Chapter 42: The Healing
One Week Later
Jay stood in the doorway of their old apartment, looking at the empty rooms one last time.
The walls were bare. The floors were swept. The ghosts of their past were finally quiet. She'd spent seven days here. Seven days of thinking. Seven days of crying. Seven days of remembering who she was before she was Mrs. Watson.
Percy stood behind her. His hand on her shoulder. "You ready?"
She looked at the key in her hand. The one Keifer had given her. The one to their home. Their room. Their life.
"I think so," she whispered.
Aries appeared on her other side. "He's been waiting. Every day. Outside. Just sitting in his car. Watching the building. Not bothering you. Just… waiting."
She nodded. She knew. She'd seen him every morning when she looked out the window. His car parked across the street. His face turned toward her window. His hands gripping the steering wheel. Waiting.
"Let's go home," she said.
---
The Drive
Percy drove. Aries in the passenger seat. Jay in the back, looking out the window at the city passing by. The streets she'd walked as a girl. The buildings she'd worked in. The life she'd built from nothing.
She thought about the first time she'd seen the mansion. How terrified she'd been. How small she'd felt. How she'd never believed she belonged there.
She thought about Keifer. His storm-gray eyes. His quiet strength. His fierce love.
She thought about the messages. The panic attack. The hospital. The empty apartment.
She thought about the key in her hand. The promise it held.
"He's going to be there when we get back," Percy said. "He's been there every day. Waiting."
She nodded. "I know."
Aries turned in his seat. "Are you ready to see him? Really ready?"
She looked at the key. At her reflection in the window. At the woman she'd become.
"I'm ready."
---
The Mansion
The car pulled through the gates. The mansion rose before her. Beautiful. Imposing. Home.
Keifer was standing on the front steps. His hands in his pockets. His face pale. His eyes searching the car. Finding her. Holding her.
Percy parked. Jay sat for a moment. Looking at her husband. Her love. Her home.
Keifer didn't move. Didn't rush to the car. Didn't push. He waited. Like he'd waited every day for a week. Patient. Hoping. Loving.
She opened the door. Stepped out. Walked toward him.
He watched her come. Those storm-gray eyes wet. His hands shaking. His breath catching.
She stopped in front of him. Looked up at his face. At the fear. The hope. The love.
"Hi," she whispered.
He swallowed. "Hi."
She held up the key. "I came home."
His face crumpled. He reached for her. Stopped. "Can I— can I hold you? Please?"
She stepped into his arms. Let him hold her. Let him cry. Let him shake.
"I'm sorry," he whispered into her hair. "I'm so sorry. I love you. I love you so much."
She held him back. "I know. I love you too."
---
The Garden
They walked to the garden together. Hand in hand. The flowers were blooming. The fountain was flowing. The bench where he'd proposed was waiting.
They sat. Her hand in his. Her head on his shoulder. His heart beating under her ear.
"I thought I lost you," he whispered. "When I saw you on that floor… when they took you to the hospital… when you wouldn't see me… I thought I lost you forever."
She squeezed his hand. "I was scared. I was hurt. But I never stopped loving you. Not for one second."
He kissed her hair. "I know. I know. I've been seeing Dr. Reyes. Every day. Talking about the accident. About the fear. About why I pushed you away."
She looked up at him. "What did you learn?"
He was quiet for a moment. "I learned that I was scared. Terrified. I almost died, and all I could think about was losing you. So I started pushing. Testing. Seeing if you'd leave before I could lose you." He swallowed. "It was stupid. It was cruel. It was— I was—"
She touched his face. "You were human, Keifer. You made mistakes. We both did."
He leaned into her hand. "I'm going to be better. I'm going to talk to you. Tell you when I'm scared. Tell you when I'm hurting. No more walls. No more pushing. Just us. Together."
She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Healing. "That's all I ever wanted, Keifer. Just you. Just us."
---
The Family
They walked back to the house hand in hand. The door opened before they reached it.
Keiran burst out. Rex in his hand. "KUYA JAY! YOU'RE HOME! YOU'RE HOME! I MISSED YOU!"
He launched himself at her. She caught him. Held him tight.
"I missed you too, little monster."
He pulled back. Looked at her face. "Are you better now? Are you staying? Forever?"
She kissed his forehead. "I'm better now. And I'm staying. Forever."
He beamed. "BEST DAY EVER!"
Keigan appeared in the doorway. His book in his hand. His face serious. "You're back."
She smiled. "I'm back, Koya."
He nodded. "Good. The house was too quiet without you."
She pulled him into a hug. He let her. Hugged her back. Just for a moment.
Mamma appeared behind them. Tears in her eyes. "My daughter. My beautiful daughter. Welcome home."
Jay moved into her arms. Let Mamma hold her. Let the love wash over her.
"I'm home, Mamma. I'm home."
---
The Apology
Percy and Aries stood in the doorway. Watching their sister. Their family. Their home.
Percy caught Keifer's eye. "You hurt her."
Keifer nodded. "I know."
Percy stepped closer. "If you ever do it again—"
"I won't." Keifer's voice was steady. "I'm going to spend the rest of my life making sure she knows she's loved. She's safe. She's home."
Aries moved to stand beside his brother. "She loves you. That's the only reason you're still standing."
Keifer nodded. "I know. I don't deserve her. But I'm going to spend every day trying to."
Percy studied his face. His best friend. His brother. "You hurt her. But you're also the reason she's alive. You sat by her hospital bed. You never left. You loved her when she couldn't love herself." He paused. "We're watching. Both of us. Always."
Keifer met his eyes. "I know. I wouldn't have it any other way."
---
The Night
They sat in their room. Their room. The shells from the Maldives on her nightstand. The messages in bottles beside them. Keiran's dinosaur drawing on the wall.
Keifer held her hand. "I was so scared. When you didn't come back. When you didn't answer my calls. When you wouldn't see me."
She leaned against him. "I know. I needed time. To think. To feel. To remember who I am."
He kissed her hair. "And who are you?"
She looked up at him. Those storm-gray eyes soft. Loving. Hers.
"I'm Jay. I'm your wife. I'm a survivor. I'm someone who loves you. Even when it's hard. Even when it hurts. Even when we're both scared."
He pulled her closer. "I love you, Jay Watson. I'm going to spend the rest of my life proving it."
She smiled. Kissed him. "I know you will. That's why I came home."
---
The Promise
They lay in bed together. The moonlight streaming through the windows. The shells glinting. The dinosaurs watching.
Jay traced patterns on his chest. "Keifer?"
"Yeah, love?"
"No more secrets. No more walls. If you're scared, tell me. If you're hurting, tell me. We're a team. Remember? Together."
He held her tighter. "Together. Always. I promise."
She looked up at him. "I promise too. No more running. No more hiding. Just us. Just this."
He kissed her forehead. "Just us. Just forever."
She closed her eyes. Let sleep pull her under. Safe in his arms. Home in his heart.
---
The Morning
Jay woke to sunlight and the sound of Keifer's heartbeat under her ear.
He was awake. Watching her. Those storm-gray eyes soft.
"Staring again?" she murmured.
He smiled. "Always. You're worth staring at."
She stretched. Pressed closer. "I missed this. Waking up with you."
He kissed her hair. "I missed waking up with you. I missed everything with you."
She looked up at him. "We're going to be okay, aren't we?"
He cupped her face. "We're going to be more than okay. We're going to be us. Stronger. Better. Together."
She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Full of promise.
"Together, Mr. Watson."
He kissed her back. "Together, Mrs. Watson."
---
The New Beginning
They walked downstairs hand in hand. The kitchen was chaos. Normal chaos. Beautiful chaos.
Keiran was at the table, cereal everywhere, Rex supervising. Keigan was reading, occasionally looking up to correct facts. Percy was stealing bacon from Aries's plate. Aries was threatening him with a fork. Mamma was refereeing. Pappa was behind his newspaper.
Everyone looked up when they entered.
Keiran waved his spoon. "KUYA JAY! KUYA KAI! YOU'RE BOTH HERE! TOGETHER! THIS IS THE BEST DAY!"
Jay smiled. Ruffled his hair. "Every day is the best day, Keiran."
He nodded seriously. "I know. But today is EXTRA best."
Mamma stood. Crossed to Jay. Took her face in her hands. "My daughter. Home. Whole. Happy."
Jay hugged her. "I'm home, Mamma. I'm home."
Pappa lowered his newspaper. Looked at them over his glasses. "Good to have you back, Jay. The house was too quiet."
Percy snorted. "Too quiet? Keiran never shuts up."
Keiran gasped. "I'm EXCITING! There's a difference!"
Keigan looked up. "There is a difference. Keiran is neither."
Keiran threw a piece of toast at him. Keigan caught it without looking. Ate it. Never broke eye contact with his book.
Percy howled. Aries hid his smile. Mamma shook her head. Pappa chuckled behind his paper.
Jay leaned against Keifer. Watched her family. Her chaos. Her home.
"I missed this," she whispered.
He kissed her hair. "It missed you. We all missed you."
She looked up at him. "I'm not going anywhere, Keifer. Not ever."
He held her close. "Good. Because I'm not letting you go."
