Chapter 19 - the collapse

Chapter 17: The Collapse

The Morning After Diagnosis

Jay woke to sunlight and Keifer's arms.

For a moment, everything was normal.

Warm.

Safe.

Perfect.

Then memory crashed back.

Cancer.

Hospital.

Secret revealed.

Keifer's hurt face.

She pressed closer to him.

Needed his warmth.

His strength.

He stirred.

Pulled her tighter.

Kissed her hair.

"Morning," he murmured.

Voice rough with sleep.

"How do you feel?"

She assessed.

Tired.

Weak.

Scared.

But alive.

"Okay.

I think.

You?"

He lifted his head.

Looked at her.

Those storm-gray eyes soft but serious.

"I'm where I belong.

With you.

That's all that matters."

She smiled.

Small.

Grateful.

"I love you."

"I love you too.

Now.

We have a big day today.

Treatment planning.

More tests.

Are you ready?"

She nodded.

Not ready.

But willing.

For him.

For them.

For herself.

---

Breakfast in the Hospital Room

Mamma arrived with food.

Real food.

Home-cooked.

Love on a tray.

Keiran bounced in behind her.

Rex in hand.

Ready for duty.

"Kuya Jay!

I brought Rex!

He's going to stay with you all day!

For protection!"

He placed the dinosaur carefully on her bedside table.

Saluted.

Jay's eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you, Keiran.

I feel much safer already."

He nodded seriously.

"Good.

Rex is the best protector.

He kept me safe from monsters under my bed.

He'll keep you safe from cancer."

The room went quiet.

Such a big word from such a small mouth.

Jay pulled him close.

Hugged him tight.

"I love you, little monster."

He hugged back.

"I love you too, Kuya Jay.

Now get better.

We have dinosaur adventures planned."

She laughed.

Wiped her eyes.

"It's a date."

---

Keigan appeared in the doorway.

Book in hand as always.

But his eyes were worried.

"Kuya Jay.

I brought you something."

He held out a small notebook.

Handmade.

Cover decorated with volcanoes.

"I wrote down everything I know about volcanoes.

They're strong.

They survive.

They rebuild.

I thought maybe it would help."

Jay took the notebook.

Flipped through pages.

Drawings.

Facts.

Notes.

Love.

"Keigan, this is beautiful.

I'll read every page.

Every word."

He nodded.

Pleased.

"Good.

Volcanoes are my favorite.

Now they're yours too."

---

Aries and Percy arrived together.

Both trying to be strong.

Both failing.

Percy grabbed her hand.

"Okay.

Here's the plan.

You fight.

We support.

You win.

End of story."

Aries kissed her forehead.

"No arguments.

No giving up.

You're a Mariano.

We fight."

Jay smiled at them.

Her brothers.

Her rocks.

"Wouldn't dream of giving up.

Not with all of you behind me."

Pappa appeared last.

Quiet.

Strong.

Squeezed her shoulder.

"Whatever you need.

Whatever it takes.

We're here."

Jay looked around the room.

At her family.

Her love.

Her life.

Fight,

she told herself.

Fight for them.

---

The Treatment Plan

The doctor arrived mid-morning.

Papers in hand.

Serious face.

Keifer held Jay's hand.

Refused to let go.

"Jay, we need to start treatment immediately.

Chemotherapy begins tomorrow.

You'll need to stay in the hospital for the first round.

We'll monitor you closely."

Jay nodded.

"Okay.

Tomorrow."

The doctor continued.

Explaining side effects.

Risks.

Success rates.

Timeline.

Keifer asked questions.

Took notes.

Planned.

Fought for her.

Through it all, Jay felt the weakness growing.

The fatigue deepening.

But she ignored it.

Pushed through.

Smiled.

I'm fine,

she told herself.

I'm fine.

---

Afternoon

Visitors came and went.

Nurses checked vitals.

Papers were signed.

Plans were made.

Jay grew tired.

So tired.

But she didn't say anything.

Didn't want to worry anyone.

Didn't want to seem weak.

Keifer noticed.

Of course he noticed.

He noticed everything about her.

"Jay.

You need to rest.

Lie down."

She shook her head.

"I'm fine.

Just a little tired."

He cupped her face.

Made her look at him.

"You're pale.

Your eyes are heavy.

Rest.

Please."

She wanted to argue.

Wanted to prove she was strong.

But her body betrayed her.

"Okay.

Just for a little while."

She lay back.

Closed her eyes.

Felt sleep pulling her under.

Keifer kissed her forehead.

"I'll be right here.

Always."

She smiled.

Slept.

---

The Collapse

She woke hours later.

Disoriented.

Confused.

Weak.

So weak.

The room was dim.

Evening now.

Quiet.

Keifer was in the chair beside her.

Asleep.

Hand still holding hers.

Face peaceful despite everything.

Jay smiled.

Loved him so much it hurt.

She needed the bathroom.

Needed to move.

Needed to prove she was okay.

Carefully, she pulled her hand from his.

He didn't stir.

Exhausted from days of worry.

She sat up slowly.

Dizzy.

So dizzy.

Just standing,

she told herself.

Just standing and walking.

She stood.

The room spun.

Her legs buckled.

She reached for the bed.

Missed.

And fell.

---

Keifer woke to the sound.

A thud.

A cry.

Jay on the floor.

"JAY!"

He was beside her in seconds.

Gathering her in his arms.

Her eyes were open but dazed.

Her body limp.

"Nurse!

HELP!

SOMEONE HELP!"

His voice echoed through the room.

Through the hall.

Through his own terrified heart.

---

Chaos

Nurses flooded in.

Doctors followed.

Hands reaching.

Machines beeping.

Voices calling.

Keifer was pushed aside.

Forced to let go.

Forced to watch.

They lifted her onto the bed.

Checked her vitals.

Hooked up monitors.

Spoke in urgent tones he couldn't understand.

He stood frozen.

Watching.

Terrified.

Alone in a crowd.

A nurse touched his arm.

"Sir?

We need you to wait outside."

He shook his head.

"No.

I'm not leaving her."

"Sir, please.

We need space to work.

You can come back soon.

I promise."

He looked at Jay.

Unconscious.

Pale.

Fragile.

I can't lose her,

he thought.

I can't.

But he walked out.

Because he had to.

Because they needed to save her.

---

The Waiting

The hallway was cold.

Bright.

Empty except for him.

He leaned against the wall.

Slid down until he sat on the floor.

Head in his hands.

Praying.

Begging.

Pleading.

Please.

Please let her be okay.

I can't do this without her.

Please.

Footsteps.

Mamma.

Pappa.

Aries.

Percy.

Keigan.

Keiran in Pappa's arms.

They'd been called.

Of course.

The hospital notified family.

Mamma knelt beside him.

Took his face in her hands.

"Keifer.

Look at me."

He looked.

Those storm-gray eyes broken.

Terrified.

"She collapsed, Mamma.

She just—

She stood up and—

And she fell.

And I couldn't—

I couldn't catch her."

Mamma pulled him close.

Held him like she did when he was small.

"She's going to be okay.

She's strong.

She's a fighter.

And she has all of us."

He clung to her.

Cried like he hadn't cried since childhood.

"I can't lose her, Mamma.

I can't."

She held him tighter.

"You won't, baby.

You won't."

---

The Wait Continues

Percy paced.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Muttering prayers under his breath.

Aries sat frozen.

Staring at the door.

Willing it to open.

Keigan held Keiran's hand.

Being strong for his little brother.

Even though he was scared too.

Keiran clutched Rex.

Whispered to him.

"Protect Kuya Jay, Rex.

She needs you."

Pappa made calls.

Handled things.

Kept the world moving.

Mamma held Keifer.

Never let go.

Never stopped believing.

And they waited.

All of them.

Together.

Terrified.

Loving.

---

The Doctor

Finally.

After what felt like forever.

The door opened.

A doctor emerged.

Not the usual one.

Someone new.

Someone with a serious face.

"Family of Jasper Mariano?"

Everyone stood.

Surged forward.

Keifer reached her first.

"How is she?

Is she okay?

What happened?"

The doctor held up a hand.

"She's stable.

The collapse was caused by dehydration and weakness.

Her body is struggling.

The cancer is progressing faster than we hoped."

Keifer's heart stopped.

"Faster?

What does that mean?"

The doctor's face softened.

"It means we need to start treatment immediately.

Not tomorrow.

Tonight.

The cancer is aggressive.

We can't wait."

Keifer nodded.

"Then do it.

Whatever it takes.

Save her."

The doctor nodded.

"We will.

But I need you to understand.

The next few weeks will be hard.

Very hard.

She'll need all of you."

Mamma stepped forward.

"She has all of us.

Every one.

Whatever she needs."

The doctor smiled.

Small.

Genuine.

"Good.

That's what will save her.

Love and family."

---

Seeing Jay

They let Keifer in first.

Just him.

Just for a moment.

Jay was awake.

Pale.

Weak.

But awake.

Eyes finding his immediately.

"Keifer?"

He crossed to her in seconds.

Took her hand.

Kissed it.

Pressed it to his cheek.

"I'm here.

I'm right here.

Don't ever scare me like that again."

She smiled.

Weak.

Sorry.

"I tried to walk.

Wanted to prove I was okay."

He shook his head.

Tears falling.

"You don't have to prove anything.

Just rest.

Just fight.

Just stay."

She squeezed his hand.

"I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry."

He kissed her forehead.

"Stop apologizing.

Just—

Just stay with me.

Okay?

Stay."

She nodded.

"I will.

I promise."

He climbed onto the bed beside her.

Careful of tubes.

Careful of wires.

Curled around her like a shield.

"I love you," he whispered.

"So much.

You can't leave me.

I won't let you."

She smiled against his chest.

"Wouldn't dream of it."

---

The Family Visits

One by one, they came in.

Mamma first.

Kissing her forehead.

Whispering prayers.

Promising soup.

Pappa next.

Squeezing her hand.

Nodding once.

"Fight hard, Jay.

We're all behind you."

Aries held her.

Shaking.

"I can't lose you, little sister.

You're my whole world."

Percy kissed her cheek.

"You're the strongest person I know.

Prove it.

Beat this thing."

Keigan stood by the bed.

Serious.

"Volcanoes erupt.

But they also create new land.

You're creating something new.

Fight for it."

Keiran climbed up carefully.

Rex in hand.

Placed the dinosaur on her pillow.

"Rex says you have to get better.

He needs you.

I need you.

We all need you."

Jay kissed his forehead.

"Tell Rex I'll do my best."

Keiran nodded.

"He knows.

He said you're the bravest."

---

The First Treatment

That night, chemotherapy began.

Jay lay in the bed.

IV in her arm.

Medicine dripping into her veins.

Poison meant to save her.

Keifer held her hand.

Never let go.

Watched every drop.

Every moment.

"It's starting," he whispered.

"The fight.

You're doing it."

She smiled.

Weak.

Tired.

"With you here?

Easy."

He laughed.

Quiet.

Tears in his eyes.

"You're amazing.

You know that?"

She squeezed his hand.

"So are you.

Thank you for staying."

He kissed her knuckles.

"Always.

Forever.

No matter what."

---

Side Effects Begin

Hours later, the nausea started.

Jay's body rebelled against the poison.

Vomiting.

Shaking.

Crying.

Keifer held her through it all.

Rubbed her back.

Wiped her face.

Whispered love into her ear.

"I'm here.

I'm right here.

Let it out.

I've got you."

She clung to him.

Hated her weakness.

Loved his strength.

"I'm sorry," she gasped between heaves.

"This is disgusting.

You should leave."

He held her tighter.

"Never.

This is where I belong.

Right here.

With you."

She cried.

From pain.

From love.

From gratitude.

---

The Long Night

Night stretched into forever.

Jay slept fitfully.

Woke often.

Sick.

Scared.

In pain.

Keifer never left.

Never slept.

Watched her.

Loved her.

Fought with her.

At some point, Mamma appeared.

Forced him to drink water.

Eat something.

Rest his eyes.

But he wouldn't leave the room.

Wouldn't go far.

Stayed within arm's reach.

Always.

Mamma understood.

Brought blankets.

Coffee.

Love.

"You're good for her," she whispered.

"Your love is saving her."

Keifer looked at Jay.

Sleeping fitfully.

Pale.

Fighting.

"I hope so.

Because she's saving me too."

---

Morning

Sunlight crept through the blinds.

A new day.

Another battle.

Jay woke slowly.

Found Keifer in the chair beside her.

Asleep at last.

Hand still holding hers.

She smiled.

Loved him.

So much.

A nurse came in.

Checked vitals.

Smiled.

"Good morning.

You made it through the first night.

How do you feel?"

Jay assessed.

Weak.

Nauseous.

Tired.

But alive.

"Like I fought a battle and barely won."

The nurse nodded.

"That's exactly what happened.

But you're here.

You're fighting.

That's what matters."

Keifer stirred.

Opened his eyes.

Found her awake.

Smiled.

"Hey."

"Hey yourself."

He stretched.

Winced.

"I fell asleep.

I'm sorry.

I meant to stay awake."

She squeezed his hand.

"You needed rest.

I'm glad you slept."

He kissed her knuckles.

"How do you feel?"

"Alive.

Thanks to you."

He shook his head.

"Thanks to you.

You're the fighter.

I'm just the cheerleader."

She laughed.

Weak.

But real.

"My favorite cheerleader."

---

The Family Returns

Soon the room filled again.

Mamma with food.

Keiran with dinosaurs.

Everyone with love.

They gathered around her bed.

A circle of strength.

A wall of love.

Keiran climbed up carefully.

Placed Rex on her pillow.

"Rex says good morning.

He says you're doing great."

Jay kissed his forehead.

"Tell Rex thank you.

I couldn't do this without him."

Keiran nodded seriously.

"I know.

That's why he's here."

Keigan stood by the bed.

Quiet.

Observing.

Then:

"Kuya Jay.

You made it through the first night.

That's the hardest part.

It gets easier."

She smiled at him.

"How do you know?"

He shrugged.

"I read.

Cancer patients who have family support do better.

You have the best family.

You'll do best."

Percy snorted.

"Kid's got a point.

We're pretty great."

Aries rolled his eyes.

"Modest too."

Everyone laughed.

Even Jay.

Even through the pain.

---

Afternoon

More visitors.

More love.

More fighting.

Jay grew tired again.

But fought to stay awake.

Didn't want to miss a moment.

Didn't want to waste time.

Keifer noticed.

Of course he noticed.

"Jay.

Rest.

We'll be here when you wake."

She shook her head.

"What if—

What if I don't wake?"

He cupped her face.

Made her look at him.

"You will.

You'll wake.

And I'll be right here.

Every time.

I promise."

She searched his eyes.

Found truth.

Found love.

Found forever.

"Okay.

I'll rest.

But stay?"

He kissed her forehead.

"Always.

I'm not going anywhere."

She closed her eyes.

Sleep pulling her under.

But safe.

Loved.

Not alone.

---

Evening

She woke to darkness and quiet.

Just the machines.

Just Keifer.

He was in the chair.

Watching her.

Those storm-gray eyes soft.

"Hey," he whispered.

"Welcome back."

She smiled.

Weak.

Tired.

Happy.

"Hey.

You stayed."

He kissed her hand.

"Always.

Told you."

She looked around.

"Everyone else?"

"Went home to rest.

They'll be back tomorrow.

Mamma made me promise to call if anything changes."

She nodded.

"Good.

You need rest too."

He shook his head.

"I rest when you're better."

She tugged his hand.

"Come here."

He raised an eyebrow.

"The bed?"

"Come here.

I need you closer."

He couldn't refuse her.

Never could.

Climbed carefully beside her.

Curled around her.

Held her close.

"Better?" he whispered.

She pressed closer.

"Much better."

They lay there.

Quiet.

Together.

Fighting.

---

The Promise

In the darkness, Jay spoke.

"Keifer?

I'm scared.

I'm really scared."

He held her tighter.

"I know.

Me too.

But we're scared together.

Remember?"

She nodded.

"Together."

He kissed her hair.

"We're going to beat this, Jay.

I don't know how.

I don't know when.

But we're going to beat it."

She looked up at him.

Those storm-gray eyes so sure.

So loving.

So strong.

"How do you know?"

He smiled.

Soft.

Certain.

"Because I've seen you fight.

You don't quit.

You never quit.

And now you have all of us fighting with you.

Cancer doesn't stand a chance."

She laughed.

Quiet.

Tears falling.

"I love you."

He wiped her tears.

"I love you too.

Now rest.

Tomorrow we fight again."

She closed her eyes.

Safe in his arms.

Scared but not alone.

Weak but not defeated.

Tomorrow was another battle.

But she would fight it.

With him.

With her family.

With love.

And maybe.

Just maybe.

Love would be enough.
