Chapter 23 - the light

Chapter 21: The Light

Morning of the Ninth Day

Jay woke to sunshine and hope.

The room felt different today.

Lighter.

Warmer.

Less like a prison.

She stretched carefully.

Assessed her body.

The pain was still there.

The nausea too.

But something had shifted.

Something felt... easier.

Beside her, Keifer stirred.

Opened those storm-gray eyes.

Smiled immediately when he saw her awake.

"Morning, fiancée."

She smiled back.

"Morning, fiancé."

He kissed her forehead.

"How do you feel?"

She considered.

Honest.

"Different.

Better, I think.

Lighter."

He sat up.

Hope flickering in his eyes.

"Really?

You feel better?"

She nodded slowly.

"I think so.

Not perfect.

But better."

He kissed her.

Soft.

Sweet.

Grateful.

---

The Doctor's Visit

Mid-morning, Dr. Chen arrived.

Different from the other doctors.

Younger.

Softer.

Kind eyes.

She reviewed Jay's chart.

Checked her vitals.

Read the monitors.

Nodded slowly.

Jay held Keifer's hand.

Bracing for bad news.

For more struggle.

For harder days.

But Dr. Chen smiled.

Small.

Genuine.

"Jay.

I have good news.

The chemotherapy is working."

Jay's breath caught.

"What?"

Dr. Chen pointed at the charts.

"Your cell counts are improving.

The cancer is responding to treatment.

You're in the early stages of remission."

Keifer's hand tightened.

"Remission?

She's in remission?"

"Early stages.

But yes.

The treatment is working.

Your body is fighting back."

Jay stared at the doctor.

Tears flooding her eyes.

"I'm getting better?

Really?"

Dr. Chen nodded.

"Really.

You have a long road ahead.

More treatments.

More recovery.

But the trajectory is positive.

You're winning, Jay."

---

The Tears

Jay broke down.

Couldn't help it.

Weeks of fear.

Weeks of pain.

Weeks of fighting.

All worth it.

All leading to this moment.

Keifer held her.

Cried with her.

Laughed with her.

"She's winning.

She's actually winning."

Dr. Chen smiled.

"She is.

Keep fighting, Jay.

You're doing amazing."

She left.

Giving them space.

Giving them joy.

Jay looked at Keifer.

At the tears on his face.

At the love in his eyes.

"We did it," she whispered.

"We're doing it."

He kissed her.

Deep.

Grateful.

Overwhelmed.

"You did it.

You fought.

You never gave up."

She shook her head.

"We.

We did it together.

I couldn't have done this without you."

He held her close.

"Together.

Always together."

---

Calling the Family

Keifer grabbed his phone.

Hands shaking.

Tears still falling.

"Mamma?

Come to the hospital.

Now.

Bring everyone.

Good news.

Really good news."

Within thirty minutes, the room filled.

Mamma first.

Running.

Terrified and hopeful.

"What happened?

Is she okay?

What did the doctor say?"

Jay held up her hand.

Smiled through tears.

"The chemo is working, Mamma.

I'm in early remission.

I'm getting better."

Mamma froze.

Stared.

Then screamed.

"REMISSION!

SHE'S IN REMISSION!

PAPPA, DID YOU HEAR?

REMISSION!"

Pappa grabbed Keifer.

Hugged him hard.

Tears in his eyes.

"Your girl did it, son.

She fought and she won."

Keifer nodded.

Crying openly.

"I know, Pappa.

I know."

---

The Chaos of Joy

Keiran burst through the crowd.

Climbed onto the bed.

Hugged Jay carefully but fiercely.

"KUYA JAY!

You're better!

Rex said you would be!

Rex is always right!"

Jay kissed his forehead.

"Rex is the best doctor.

Better than all of them."

Keigan stood by the bed.

Calm.

But his eyes were wet.

"I knew it.

Volcanoes always rebuild.

I told you."

Jay reached for his hand.

"You did, Koya.

You were right."

Percy whooped.

Danced around the room.

"MY SISTER BEAT CANCER!

MY SISTER IS A WARRIOR!

CELEBRATION TONIGHT!"

Aries grabbed him.

Held him still.

Laughing through tears.

"Calm down, Perce.

She's still recovering.

But yeah.

She beat it."

Aries looked at Jay.

Love pouring from his eyes.

"My brave little sister.

I'm so proud of you."

Jay held out her arms.

He hugged her.

Carefully.

Gently.

Lovingly.

---

Mamma's Tears

When the chaos settled, Mamma sat beside Jay.

Took her face in her hands.

Looked at her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

"My daughter.

My brave, beautiful daughter.

You did it.

You fought and you won."

Jay cried.

"I couldn't have done it without you, Mamma.

Without this family.

Without all of you."

Mamma shook her head.

"You did the fighting, baby.

We just cheered from the sidelines."

Jay hugged her.

Held tight.

"I love you, Mamma.

So much."

Mamma held her back.

"I love you too, my daughter.

Forever."

---

Pappa's Pride

Pappa waited until the tears subsided.

Then he stood at the foot of the bed.

Looked at Jay with pride shining in his eyes.

"Jay.

I've known many brave people in my life.

Soldiers.

Leaders.

Heroes."

He paused.

Swallowed.

"But I've never known anyone braver than you.

What you've done these past weeks—

Fighting through pain.

Through fear.

Through everything—

It's extraordinary."

Jay's tears flowed.

"Pappa—

He held up a hand.

"I'm proud of you.

So proud.

You're not just my daughter-in-law to be.

You're my daughter.

My hero."

Jay reached for him.

He came to her.

Hugged her gently.

Strongly.

Lovingly.

"Thank you, Pappa.

For everything.

For being my father."

He kissed her forehead.

"Always, Jay.

Always."

---

The Engagement Celebration

Percy suddenly gasped.

"Wait!

Jay's in remission!

She's getting better!

That means we can plan the WEDDING!"

Everyone laughed.

The tension breaking.

Joy flooding in.

Mamma clapped her hands.

"He's right!

We have a wedding to plan!

Jay, what do you want?

When?

Where?

How?"

Jay looked at Keifer.

He shrugged.

Smiled.

"Whatever you want, love.

I just want you."

She thought.

Looked around at her family.

At the people who'd carried her through hell.

"Soon," she said.

"As soon as I'm well enough.

And here.

With all of you.

That's all I need."

Mamma nodded.

"Then soon it is.

We'll start planning immediately."

Keiran raised his hand.

"I want to be the ring bearer!

I can carry rings!

I'm good at carrying things!"

Keigan sighed.

"You dropped my book yesterday."

Keiran waved a hand.

"Details."

Everyone laughed.

Joy filled the room.

Hope filled their hearts.

---

Afternoon Rest

The family finally left.

Promising to return tomorrow.

Already planning the wedding.

Already celebrating.

Jay lay back against her pillows.

Exhausted but happy.

Tired but hopeful.

Keifer sat beside her.

Held her hand.

Kissed her knuckles.

"How do you feel?

Really?"

She smiled at him.

"Like I just fought a war and survived."

He nodded.

"That's exactly what happened."

She looked at the ring on her finger.

At the man beside her.

At the life they were building.

"I'm going to be okay, Keifer.

Really okay.

For the first time in months, I believe that."

He kissed her forehead.

"Me too, love.

Me too."

She closed her eyes.

Sleep pulling her under.

But smiling.

Always smiling now.

---

Evening

Jay woke to sunset.

Golden light painting the room.

Keifer still beside her.

Still holding her hand.

"Hey," she whispered.

He smiled.

"Hey yourself.

Good nap?"

She nodded.

"The best.

Dreamed of our wedding."

His eyes lit up.

"Yeah?

What happened?"

She grinned.

"Keiran tried to eat the rings.

Keigan had to tackle him.

Percy gave a speech that went on for an hour.

Aries cried.

Mamma planned everything.

Pappa gave me away."

Keifer laughed.

"Sounds perfect."

She squeezed his hand.

"It was.

Because you were there.

At the end of the aisle.

Waiting for me."

He kissed her.

Soft.

Sweet.

Full of forever.

"Always waiting for you, Jay.

Always."

---

The Promise

They lay together as night fell.

City lights glowing outside.

Machines beeping softly.

Hope filling the room.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah, love?"

"I'm glad I didn't give up.

Those dark days—

When I wanted to quit—

I'm glad I didn't."

He held her tighter.

"Me too, love.

Me too."

She looked at him.

Those storm-gray eyes so full of love.

"You saved me, you know.

Not just with the ring.

Not just with the love.

With your presence.

Your faith.

Your never leaving."

He shook his head.

"You saved yourself, Jay.

I just held your hand while you did it."

She smiled.

"Then thank you for holding my hand.

Through all of it."

He kissed her hair.

"Always.

Forever.

No matter what."

She closed her eyes.

Safe.

Loved.

Healing.

Tomorrow was another day.

Another step toward recovery.

Another step toward their future.

But tonight?

Tonight she rested.

Victorious.

Loved.

Engaged.

Alive.
