Chapter 43 - breaking

Chapter 40: The Breaking

The Morning After

Jay woke alone.

The bed was cold beside her. Keifer's pillow still held his scent, but he was gone. She remembered him leaving early. Something about a meeting. Something about catching up on work.

She lay still for a moment. Her body ached. Her stomach cramped. Her head throbbed.

She looked at the calendar on her phone. Her period was due. That explained the cramps. The fatigue. The emotional rawness.

She closed her eyes. Let herself rest.

---

The Cramps

An hour later, the pain was worse.

She curled around a heating pad. Drank ginger tea. Took ibuprofen. Nothing helped. Her body was punishing her. Her mind was punishing her more.

She kept replaying yesterday. His hand on her wrist. His voice in her ear. His fear twisting into anger. His love twisting into something dark.

She looked at her wrist. The red mark was gone. But she could still feel it. Still hear him.

Your job is to be my assistant. Not his. Not anyone else's. MINE.

She pressed her face into the pillow. Cried quietly. Let the tears come. Let the pain wash over her.

---

The Phone

Her phone buzzed. She ignored it. Buzzed again. She reached for it. Maybe Keifer. Maybe he was coming home.

But it wasn't Keifer.

A notification. Instagram. She almost ignored it. But the name caught her eye. A woman's name. She didn't recognize it.

She opened it. Her hands shaking. Her heart pounding.

A message. From a woman named Vanessa. A model. Beautiful. Blonde. Everything Jay wasn't right now.

Can we go on a date, Mr. Watson? I've been waiting for you to call.

Jay stared at the screen. Her vision blurred. Her breath caught.

She scrolled up. There were more messages. Older ones. Going back weeks. Months.

Miss you, Keifer. When can I see you?

That accident scared me. I was so worried about you.

Your wife is lucky. But she doesn't know you like I do.

---

The Screenshot

Jay scrolled through the messages. Her hands numb. Her heart frozen.

She saw the timestamps. During her cancer treatment. During her hospital stays. During the nights Keifer said he was working late. During the days he said he had meetings.

She saw the photos. Vanessa at a restaurant. Vanessa at a hotel. Vanessa in a dress that left nothing to the imagination.

She saw the responses. Keifer's responses. Short. But there. Soon. Not now. She's sick. I can't leave her.

She's sick. I can't leave her.

Jay dropped the phone. It clattered on the floor. The screen went dark.

She couldn't breathe. Her chest was tight. Her vision was swimming. Her hands were shaking. Her body was shaking. Everything was shaking.

She slid off the bed. Sat on the floor. Pulled her knees to her chest. Made herself small.

She's sick. I can't leave her.

Not because he didn't want to. Not because he loved her. Because she was sick. Because she was dying. Because she was a burden he couldn't abandon.

The room was spinning. Her heart was racing. Her breath was coming in gasps.

She pressed her hand against her chest. Tried to slow her breathing. Tried to calm her heart. Tried to stop the world from spinning.

But the world kept spinning. And the darkness was coming. And she couldn't stop it.

---

The Collapse

She didn't remember falling.

One moment she was on the floor, gasping for breath. The next, she was lying on her side, her cheek against the cold wood, her eyes staring at nothing.

Her phone was beside her. The screen was cracked. Vanessa's face was still there. Smiling. Waiting. Wanting her husband.

Can we go on a date, Mr. Watson?

She closed her eyes. Let the darkness take her.

---

The Hours

Time passed. She didn't know how much. The sun moved across the room. The shadows lengthened. The cramps faded. The fear didn't.

She lay on the floor. Her body heavy. Her mind blank. Her heart numb.

She thought about the messages. The photos. The words.

She's sick. I can't leave her.

He stayed because she was sick. Because she was dying. Because leaving would make him the villain.

But now she wasn't sick. Now she wasn't dying. Now she was healthy and whole and here.

And he was still talking to her. Still planning to see her. Still—

She closed her eyes. Let the tears come. Let the pain wash over her.

---

The Door

She heard the front door open. Heard footsteps in the hallway. Heard his voice.

"Jay? I'm home. I brought lunch. Mamma sent food."

She didn't answer. Couldn't answer. Her voice was gone. Her breath was gone. Everything was gone.

"Jay? Where are you?"

His footsteps on the stairs. Her heart racing. Her hands shaking.

"Jay? Are you in the bedroom?"

He reached the door. Pushed it open.

---

The Sight

Keifer stopped in the doorway. His face went white. His hands dropped the food. It crashed on the floor.

Jay was on the floor. Curled on her side. Her face pale. Her lips blue. Her phone beside her. The screen cracked. Vanessa's face still visible.

"JAY!"

He crossed the room in seconds. Fell to his knees beside her. Gathered her in his arms. Her body was cold. Her breathing was shallow. Her pulse was weak.

"No. No, no, no, no, no."

He pressed his hand to her face. Her cheek was cold. Her lips were blue. Her eyes were closed.

"Jay! Jay, wake up! Please wake up!"

He grabbed his phone. Dialed. "I need an ambulance! My wife— she's unconscious— she's not breathing right— please— please hurry!"

---

The Wait

He held her while they waited. Rocked her. Talked to her. Begged her.

"Jay, please. Please wake up. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Whatever I did, I'm sorry. Please. Please don't leave me."

He saw her phone. The screen cracked. Vanessa's face still there. The messages. The photos. The words.

He picked it up. Read the messages. His face went pale. His hands shook. His heart stopped.

"Jay. Jay, I didn't— I never— This isn't—"

But she couldn't hear him. She was gone. In the darkness. Where he couldn't reach her.

---

The Ambulance

The paramedics arrived. Took her from his arms. Laid her on a stretcher. Checked her vitals. Her breathing. Her heart.

"She's in shock. Possible panic attack. We need to get her to the hospital."

Keifer followed. His legs shaking. His heart pounding. His mind racing.

"I'm coming with her. I'm her husband."

The paramedic nodded. "You can ride in the front."

He climbed into the ambulance. Watched them work on her. Watched them put oxygen on her face. Watched them check her pulse. Watched them try to bring her back.

He held her hand. "I'm here, Jay. I'm here. Please wake up. Please."

She didn't move. Didn't respond. Didn't breathe on her own.

---

The Hospital

The emergency room was chaos. Bright lights. Sterile smells. Hurrying feet.

They took her from him. Wheeled her through double doors. Left him in the waiting room.

He stood there. Alone. Terrified. Broken.

Mamma arrived first. Pappa behind her. Percy. Aries. Keigan. Keiran in Pappa's arms.

"What happened?" Mamma grabbed his arm. "Keifer, what happened?"

He couldn't speak. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't think.

Percy stepped forward. "Keifer. What happened to Jay?"

He held up her phone. The screen cracked. Vanessa's messages still visible.

Mamma took it. Read it. Her face went white. "Keifer. Who is this woman?"

He shook his head. "No one. She's no one. I never— I didn't—"

"Then why is she sending you messages? Why is she asking you on dates? Why is she—"

"I DON'T KNOW!"

He broke. His legs gave out. He fell to his knees. His body shaking. His tears falling.

"She's no one. She was before. Before Jay. Before everything. I never responded. I never encouraged her. I never—"

Mamma knelt beside him. "Then why didn't you block her? Why didn't you tell Jay? Why did you let her see this?"

He looked up. His face broken. "I don't know. I don't know. I was stupid. I was careless. I never thought— I never imagined—"

He couldn't finish. Couldn't explain. Couldn't undo what he'd done.

---

The Waiting

Hours passed. Or minutes. Keifer didn't know.

He sat in the waiting room. Her phone in his hands. The cracked screen still showing Vanessa's face. The messages still visible. The proof of his stupidity. His carelessness. His betrayal.

Mamma sat beside him. Her hand on his arm. "Who is she, Keifer? Tell me the truth."

He stared at the screen. "Someone I knew. Before Jay. Before everything. She was... persistent. Even after I told her I was married. Even after I stopped responding. She kept messaging."

"And you didn't block her?"

He shook his head. "I didn't think— I didn't— It seemed harmless. She was just messaging. I never responded. I never encouraged her. I never—"

"But you didn't stop her. You didn't protect Jay from seeing this."

He closed his eyes. "I know. I know. I was stupid. I was careless. I never thought she'd see it. I never thought—"

"You never thought about how it would feel for your wife to see another woman asking her husband on a date?"

He bowed his head. "No. I didn't. I was selfish. I was thoughtless. I was—"

He stopped. The words wouldn't come. The excuses wouldn't come. There was no excuse. He'd hurt her. Again. And again. And again.

---

The Doctor

Finally, the doctor appeared. A woman in scrubs. Face tired but calm.

"Family of Jay Watson?"

Keifer stood. "I'm her husband. How is she? Can I see her?"

The doctor nodded. "She's stable. It was a severe panic attack. Combined with low blood pressure from her menstrual cycle. Her body shut down. Protected itself."

Keifer's legs shook. "Is she awake? Can I see her?"

"She's awake. But she's very weak. And she's very... distressed. She asked not to see you."

The words hit him like a physical blow. "What?"

"She asked not to see you. She was very clear. She said she needs time. She said she needs space."

Keifer stepped back. His hand finding the wall. His legs giving out.

Mamma caught him. "It's okay, baby. She just needs time. She just needs—"

He shook his head. "She doesn't want to see me. She doesn't want—"

He couldn't finish. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't think.

Percy stepped forward. "Let me see her. Let me talk to her."

The doctor nodded. "She asked for her brothers. You can go in."

---

The Room

Percy walked into the room. Aries behind him.

Jay was in the bed. Pale. Small. Her eyes red. Her face swollen. Her hands clutching the blanket.

She looked up when they entered. Her eyes finding them. Her face crumbling.

"Percy. Ari."

Percy crossed to her. Took her hand. "We're here, Jay. We're here."

She cried. Silent tears. Her body shaking. Her heart breaking.

"I saw it," she whispered. "The messages. The photos. All of it."

Percy squeezed her hand. "I know. I know."

"He stayed because I was sick. Because I was dying. Because leaving would make him the villain."

Aries sat on the other side. "Jay, you don't know that. You don't know—"

She shook her head. "I read the messages. 'She's sick. I can't leave her.' Not because he loved me. Because he couldn't leave. Because I was dying."

Aries took her other hand. "Jay, listen to me. Keifer loves you. He's an idiot. He's careless. But he loves you."

She pulled her hands away. "Then why? Why did he keep talking to her? Why didn't he block her? Why did he let me find out like this?"

Neither of them could answer.

She lay back. Her eyes on the ceiling. Her voice flat. "I want to go home. Not the mansion. Our old apartment. Where it was just us. Where things were simple. Where I knew who I was."

Percy squeezed her hand. "Okay, Jay. Okay. We'll take you home."

---

The Hallway

Keifer waited in the hallway. His face pale. His hands shaking.

Percy came out first. His face hard. "She wants to go home. Not the mansion. The old apartment. She needs space."

Keifer stepped forward. "I need to see her. I need to explain."

Percy blocked him. "She doesn't want to see you. She doesn't want to hear your explanations. She needs time."

Keifer grabbed his arm. "Percy, please. I need to—"

Percy pulled away. "You need to give her space. You need to figure out why you did this. And then you need to fix it."

He walked away. Aries followed. Both of them leaving Keifer alone in the hallway.

---

The Window

Keifer stood outside her room. Watching through the small window.

She was sitting up now. Mamma beside her. Keiran in her lap. Rex in his hand. Keigan reading to her. Something about volcanoes. Something about rebuilding.

She was smiling. Small. But real. Her hand stroking Keiran's hair. Her eyes on Keigan's face.

She looked peaceful. Safe. Whole.

Without him.

He pressed his hand against the glass. Wished he could reach her. Wished he could explain. Wished he could undo everything.

But he couldn't. He'd hurt her. Again. And again. And again.

And now she was on the other side of the glass. And he was alone.

---

The Night

They released her that evening. Mamma signed the papers. Percy carried her bag. Aries held her steady. Keiran held her hand. Keigan carried Rex.

They walked past him. All of them. Jay didn't look up. Didn't see him. Didn't want to see him.

He reached for her. "Jay."

She stopped. Her body stiff. Her hand tightening on Keiran's.

"Jay, please. Let me explain. Let me—"

She turned. Her face was pale. Her eyes were red. Her voice was quiet.

"Not now, Keifer. I can't. Not now."

She walked away. Her family around her. Her hand in Keiran's. Her heart closed to him.

He stood in the hallway. Alone. Watching her leave. Watching his life walk away.

---

The Car

He drove to the mansion alone. The house was dark. Empty. Quiet.

He walked through the rooms. Their room. Their bathroom. Their closet. Her clothes still there. Her smell still there. Her presence still there.

But she wasn't.

He sat on the edge of the bed. Her pillow in his hands. Her scent in his lungs. Her absence in his heart.

He pulled out his phone. Opened Instagram. Found Vanessa's messages. All of them. Going back months. Years.

He blocked her. Every account. Every number. Every way she could reach him.

Then he deleted Instagram. Deleted every social media. Deleted every way anyone could reach him except the people who mattered.

But it was too late. The damage was done. The messages were seen. The trust was broken.

He lay on the bed. Her pillow against his face. Her scent in his lungs. Her absence in his heart.

And he cried.

---

The Apartment

Jay sat on the floor of their old apartment. The walls were bare. The furniture was gone. But she was here. Where it started. Where it was simple. Where she knew who she was.

Percy sat beside her. Aries across from her. Keiran asleep in the other room. Keigan reading by the window.

"What do you need, Jay?" Aries asked. "What do you need from us?"

She looked at him. Her brother. Her protector. Her rock.

"I need to think. I need to feel. I need to figure out who I am. Without him."

Percy took her hand. "You're Jay Mariano. You're a fighter. You're a survivor. You're our sister. That's who you are. With or without him."

She squeezed his hand. "I know. I know. But I loved him. I loved him so much. And I thought he loved me."

Aries moved closer. "He does love you, Jay. He's an idiot. He's careless. But he loves you."

She looked at him. "Then why? Why did he let her keep messaging? Why didn't he tell me? Why did I have to find out like this?"

Neither of them had an answer.

She lay back. Her eyes on the ceiling. Her hand in Percy's. Her heart slowly breaking.

"I don't know if I can go back. I don't know if I can trust him again."

Percy squeezed her hand. "Then don't. Not until you're ready. Not until he proves he deserves it."

She closed her eyes. Let the tears come. Let the pain wash over her.

"I'm so tired, Percy. I'm so tired of fighting."

He pulled her close. "Then rest, Jay. Rest. We'll fight for you."

She slept. Her head on his shoulder. Her hand in Aries's. Her heart slowly healing.
