Chapter 38: The Second Day

Morning Light

Jay woke to the sound of machines and the weight of Keifer's hand in hers.

She'd slept in the chair again. Neck stiff. Back aching. Hand still wrapped around his. She hadn't let go all night.

She opened her eyes. Found him watching her. Those storm-gray eyes tired but soft.

"You stayed," he whispered.

She kissed his knuckles. "Told you. Not leaving."

He smiled. Weak. But real. "You need a real bed. Real sleep. You can't keep sleeping in that chair."

She sat up. Stretched. Ignored the protest in her muscles. "I can sleep anywhere. I slept on fire escapes. Park benches. Hospital floors. This chair is luxury compared to some places I've slept."

His expression shifted. Something flickering behind his eyes. Pain. Not physical. Something deeper.

"Jay."

She waved him off. "Don't. Don't feel guilty. I'm exactly where I want to be. With you. Taking care of you. This is my choice. My honor. My privilege."

He pulled her hand to his chest. Held it against his heart. "I love you."

She leaned close. Kissed his forehead. "I love you too. Now. Let's get you cleaned up. The nurse will be here soon."

---

The Morning Ritual

The nurse came. Checked vitals. Changed bandages. Adjusted the IV.

Jay watched everything. Asked questions. Memorized instructions. When the nurse finished, Jay moved in.

She filled the basin with warm water. Grabbed the soft cloth. Pulled the curtain.

Keifer watched her. "You don't have to do this every day. The nurses can—"

She dipped the cloth in water. Squeezed it. "The nurses can do a lot of things. But they're not your wife. Close your eyes."

He closed his eyes.

She washed his face. Gentle. Careful. Avoiding the bruises that were now shifting from purple to yellow. Healing. Slowly.

She washed his arms. His hands. His chest. Working around the bandages. Avoiding the tender spots.

"You hum," he murmured.

She paused. "What?"

"When you take care of me. You hum. Softly. Like a lullaby."

She hadn't noticed. Didn't realize she was doing it. But she was. Some tune from childhood. Something her mother used to sing.

"My mom used to hum," she said quietly. "When she took care of us. When we were sick. When we were scared. It always made us feel safe."

She dipped the cloth again. Continued washing. Continued humming.

Keifer reached up. Caught her hand. Opened his eyes. "You make me feel safe, Jay. You always have."

She kissed his forehead. "Good. That's my job now. Making you feel safe. Taking care of you. Loving you."

He pulled her close. As close as his broken ribs would allow. "You're doing a perfect job, Mrs. Watson."

She smiled against his chest. "You're not so bad yourself, Mr. Watson."

---

Breakfast Battle

Mamma arrived with breakfast. Fresh food. Homemade. Smelling like heaven.

But Keifer wasn't hungry. His stomach churned from the pain meds. His head ached. His body was tired.

Jay sat beside him. Spoon in hand. "Open."

He shook his head. "Can't. Stomach. Not good."

She set the spoon down. Took his hand. "I remember that. The nausea. The not wanting to eat. The feeling that food was the enemy."

He looked at her. "When you were sick."

She nodded. "You used to sit beside me. For hours. Encouraging me to take one bite. Just one. For you."

He squeezed her hand. "And now it's my turn."

She picked up the spoon again. "One bite. Just one. For me."

He opened his mouth. She fed him a small piece of toast. He chewed. Swallowed. Waited.

His stomach settled. Just slightly.

"Good," she said. "Another. For Mamma."

Another bite.

"Another. For our future children."

He smiled. Took another bite.

"Another. For our porch. Our grandkids. Our forever."

He ate the whole piece of toast. And half a cup of soup. And a few sips of juice.

Mamma watched from the doorway. Crying quietly. Pappa beside her. Hand on her shoulder.

"He's lucky," Pappa whispered. "To have her."

Mamma nodded. "She's the best thing that ever happened to him."

---

Physical Therapy – Day Two

Diane returned. Cheerful. Unrelenting. "Mr. Watson! Ready to move!"

Keifer groaned. "I moved yesterday. Isn't that enough?"

Diane smiled. "Yesterday we sat up. Today we stand."

Jay moved to his side. "I'll help."

Diane nodded. "Good. We'll start slow. Just standing. Just for a minute."

Jay climbed onto the bed. Positioned herself behind him. "Okay. Lean on me."

Keifer hesitated. "Jay—"

She wrapped her arms around him. "Lean."

He leaned. His back against her chest. His head against her shoulder. She held him steady.

Diane directed. "Good. Now, let's swing your legs over the side. Slowly."

Jay helped him move. His broken leg heavy. His ribs protesting. His body fighting.

They got him sitting on the edge of the bed. His feet dangling. His hands gripping the mattress.

"Good," Diane said. "Now, stand."

Jay slid off the bed. Moved to his side. Wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "On three. One. Two. Three."

They stood together. His weight on her. His body shaking. His breath coming in gasps.

She held him steady. "I've got you. I've got you."

He stood for ten seconds. Then twenty. Then thirty.

Diane nodded. "Good. That's enough for today. Sit."

They sat together. Slowly. Carefully. His weight back on the bed. His breath evening out.

Jay kissed his forehead. "You did good, Mr. Watson."

He leaned into her. "I had help."

She smiled. "That's what wives are for."

---

The Afternoon

Keifer slept after therapy. Exhausted. Body healing. Mind resting.

Jay sat beside him. Watching him breathe. Watching his chest rise and fall. Watching the bruises slowly fade.

Mamma came in. Sat beside her. "You need to rest too, darling."

Jay shook her head. "I'm fine."

"You slept in a chair. Again. You're not fine."

Jay looked at her. "He didn't leave me. When I was sick. When I was dying. He didn't leave. I'm not leaving him."

Mamma took her hand. "I know, baby. I know. But you need to take care of yourself too. He needs you strong. He needs you healthy."

Jay looked at Keifer. Sleeping. Peaceful. Alive.

"I'll rest," she said finally. "When he's better. When he doesn't need me every second."

Mamma squeezed her hand. "He'll always need you, darling. That's not going to change. But he needs you whole. So rest. Eat. Take care of yourself. For him."

Jay nodded. "Okay. For him."

Mamma kissed her forehead. "That's my girl."

---

The Visitors

Keiran arrived first. Climbing onto the bed carefully. Rex in hand.

"Kuya Kai is sleeping," he whispered. Loudly.

Jay smiled. "He's resting, Keiran. His body is healing."

Keiran nodded. Placed Rex on the pillow. "Rex will watch him. Keep him safe." He looked at Jay. "You look tired, Kuya Jay."

She pulled him into her lap. "I'm okay, little monster."

He studied her face. Serious. "You need to rest too. Mamma says. Rest is important. For healing."

She kissed his forehead. "You sound like Keigan."

He beamed. "I'm smart! Like Kuya Koya!"

Keigan appeared in the doorway. "I heard my name."

Keiran waved. "I'm smart! Like you!"

Keigan considered. "You're improving. But you still think dinosaurs invented everything."

Keiran nodded. "They did! Dinosaurs invented everything! Even hospitals!"

Keigan sighed. "Dinosaurs did not invent hospitals."

Keiran crossed his arms. "Then who did?"

Keigan opened his mouth. Closed it. "I'll research it."

Keiran grinned. "SEE! Dinosaurs invented everything!"

---

Percy's Chaos

Percy arrived with energy. Too much energy. Aries behind him, trying to contain him.

"KEIFER! WAKE UP! I HAVE JOKES!"

Keifer stirred. Opened one eye. "If you make me laugh, I'll kill you. My ribs will kill me. But I'll kill you first."

Percy gasped. "That's not very nice! I'm here to cheer you up!"

Aries pulled him back. "He's here to be annoying. I'm here to stop him."

Keifer smiled. Weak but real. "Good. Keep doing your job."

Percy slumped. "Everyone hates my jokes."

Jay patted his arm. "We don't hate your jokes, Perce. We just hate when Keifer laughs and breaks his ribs."

Percy brightened. "So when his ribs are healed, I can tell jokes?"

Jay nodded. "When his ribs are healed, you can tell all the jokes you want."

Percy pumped his fist. "YES! I'M ALREADY PLANNING!"

Aries covered his face. "God help us all."

---

The Bathroom – Day Two

The nurse explained the process. Walking. With crutches. To the bathroom.

Keifer's face set. Determined. "I can do it."

Jay moved to his side. "We can do it. Together."

The nurse brought the crutches. Adjusted them to his height. Explained the movement. Keifer listened. Nodded. Ready.

He stood. Crutches under his arms. Weight on his good leg. His broken leg hovering.

Jay stayed close. Hands ready. "I've got you."

He took a step. Then another. His arms shaking. His face pale. But moving.

She walked beside him. Ready to catch him. Ready to hold him. Ready for anything.

He made it to the bathroom. Made it back. Each step a victory.

When he was back in bed, he pulled her close. "I did it."

She kissed his forehead. "You did it, Mr. Watson."

He closed his eyes. "With help."

She smiled. "That's what marriage is. Help. In all forms. For all things."

He held her hand. "Best decision I ever made. Marrying you."

She squeezed back. "Best decision I ever made too."

---

Evening

The room filled again. Mamma with dinner. Pappa with news. Keiran with drawings. Keigan with facts. Percy with jokes. Aries with calm.

Keifer ate more today. Half a bowl of soup. A piece of bread. Some fruit. Jay fed him each bite. Watched his color improve. Watched his strength return.

Keiran showed his drawings. Volcanoes with faces. Dinosaurs with hats. A picture of Keifer with wings.

"Kuya Kai is an angel now! With wings! Because he's healing!"

Keifer examined the drawing. "I'm not an angel, Keiran. Just a man with a broken leg."

Keiran nodded seriously. "Angels have broken legs sometimes. It's okay."

Keigan looked up. "Angels don't have physical bodies. They're spiritual entities. They can't break legs."

Keiran crossed his arms. "Then how do they fly?"

Keigan opened his mouth. Closed it. "I'll research it."

Keiran grinned. "See! Dinosaurs!"

"What do dinosaurs have to do with angels?"

Keiran shrugged. "Everything. Dinosaurs are everything."

---

The Night

Visitors left. The room quieted. Just the machines. Just the city lights. Just them.

Jay settled into the chair. Her hand in his. Her eyes on his face.

He squeezed her hand. "Jay. Come here."

She looked at him. "You need rest."

He pulled her hand to his chest. "I need you. Come here."

She hesitated. Then climbed onto the bed beside him. Carefully. Avoiding his leg. Avoiding his ribs. Curling against his side.

His arm came around her. Weak but determined. "Better."

She rested her head on his shoulder. "This chair is uncomfortable. This bed is much better."

He kissed her hair. "You should have said something earlier."

She smiled against his chest. "I didn't want to hurt you."

He held her closer. "You could never hurt me, Jay. You could only heal me."

She looked up at him. Those storm-gray eyes tired but soft. "I love you, Keifer Watson."

He kissed her forehead. "I love you too, Jay Watson. Now sleep. You need it."

She closed her eyes. His heart beneath her ear. His breath warm on her hair. His arms around her.

"I'll sleep," she murmured. "But only if you do too."

He smiled. "Deal."

They slept. Together. In the small hospital bed. Wrapped around each other. Healing together.

The machines beeped softly. The city lights glowed outside. The world continued spinning.

But in that room, time stopped. Just them. Just this moment. Just the quiet miracle of being alive together.

---

The Promise

In the darkness, Jay whispered. "Second day down. Many more to go."

Keifer stirred. "Many more days. With you. That's all I need."

She pressed closer. "You have them. All of them. Every single one."

He kissed her hair. "Forever, Mrs. Watson."

She smiled. "Forever, Mr. Watson."

They slept. The moon rose. The stars watched. The hospital held them safe.

Mr. and Mrs. Watson. Day two of healing. Day two of love. Day two of forever.
