jay, I'm so sorry."
He reached for her. She stepped back. Just slightly. Just enough.
His hand dropped. His face crumbled. "Please. Please let me explain. Please let me—"
She walked past him. Into the study. Sat on the couch. Pulled her knees up. Made herself small.
He stood in the doorway. Watching her. Waiting. "Can I sit?"
She nodded.
He sat across from her. His hands clasped. His eyes on her face. "I was wrong. Everything I said was wrong. Everything I did was wrong."
She didn't speak.
He leaned forward. "When I saw that post... when I saw him calling you... I just... I lost it. I saw him touching your arm. I saw him standing too close. I saw him looking at you like... like..."
He stopped. Swallowed. "And I thought about the accident. I thought about almost losing you. About almost never seeing you again. And I just... I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. I just saw him. And I saw you. And I—"
He broke. His face crumpled. Tears streaming. "I'm so sorry, Jay. I'm so sorry."
She watched him. Her husband. Her love. Broken and scared and sorry.
"You grabbed my wrist," she said quietly. "You screamed at me. In front of everyone. You accused me. You didn't believe me."
He bowed his head. "I know."
"I was scared. I was so scared. You were so angry. I didn't know what you'd do. I didn't know what you thought. I didn't know anything."
He looked up. His eyes wet. "I would never hurt you, Jay. Never."
She shook her head. "You did. You hurt me. You hurt me more than any truck. Any accident. Any cancer. You hurt me."
He broke. His body shaking. His tears falling. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I don't know what's wrong with me. I don't know why I'm like this. I don't know how to stop it."
She watched him. Her husband. Her love. Broken and scared and sorry.
She reached out. Took his hand. "I know what's wrong with you, Keifer."
He looked at her. "What?"
She held his hand tighter. "You're scared. You almost died. And now you're terrified of losing me. Of losing what we have. So you push me away before I can leave. You accuse me before I can betray you. You hurt me before I can hurt you."
He stared at her. "That's not— I didn't—"
She squeezed his hand. "It's okay. I understand. I did the same thing. When I was sick. I pushed you away. I didn't tell you about the cancer. I tried to protect you. To protect myself."
He shook his head. "That's not the same. I grabbed you. I screamed at you. I was—"
"You were scared, Keifer. That's all. Just scared."
She pulled him closer. He came. Collapsed into her arms. Held her like she was the only thing keeping him alive.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry. I love you. I love you so much. Please forgive me."
She held him. Rocked him. Let him cry. "I forgive you. I forgive you, Keifer. But we need to talk. Really talk. About the accident. About the fear. About all of it."
He pulled back. Looked at her. "I know. I know we do. I've been... I've been seeing someone. A therapist. Since the accident. I didn't tell you because I was ashamed. Because I thought—"
She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. "You don't have to be ashamed, Keifer. You don't have to hide from me. We're a team. Remember? Together."
He held her face in his hands. "Together. Always together."
She smiled. Small. But real. "Always together. Now. Let's go downstairs. Your mother has been holding breakfast for two hours. And Keiran thinks you're a sad dinosaur who lost his family."
He laughed. Cried. Held her close. "I love you, Jay Watson."
She kissed him again. "I love you too, Keifer Watson. Now let's go fix this. Together."
