Chapter 18 - the truth

Chapter 16: The Secret She Carried

Three Months Earlier

The clinic was small.

The kind with flickering lights and old magazines.

Jay sat alone in the waiting room.

Hands shaking.

Heart pounding.

She'd come alone on purpose.

Didn't want to worry Aries and Percy.

Didn't want to be a burden.

Didn't want to scare anyone.

The fatigue had been getting worse.

The night sweats.

The bruises that appeared from nowhere.

She'd ignored it for weeks.

Told herself it was stress.

Told herself she was fine.

But deep down, she knew.

Something was wrong.

"Jasper Mariano?"

The doctor's voice pulled her from her thoughts.

She stood.

Followed him into the small exam room.

---

Dr. Reyes was kind.

Gentle eyes.

Soft voice.

The kind of doctor who held your hand when giving bad news.

He held her hand now.

"Jay.

The tests came back.

I'm so sorry."

She knew.

Before he said it.

She knew.

"It's leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

It's aggressive.

But we caught it early."

Jay stared at him.

The words floated in the air.

Leukemia.

Cancer.

Aggressive.

"How long?" she whispered.

Dr. Reyes squeezed her hand.

"With treatment?

Good chance of remission.

But we need to start immediately.

Chemotherapy.

Radiation.

Possibly a bone marrow transplant."

Jay nodded.

Numb.

Empty.

"Without treatment?"

The doctor's face fell.

"Months.

Maybe less."

---

Jay walked out of the clinic into bright sunlight.

The world looked the same.

But everything had changed.

She held the papers in her hand.

Test results.

Treatment plans.

Cost estimates.

The cost.

It was impossible.

She had no insurance.

No savings.

Three jobs that barely kept her afloat.

Her brothers were barely surviving.

Keifer was...

What was Keifer?

Her boss.

Her almost-something.

Too new.

Too fragile.

Too soon.

She couldn't tell him.

Couldn't burden him with this.

Couldn't watch pity in those storm-gray eyes.

She would handle this alone.

Like she'd handled everything alone.

---

The Decision

That night, Jay sat on the fire escape of their tiny apartment.

Staring at the stars.

Making a choice.

She wouldn't tell anyone.

Not Aries.

Not Percy.

Not Keifer.

She would work as long as she could.

Save what little money she had.

Find a way.

Treatment was expensive.

But maybe...

Maybe she could do it alone.

Maybe she could fight without dragging anyone else into her darkness.

She thought of Keifer.

His smile.

His eyes.

The way he looked at her like she was something precious.

He just started living again,

she thought.

He just started feeling.

I can't do this to him.

She made her decision.

She would carry this alone.

For as long as she could.

---

The Months That Followed

Jay became a master of disguise.

She hid the fatigue behind bright smiles.

Explained away the bruises as clumsiness.

Blamed the night sweats on warm weather.

She went to work.

She sang at the pub.

She laughed with her brothers.

She fell deeper in love with Keifer.

And every few weeks, she slipped away.

To the clinic.

For tests.

For consultations.

For secret battles no one knew about.

Dr. Reyes begged her to start treatment.

"The cancer is progressing, Jay.

You're running out of time."

She always nodded.

Always promised to think about it.

Always went back to her life.

Her secret life.

Her borrowed time.

---

The Morning of the Comb

It started like any other morning.

Sunlight streamed through the windows of their room.

Keifer's arms were around her.

Warm.

Safe.

Perfect.

Jay stretched slowly.

Pressed closer to him.

Listened to his heartbeat.

She thought about the papers hidden in her bag.

The test results from yesterday.

The doctor's urgent warnings.

You're running out of time, Jay.

But here.

In his arms.

None of that existed.

Only love.

Only peace.

Only them.

He stirred.

Mumbled something.

Pulled her tighter.

"Morning," she whispered.

He kissed her hair.

"Morning, love."

They lay there.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Together.

Then Keifer sat up.

Looked at her.

Smiled that soft smile.

"Your hair is a mess."

She laughed.

"It's always a mess.

You knew that when you fell in love with me."

He kissed her nose.

"I love your messy hair.

But today I want to fix it."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You?

Fix my hair?

You can barely fix your own."

He climbed off the bed.

Retrieved a brush from her bag.

Sat behind her.

"Trust me?"

She smiled.

"Always."

---

The Combing

He was gentle.

So gentle.

His fingers worked through her tangles.

Slow.

Careful.

Loving.

Jay closed her eyes.

Let herself relax.

Let him take care of her.

If only you knew,

she thought.

If only you knew what I'm hiding.

"You're good at this," she murmured.

"First time.

But I'll practice.

Every day if you want."

She smiled.

"I want."

He kissed her shoulder.

Continued brushing.

Long strokes.

Soothing.

Perfect.

"I love you," he said softly.

"So much."

I love you too,

she thought.

More than you'll ever know.

That's why I can't tell you.

"I love you too," she said aloud.

Silence.

Comfortable.

Sweet.

Then Jay felt it.

Warmth.

Dripping.

From her nose.

No.

Not now.

Please not now.

She touched her face.

Pulled her hand back.

Red.

Blood.

More than before.

Too much.

---

The Blood

Keifer saw it at the same time.

His hands froze.

The brush clattered to the floor.

"Jay?"

She stared at her hand.

At the blood.

Heart pounding.

Think fast.

Hide it.

Protect him.

"It's just a nosebleed.

I get them sometimes.

It's nothing."

But it kept coming.

More than usual.

Too much.

More than any other time.

Keifer grabbed tissues.

Pressed them to her nose.

Tilted her head forward.

"Keep pressure.

It'll stop.

It'll stop."

His voice was calm.

But his eyes.

His eyes were terrified.

Jay pressed the tissues.

Closed her eyes.

Prayed.

Stop.

Please stop.

He can't know.

He can't.

The blood didn't stop.

---

The Panic

Keifer pulled the tissues away.

Looked at them.

Red.

Soaked.

Too much.

"Jay.

We're going to the hospital.

Now."

She shook her head.

"It's just a nosebleed.

I'm fine."

He cupped her face.

Made her look at him.

His storm-gray eyes were wild.

Frightened.

Determined.

"This is not fine.

This is not normal.

We're going.

Now."

She saw his fear.

Felt her own rising.

Knew she couldn't fight him.

Not on this.

This is it,

she thought.

This is when he finds out.

"Okay.

Okay."

He grabbed clothes.

Helped her dress.

Hands shaking.

Face pale.

They ran downstairs.

Past a surprised Mamma.

Past Keiran asking questions.

Past everyone.

Keifer shouted over his shoulder.

"Hospital.

Nosebleed.

Won't stop."

And they were gone.

---

The Car

Keifer drove too fast.

Jay held tissues to her nose.

Blood still coming.

Still flowing.

She looked at him.

His knuckles white on the steering wheel.

His jaw tight.

His eyes fixed on the road.

I should have told him,

she thought.

I should have told him months ago.

Now he'll find out like this.

Now he'll hurt.

"Keifer.

Breathe."

He shook his head.

"I can't.

Not until you're okay."

I'm not okay,

she wanted to say.

I haven't been okay for months.

I'm dying.

"I will be okay.

It's just a nosebleed."

The lie tasted bitter on her tongue.

He looked at her.

Quick.

Terrified.

"You don't know that.

We don't know that.

Something's wrong.

I can feel it."

You're right,

she thought.

Something is very wrong.

And I'm so sorry I didn't tell you.

She reached for his hand.

Squeezed.

Bloody tissues and all.

"I'm here.

I'm not going anywhere.

Whatever it is, we face it together."

He squeezed back.

Tried to breathe.

Failed.

"Together," he whispered.

"Always together."

Together,

she thought.

But not because I was brave enough to tell you.

Because fate forced my hand.

---

The Hospital

Emergency room.

Bright lights.

Sterile smell.

Hurrying feet.

Keifer held her hand.

Refused to let go.

Even when they tried to take her back.

"I'm coming with her.

She's my—

I'm coming."

The nurse looked at him.

Saw his face.

Nodded.

"This way."

They walked together.

Past curtains.

Past machines.

Past other people's emergencies.

A small room.

A bed.

Machines waiting.

Jay sat on the bed.

Keifer beside her.

Still holding her hand.

Still terrified.

Doctors came.

Questions.

Lights in her eyes.

Blood drawn.

More questions.

Through it all, Keifer stayed.

Holding her hand.

Watching everything.

Saying nothing.

Jay answered the questions.

Yes, she'd been tired.

Yes, she bruised easily.

Yes, night sweats.

Yes, for months.

Keifer's hand tightened with each answer.

His face grew paler.

His eyes darker.

He's figuring it out,

she thought.

He's putting the pieces together.

---

The Wait

Hours passed.

Or minutes.

Time had no meaning.

Jay was tired.

So tired.

The bleeding had finally stopped.

But something else had started.

Something worse.

Keifer hadn't moved.

Hadn't spoken.

Just held her hand.

Watched the door.

Waited.

I should tell him before the doctor does,

she thought.

I owe him that.

I owe him the truth from my own lips.

"Keifer."

She squeezed his hand.

"Keifer, look at me."

He turned.

Those storm-gray eyes were red.

Scared.

Lost.

"I'm scared, Jay.

I'm so scared."

She cupped his face.

Made him look at her.

"I need to tell you something.

Something I should have told you months ago."

He frowned.

Confused.

"Tell me what?"

She took a breath.

The words were there.

Right there.

I have cancer.

I've known for months.

I'm so sorry I didn't tell you.

But before she could speak, the door opened.

---

The Doctor

A woman in a white coat.

Kind eyes.

Serious face.

A folder in her hands.

Keifer stood immediately.

Jay's heart stopped.

Too late,

she thought.

Now he'll hear it from a stranger.

The doctor looked at them.

At their joined hands.

At their terrified faces.

"Jasper Mariano?"

Jay nodded.

"That's me."

The doctor sat.

Pulled up a chair.

Took a breath.

"The tests came back.

The nosebleed is not the only symptom, is it?

You've been tired.

Bruising easily.

Fevers at night.

For months."

It wasn't a question.

She knew.

The records from the clinic.

They must have transferred them.

Jay's blood ran cold.

"Yes.

For months."

Keifer's head whipped toward her.

"Months?

You've had symptoms for months?

Why didn't you say anything?"

She couldn't meet his eyes.

Couldn't face the hurt.

The betrayal.

The doctor continued.

"Jay.

We found something.

In your blood work.

And we have records from Dr. Reyes's clinic.

From three months ago."

Keifer's hand went limp.

"Three months?

You've known for three months?"

Jay's eyes filled with tears.

"Keifer, I can explain—

The doctor opened the folder.

Looked at the papers.

Looked back at them.

"It's leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Dr. Reyes diagnosed you three months ago.

But you never started treatment.

Why?"

---

The Confession

The room spun.

Keifer stared at her.

His face a mixture of shock.

Betrayal.

Fear.

Love.

"You knew?

You've known for three months?

And you didn't tell me?"

Jay's tears fell.

Couldn't stop them.

"I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry."

He stepped back.

Let go of her hand.

First time in hours.

First time since this started.

"You let me fall in love with you.

You let me plan a future.

You let me believe—

And you knew?

You knew you were sick and you didn't tell me?"

His voice broke.

Cracked.

Shattered.

"I did it to protect you."

Jay's voice was small.

Broken.

"Keifer, you were just starting to live again.

You were just opening up.

I couldn't—

I didn't want to burden you with—

"BURDEN ME?"

His voice rose.

Echoed off the walls.

"YOU THINK YOU'RE A BURDEN?

Jay, you're everything.

You're my everything.

And you've been fighting alone for three months?"

He collapsed back into the chair.

Head in his hands.

Shoulders shaking.

Jay reached for him.

"Keifer, please—

He looked up.

Those storm-gray eyes wet.

Broken.

Loving.

"I'm not angry, Jay.

I'm hurt.

I'm so hurt that you didn't trust me.

That you thought you had to carry this alone."

She cried.

Couldn't stop.

"I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry.

I was scared.

I was so scared."

---

The Truth Comes Out

The doctor waited.

Gave them space.

Then gently continued.

"Jay.

We need to talk about next steps.

The cancer has progressed.

These three months without treatment—

It's made things more complicated."

Keifer straightened.

Took her hand again.

Wouldn't let go this time.

Ever.

"What does that mean?"

His voice was rough.

But steady.

"Tell us everything."

The doctor explained.

The progression.

The new treatment plan.

The urgency.

The fight ahead.

Jay listened.

Numb.

Scared.

But not alone anymore.

Keifer asked questions.

Took notes.

Planned.

Fought for her.

Through it all, he held her hand.

Didn't let go.

Not once.

Not ever.

---

After the Doctor

When the doctor finally left, silence fell.

Jay and Keifer sat together.

Hands intertwined.

Hearts broken.

Love still there.

"Keifer?"

She whispered.

"Say something.

Please."

He was quiet for a long moment.

Then he turned to her.

Those storm-gray eyes red.

But soft.

Loving.

"I'm not going anywhere, Jay.

I should be angry.

Maybe I am.

But mostly I'm just—

I'm just so sad that you were alone.

That you thought you had to be alone."

She cried.

"I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry."

He pulled her close.

Held her tight.

"Stop apologizing.

Just—

Just promise me something."

"Anything."

"No more secrets.

No more carrying things alone.

We're a team.

Remember?

Together."

She nodded against his chest.

"Together.

I promise.

No more secrets."

He kissed her hair.

"Good.

Because I'm not losing you, Jay.

We're going to fight this.

Together.

Every step."

She looked up at him.

At this man who should be angry.

Who should leave.

Who should protect himself.

Instead, he held her.

Loved her.

Fought for her.

"I love you," she whispered.

"So much.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you.

I love you."

He kissed her forehead.

Her nose.

Her lips.

Soft.

Gentle.

Full of forever.

"I love you too, Jasper Jean Mariano.

Forever.

No matter what."

---

The Family

They called Mamma.

Keifer told her this time.

Voice steady.

Hand holding Jay's.

"Mamma.

It's cancer.

Leukemia.

Jay's known for three months.

She didn't tell anyone.

But we know now.

We start treatment immediately."

Mamma's gasp.

Then silence.

Then:

"We're coming.

All of us.

We're coming now."

Within an hour, the waiting room filled.

Mamma first.

Running.

Tears streaming.

Pulling Jay into her arms.

"My brave, foolish girl.

You thought you had to do this alone?

You're family.

We fight together."

Then Pappa.

Quiet.

Strong.

Squeezing Jay's shoulder.

"You're not alone anymore.

Never again."

Then Aries.

Holding her.

Crying.

"You stupid, brave, idiot sister.

I love you."

Then Percy.

Wild-eyed.

Hysterical.

"You kept this from us?

For three months?

Jay, I could kill you.

But first I'm going to help you fight."

Then Keigan.

Quiet.

Serious.

"Kuya Jay.

Volcanoes erupt.

But they also rebuild.

You'll rebuild."

Then Keiran.

Confused.

Scared.

But brave.

"Kuya Jay?

Mamma said you're sick.

But Kuya Kai is here.

And Rex is here.

You'll be okay, right?"

Jay knelt.

Held him close.

"I'll be okay, Keiran.

Because I have all of you."

---

The Night

Visiting hours ended.

But no one left.

Mamma made calls.

Arranged everything.

Pappa handled logistics.

Aries and Percy hovered.

Keigan sat quietly, reading nearby.

Keiran fell asleep in a chair, Rex clutched in his hand.

And Keifer.

Keifer never moved from her side.

Held her hand.

Watched her.

Loved her.

The room was quiet now.

Just the two of them.

Machines beeping softly.

City lights outside.

Jay looked at him.

Those storm-gray eyes so tired.

So scared.

So full of love.

"I'm sorry," she whispered again.

"For lying.

For hiding.

For making you hurt."

He shook his head.

"Stop apologizing.

I understand why you did it.

I don't like it.

But I understand."

She smiled.

Small.

Tired.

"I love you."

He kissed her forehead.

"I love you too.

Now rest.

Tomorrow we fight."

She closed her eyes.

Safe in his arms.

Not alone anymore.

Never alone again.

---

The Promise

In the darkness, Keifer spoke.

"Jay?

I need you to hear something."

She opened her eyes.

Looked at him.

"I'm not going to pretend I'm not scared.

I'm terrified.

But I'm more determined.

You're going to beat this.

Because you're the strongest person I know."

She smiled.

"Stronger than you?"

He laughed.

Quiet.

"Yeah.

Stronger than me."

She kissed him.

Soft.

Sweet.

"I love you, Mark Keifer Watson."

He kissed her back.

"I love you too, Jasper Jean Mariano.

Forever.

No matter what."

She pressed closer.

"You should be angry.

You should leave.

Protect yourself."

He held her tighter.

"Never.

I'm exactly where I belong.

Right here.

With you."

She cried.

Happy tears.

Grateful tears.

"I don't deserve you."

He wiped her tears.

"Yes, you do.

You deserve everything.

And I'm going to spend the rest of my life making sure you have it."

She smiled.

"Rest of my life.

I like the sound of that."

He kissed her nose.

"Get used to it.

It's going to be a long one."

She closed her eyes.

Sleep pulling her under.

But smiling.

Always smiling now.

Because she wasn't alone.

Not anymore.

Not ever.

---

Morning

Sunlight streamed through the windows.

A new day.

A new battle.

But not alone.

Keifer woke first.

Watched her sleep.

Thanked God she was still here.

Still fighting.

Still his.

She opened her eyes.

Found him watching.

Smiled.

"Staring again?"

"Always.

You're worth staring at."

She laughed.

Weak.

But real.

"I love you."

"I love you too.

Ready to fight?"

She squeezed his hand.

"With you?

Always."

The door opened.

Mamma with coffee.

Keiran with Rex.

Everyone with love.

Jay looked around.

At her family.

At her love.

At her life.

Scared?

Yes.

Terrified?

Sometimes.

But alone?

Never.

Not anymore.

Not ever.

She had them.

All of them.

And she would fight.

For them.

For him.

For herself.

The battle started today.

But she wasn't facing it alone.

Never alone.

Always together.

Forever.
