Chapter 44 - apology

Chapter 41: The Apology

The Morning After

Jay woke on the floor of the old apartment.

Her body ached. Her head throbbed. Her heart was heavy. She was curled against Percy's side, her head on his shoulder, his arm around her. Aries was asleep against the wall across from her. Keigan was curled in the corner, his book still open on his chest. Keiran was in the bedroom, Rex clutched in his hand.

She lay still for a moment. Let the memories of yesterday wash over her. The messages. The photos. The words. She's sick. I can't leave her.

She closed her eyes. Let the tears come. Quiet. Silent. Endless.

Percy stirred. His arm tightened around her. "Jay? You okay?"

She shook her head. Didn't speak. Couldn't speak.

He pulled her closer. "I know, baby. I know."

---

The Morning

Mamma arrived at sunrise. A bag of fresh clothes. A basket of food. A heart full of love.

She found them on the floor. Her children. Her broken, beautiful children.

"Oh, my loves." She knelt beside them. Kissed Jay's forehead. Kissed Percy's cheek. "I brought breakfast. And clean clothes. And love."

Jay sat up slowly. Her eyes swollen. Her face pale. "Mamma. You didn't have to—"

Mamma pulled her into her arms. Held her tight. "Yes, I did. You're my daughter. I'll always come."

Jay cried. Quietly. Into Mamma's shoulder. All the fear. All the hurt. All the confusion.

"I don't know what to do," she whispered. "I don't know how to—"

Mamma pulled back. Looked at her. "You don't have to know right now. You just have to breathe. To eat. To rest. The rest will come."

---

The Food

They ate on the floor of the empty apartment. Mamma's cooking. Home-cooked. Love in every bite.

Keiran woke up. Climbed into Jay's lap. Rex in his hand. "Kuya Jay. Are you still sad?"

She kissed his forehead. "A little, Keiran. But I'm getting better."

He nodded. Placed Rex in her hand. "Rex will help. He's good at sad. He helps me when I'm sad."

She held the dinosaur. Smiled. Small. But real. "Thank you, Keiran. I needed this."

He nodded seriously. "I know. That's why I brought him."

---

The Visitor

The knock came at mid-morning. Soft. Hesitant.

Percy stood. Crossed to the door. Opened it.

Keifer stood in the hallway. His face pale. His eyes red. His hands shaking. He looked like he hadn't slept. He looked like he'd been crying.

Percy's jaw tightened. "She doesn't want to see you."

Keifer's voice cracked. "Please. I need to see her. I need to explain. I need to—"

Percy stepped forward. Blocking the doorway. "She said she needs time. She needs space. You need to give her that."

Keifer's hand gripped the doorframe. "Percy, please. I know I messed up. I know I hurt her. But I need to—"

"What? Explain? Apologize? Make it better?" Percy's voice was hard. "You can't make this better, Keifer. Not right now. Maybe not ever."

Keifer flinched. "I know. I know. But I have to try. I have to—"

"Keifer."

Jay's voice. Quiet. From behind Percy.

Percy turned. "Jay, you don't have to—"

She moved past him. Into the doorway. Her face pale. Her eyes red. Her hands steady.

Keifer looked at her. Those storm-gray eyes. Broken. Scared. Hoping.

"Jay. Please. Let me explain. Let me—"

She stepped back. "Not here. Not like this. Come back tonight. After Keiran is asleep. After I've had time to think."

He nodded. "Okay. Tonight. I'll come back tonight."

She closed the door. Leaned against it. Her heart pounding. Her hands shaking.

Percy moved to her side. "Are you sure? You don't have to see him. You don't have to—"

She nodded. "I know. But I need to. I need to hear what he has to say. I need to know if there's anything left to save."

---

The Day

The hours crawled. Jay sat by the window. Watching the street below. Watching the people pass. Watching the light change.

Keiran played on the floor. Rex beside him. Drawing dinosaurs. Showing her each one. "This one is a T-Rex. He's sad. Like Kuya Kai."

Jay looked at the drawing. A dinosaur with storm-gray eyes. Tears on its face. "Why is he sad, Keiran?"

Keiran shrugged. "Because he lost someone. He's waiting for her to come back."

She pulled him into her lap. Held him close. "Maybe she will. Maybe she just needs time."

Keiran nodded. "That's what Rex says. He says Kuya Kai is sorry. He says Kuya Kai loves you. He says you should listen."

She kissed his forehead. "Tell Rex I'll listen. Tonight."

---

The Evening

Keiran fell asleep in the bedroom. Rex on the pillow beside him. Keigan reading by the window. Percy and Aries on the floor. Mamma in the corner. Waiting.

The knock came at eight. Soft. Hesitant.

Jay stood. Her legs shaking. Her heart pounding. "Let him in."

Percy opened the door.

Keifer stood in the hallway. A small box in his hands. His face pale. His eyes wet.

He looked at Jay. "Can I come in?"

She nodded. Stepped back.

He walked into the apartment. Looked at the empty walls. The bare floors. The ghosts of their life together.

Percy moved to Jay's side. "We'll be in the bedroom. If you need us."

She nodded. Watched them go. Percy. Aries. Keigan. Mamma. All of them leaving her alone with him.

---

The Silence

They stood in the empty room. The space between them. The weight of everything.

Keifer spoke first. His voice cracked. "I brought you something. I know it doesn't fix anything. I know it doesn't make it better. But I wanted you to have it."

He held out the box. Small. Velvet. She opened it.

A key. To their house. Their room. Their life.

He swallowed. "I want you to come home. When you're ready. If you're ready. I want you to know there's always a place for you. Always."

She closed the box. Looked at him. "Why didn't you block her, Keifer? Why didn't you tell me? Why did I have to find out like that?"

He closed his eyes. "I don't know. I was stupid. I was careless. I never thought she'd keep messaging. I never thought you'd see it. I never thought—"

"You never thought about how it would feel? For your wife to see another woman asking you on a date?"

He opened his eyes. His face wet. "I didn't. I was selfish. I was thoughtless. I was—"

She stepped closer. "You were scared. You almost died. And you pushed me away. Like I pushed you away. When I was sick."

He stared at her. "That's not— I didn't—"

She took his hand. "You did. The accident changed you. Made you scared. Made you angry. Made you push. I understand. I did the same thing. When I was sick. I pushed you away. I didn't tell you about the cancer. I tried to protect myself. To protect you."

He shook his head. "That's not the same. You were dying. I was just—"

She squeezed his hand. "You were hurting. You were scared. You didn't know how to handle it. So you pushed. And I pushed back. And now we're here."

He pulled her closer. "Jay, I never saw her. I never wanted her. I never—"

She put her hand on his chest. Felt his heart beating. Fast. Terrified. "I know. I know you didn't. But you let her keep messaging. You didn't block her. You didn't tell me. And that— that hurt. That hurt more than anything."

He bowed his head. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I was stupid. I was careless. I was—"

She lifted his face. Made him look at her. "You were human. You made a mistake. A stupid, careless, hurtful mistake. But you're my husband. And I love you."

He stared at her. "You still love me? After everything?"

She smiled. Small. Tired. But real. "I never stopped, Keifer. Not for one second. I was hurt. I was scared. But I never stopped loving you."

He pulled her into his arms. Held her like she was the only thing keeping him alive. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I love you. I love you so much."

She held him back. Let him cry. Let him shake. Let him break. "I know. I know. We're going to be okay. We're going to fix this. Together."

---

The Explanation

They sat on the floor. The empty apartment around them. The ghosts of their past. The promise of their future.

He told her everything. Vanessa from before. The messages that kept coming. His stupid decision not to block her. His careless assumption that Jay would never see.

"I didn't think, Jay. I didn't think about how it would look. How it would feel. I just— I ignored it. I pushed it aside. And I never thought—"

She took his hand. "What did she want? Really want?"

He looked at her. "She wanted— she thought— I don't know. I never asked. I never encouraged. I never—"

"But you didn't stop her. You didn't tell her no."

He bowed his head. "I know. I was a coward. I didn't want to deal with it. So I just let it sit there. Let it build. Let it become something it wasn't."

She squeezed his hand. "And now?"

He looked up. "I blocked her. Every account. Every number. Everything. I deleted Instagram. All of it. I don't want anything between us. Ever."

She studied his face. Those storm-gray eyes. Wet. Broken. Hoping. "Do you mean it? Really mean it?"

He pulled her closer. "I mean it. I swear. You're the only one I want. The only one I've ever wanted. Since the moment you walked into my office."

She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Forgiving. "I know. I know. We're going to be okay."

---

The Promise

They sat together. The apartment dark around them. The city lights through the window.

Keifer held her hand. "Come home. Tonight. I don't want to sleep without you."

She leaned against him. "I need time, Keifer. I need to think. To feel. To figure out who I am without you."

He pulled her closer. "I don't want you to be without me. I want—"

She put her hand on his chest. "I know. But I've been your wife, your assistant, your caretaker. I need to be Jay. Just Jay. For a little while."

He looked at her. "How long?"

She shook her head. "I don't know. A week. A month. I don't know."

He held her tighter. "I'll wait. However long it takes. I'll wait."

She kissed his cheek. "I know you will. That's why I married you."

---

The Goodbye

Percy appeared in the doorway. "Jay. Keiran's asking for you. He's scared."

She stood. Helped Keifer up. "I'll be right there."

Percy nodded. Disappeared.

She turned to Keifer. "You should go. It's late."

He took her hand. "Come home soon. Please."

She squeezed his hand. "I will. When I'm ready. When we're both ready."

He kissed her forehead. "I love you, Jay Watson. I'll wait forever if I have to."

She smiled. "I love you too, Keifer Watson. Don't make me wait too long."

He left. The door closed behind him. The apartment was quiet.

She leaned against the door. Her heart full. Her head clear. Her future uncertain.

But she knew. She knew they'd be okay. She knew they'd find their way back. She knew their love was stronger than any mistake. Any fear. Any distance.

She walked to the bedroom. Climbed onto the floor beside Percy. Curled against his side. Let his arms wrap around her.

"Did you forgive him?" he asked. Quiet. Careful.

She closed her eyes. "I'm working on it. We both are."

He kissed her hair. "That's my girl. That's my sister."

She smiled. Slept. Dreamed of storm-gray eyes. Of a key. Of a home. Of a forever waiting for her.
