Chapter 24 - miracle

Chapter 22: The Miracle

One Month Later

The hospital room felt different now.

Not a prison anymore.

More like a way station.

A place between sickness and health.

Between fear and hope.

Jay sat by the window.

Sunlight warming her face.

A small smile on her lips.

Her hair was gone now.

Completely.

She'd shaved it when the last clumps fell out.

Easier that way.

Less painful.

But she was alive.

More than alive.

She was healing.

Keifer walked in.

Coffee in hand.

Stopped at the sight of her by the window.

Bathed in light.

Beautiful.

"Hey, beautiful."

She turned.

Smiled that smile he loved.

"Hey yourself."

He crossed to her.

Kissed her forehead.

Her bald head.

Something he did a hundred times a day now.

Making sure she knew.

She was beautiful.

Always beautiful.

"How do you feel today?" he asked.

She considered.

Honest.

"Good.

Really good.

Stronger every day."

He sat beside her.

Took her hand.

"Then today's the day."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Today's what day?"

He grinned.

Mysterious.

"You'll see."

---

The Doctor's Visit

Dr. Chen arrived mid-morning.

A file in her hands.

A smile on her face.

Jay's heart raced.

Every test brought fear.

Every result brought hope or dread.

But Dr. Chen's smile was different today.

Wider.

Brighter.

More.

"Jay.

I have your results."

Keifer grabbed her hand.

Squeezed tight.

Dr. Chen opened the file.

Read for a moment.

Then looked up.

"The cancer is gone.

Complete remission.

You're cancer-free."

---

The Silence

The words hung in the air.

Impossible.

Miraculous.

True.

Jay stared at the doctor.

Couldn't speak.

Couldn't move.

Couldn't breathe.

Beside her, Keifer made a sound.

Half laugh.

Half sob.

Full joy.

"Gone?

Completely gone?"

Dr. Chen nodded.

"Completely.

The treatments worked.

Your body fought back.

You won, Jay."

Jay burst into tears.

Not sad tears.

Not scared tears.

Joy tears.

Relief tears.

Miracle tears.

She was free.

After months of hell.

After weeks of poison.

After days of wanting to give up.

She was free.

---

Keifer's Breakdown

Keifer pulled her into his arms.

Held her so tight.

Shaking.

Crying.

Laughing.

"You did it.

You did it, Jay.

You beat it.

You're okay."

She clung to him.

Cried into his chest.

"You stayed.

You never left.

I couldn't have done it without you."

He pulled back.

Cupped her face.

Those storm-gray eyes streaming tears.

"I love you, Jasper Jean Mariano.

I love you so much."

She kissed him.

Deep.

Grateful.

Overwhelming.

"I love you too, Mark Keifer Watson.

Forever."

Dr. Chen smiled.

Quietly left.

Giving them their moment.

Their miracle.

---

Calling the Family

Keifer grabbed his phone.

Hands shaking.

Voice breaking.

"Mamma?

Come to the hospital.

Now.

Bring everyone.

It's—

It's over.

The cancer is gone.

She's free."

Mamma's scream of joy echoed through the phone.

Then sounds of chaos.

Running.

Crying.

Laughing.

Within thirty minutes, the room exploded.

Mamma first.

Running.

Screaming.

Tackling Jay with a hug.

"MY BABY!

MY MIRACLE BABY!

YOU DID IT!

YOU BEAT IT!"

Jay laughed and cried.

Held her mother.

Her Mamma.

Pappa next.

Hugging Keifer.

Hugging Jay.

Tears on his face.

"Welcome back to life, Jay.

Welcome back."

---

The Chaos of Joy

Keiran burst through the crowd.

Rex in hand.

Launching himself onto the bed.

"KUYA JAY!

You're better!

For real better!

No more cancer!

Rex said you would be!

Rex is the best!"

Jay kissed his forehead.

"Rex IS the best.

And so are you."

Keigan stood by the bed.

Calm.

But his eyes were wet.

"I knew it.

Volcanoes always rebuild.

You're rebuilt now."

Jay pulled him into a hug.

"My little scientist.

My little hope-giver."

Percy danced into the room.

Literally danced.

Spinning.

Whooping.

Celebrating.

"MY SISTER BEAT CANCER!

MY SISTER IS A SUPERHERO!

PARTY AT MY PLACE!

EVERYONE INVITED!"

Aries grabbed him.

Held him still.

Laughing through tears.

"Calm down, you idiot.

Let her breathe."

Then Aries looked at Jay.

Love pouring from his eyes.

"My brave little sister.

I'm so proud of you."

Jay held out her arms.

He hugged her.

Carefully.

Gently.

Forever.

---

The Tears of Joy

When the chaos settled, they gathered around her.

All of them.

Her family.

Her miracle.

Mamma held her hand.

"We need to celebrate.

A party.

A huge party.

You deserve it all."

Jay laughed.

"I just want to go home.

To our room.

To our bed.

To normal life."

Keifer kissed her head.

"Soon, love.

Soon."

Keiran climbed into her lap.

"Kuya Jay?

Now that you're better...

Can we have that dinosaur adventure?

You promised."

Jay hugged him.

"We absolutely can, little monster.

As soon as I'm strong enough.

We'll go on the best dinosaur adventure ever."

He beamed.

"BEST DAY EVER!"

Keigan nodded.

"I'll research the best dinosaur museums.

For science."

Percy snorted.

"For fun, Keigan.

Sometimes things are just for fun."

Keigan considered.

"I'll research for fun then.

For science AND fun."

Everyone laughed.

Joy filling the room.

Hope overflowing.

---

The Walk

That evening, Keifer helped Jay walk.

First time out of the room in weeks.

Slow steps.

Holding onto him.

But walking.

They went to the hospital garden.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Full of flowers.

Jay breathed deep.

Fresh air.

Real air.

Freedom air.

"I forgot what this felt like," she whispered.

"The outside.

The world.

Life."

Keifer held her close.

"You're back in it now, love.

For real.

Forever."

She looked up at him.

Those storm-gray eyes so full of love.

"I couldn't have done it without you.

Any of it.

The dark days.

The pain.

The wanting to quit.

You kept me going."

He shook his head.

"You kept yourself going.

I just held your hand."

She smiled.

"Then thank you for holding my hand.

Through all of it."

He kissed her.

Soft.

Sweet.

Grateful.

"Always, love.

Always."

---

The Ring

They sat on a bench.

Watching the sunset.

Jay's ring catching the light.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah, love?"

"Now that I'm better...

We can really plan the wedding?"

He laughed.

"We can really plan the wedding.

What do you want?

Big?

Small?

Beach?

Mountains?

Castle?"

She thought.

Looked at him.

"The garden.

At the mansion.

With everyone there.

Just family.

Just love."

He nodded.

"Perfect.

Absolutely perfect."

She leaned against him.

"Soon?"

"As soon as you're strong enough."

"I'm strong enough now."

He kissed her forehead.

"Then soon.

Very soon."

---

Going Home

Two days later, Jay was discharged.

The family came in full force.

Mamma with a going-home outfit.

Pappa with the car.

Keiran with Rex.

Keigan with a welcome home sign.

Percy with party poppers.

Aries with tears in his eyes.

Jay walked out of the hospital.

On her own two feet.

Holding Keifer's hand.

Free.

She looked back once.

At the building that had held her prisoner.

At the rooms that had seen her pain.

At the place where she'd fought and won.

"Goodbye," she whispered.

"I'm never coming back."

Keifer squeezed her hand.

"Never again, love.

Never."

---

The Mansion

Home.

Finally home.

The mansion welcomed her.

Lights on.

Warmth pouring out.

Love waiting inside.

Keiran ran ahead.

"KUYA JAY'S HOME!

EVERYONE!

SHE'S HOME!"

Mamma's voice from inside.

"We know, baby!

We've been waiting!"

Jay walked through the door.

Her door.

Her home.

Her family.

The living room was decorated.

Balloons.

Banners.

Flowers.

Love.

WELCOME HOME, JAY!

WE MISSED YOU!

WE LOVE YOU!

Jay cried.

Couldn't help it.

This family.

This love.

This life.

"You did all this?

For me?"

Mamma hugged her.

"Of course, darling.

You're our miracle.

You deserve everything."

---

The Tour

Keiran grabbed her hand.

"Come on, Kuya Jay!

I'll show you everything!

Rex helped decorate!

He picked the colors!"

She let him pull her through the house.

Balloons everywhere.

Flowers everywhere.

Love everywhere.

Her room—her and Keifer's room—was decorated too.

More balloons.

More flowers.

A banner: OUR HERO LIVES HERE.

Keigan stood by the door.

"I helped with the banner.

The grammar is correct."

Jay laughed.

Pulled him into a hug.

"It's perfect, Koya.

Everything is perfect."

Percy appeared with snacks.

"Welcome home feast!

Mamma cooked for days!

Eat up!

You need your strength!"

Aries rolled his eyes.

"For the wedding planning, he means.

Not for anything else."

Percy grinned.

"Wedding planning is exhausting.

She'll need energy."

---

Dinner

Dinner was chaos.

Beautiful chaos.

Perfect chaos.

Everyone talking at once.

Keiran telling long stories.

Keigan correcting facts.

Percy making jokes.

Aries keeping peace.

Mamma serving food.

Pappa laughing.

Jay and Keifer holding hands under the table.

Jay looked around.

At this family.

This love.

This life.

I almost lost this,

she thought.

I almost gave up.

But she didn't.

She fought.

She won.

And now?

Now she had forever.

Keifer leaned close.

"What are you thinking?"

She smiled at him.

"That I'm the luckiest person in the world."

He kissed her cheek.

"No.

We're the luckiest.

Together."

---

After Dinner

They sat on the back patio.

Stars overhead.

City lights in the distance.

Quiet at last.

Jay leaned against Keifer.

His arm around her.

Her head on his shoulder.

"Can you believe it?" she whispered.

"Months ago, I was dying.

Now I'm here.

With you.

With them.

Alive."

He kissed her hair.

"I can believe it.

I always believed.

Even in the darkest days.

I believed you'd make it."

She looked up at him.

Those storm-gray eyes so full of love.

"How?

How did you stay so strong?"

He smiled.

Soft.

Tender.

"Because of you.

Because loving you made me strong.

Because watching you fight made me brave."

She kissed him.

Slow.

Sweet.

Grateful.

"I love you, Mark Keifer Watson."

He kissed her back.

"I love you too, Jasper Jean Mariano.

Forever."

---

The Future

They sat together.

Watching the stars.

Planning their future.

"The wedding," she said.

"When?"

"Whenever you want."

"Next month?

As soon as I'm strong enough?"

He nodded.

"Next month.

Whatever you want."

She smiled.

"And then?

After the wedding?"

He held her tighter.

"Then we live.

Really live.

Travel.

Adventure.

Laugh.

Love."

She leaned into him.

"And kids?

Someday?"

He kissed her forehead.

"Someday.

When you're ready.

When we're ready.

Little ones running around.

Chaos everywhere."

She laughed.

"More chaos?

This family isn't chaotic enough?"

He grinned.

"Never enough chaos.

Never enough love."

She closed her eyes.

Safe.

Loved.

Healed.

Home.

---

Morning

Jay woke in their bed.

Their room.

Their home.

Sunlight streamed through the windows.

Keifer's arms were around her.

Warm.

Safe.

Perfect.

She stretched slowly.

Pressed closer to him.

Listened to his heartbeat.

Alive.

Free.

Hers.

He stirred.

Pulled her tighter.

Kissed her hair.

"Morning, miracle."

She smiled.

"Morning, love."

"How do you feel?"

She considered.

Honest.

"Perfect.

Absolutely perfect."

He opened his eyes.

Those storm-gray eyes soft.

Loving.

Hers.

"Good.

Because we have a whole life to live.

Starting today."

She kissed him.

Soft.

Sweet.

Full of forever.

"Then let's start."
