Chapter 22 - seventh day

Chapter 20: The Seventh Day

The Depths

Seven days of chemotherapy.

Seven days of poison flowing through her veins.

Seven days of fighting.

Seven days of slowly dying.

Jay barely recognized herself anymore.

Her hair had started falling out.

Thin at first.

Then clumps.

Now her pillow was covered every morning.

Her face was pale.

Gray almost.

Eyes sunken.

Cheeks hollow.

She'd lost weight.

Couldn't keep food down.

Could barely keep water down.

The nausea was constant.

The pain was constant.

The exhaustion was constant.

But she fought.

Every day.

For him.

For them.

For herself.

---

Morning of the Seventh Day

Jay woke to Keifer's face.

Close.

Watching her.

Those storm-gray eyes tired but loving.

"Hey," he whispered.

"Seventh day.

You made it to the seventh day."

She smiled.

Weak.

But real.

"Seven days.

Feel like seven years."

He kissed her forehead.

"I know, love.

I know.

But you're doing it.

You're fighting."

She reached up.

Touched his face.

Felt the stubble.

The tiredness.

The love.

"You look terrible," she whispered.

He laughed.

Quiet.

Sad.

"Thanks.

You look beautiful."

She snorted.

"Weak."

"Honest."

They lay there.

Just a moment.

Just them.

Then the nausea hit.

---

The Morning Ritual

Jay barely made it to the basin.

Keifer was there.

Always there.

Holding her hair.

Rubbing her back.

Whispering love.

"It's okay, love.

Let it out.

I've got you."

She hated this.

Hated being weak.

Hated him seeing her like this.

But he never wavered.

Never looked away.

Never made her feel like a burden.

When it passed, he helped her back to bed.

Brought water.

Brought medicine.

Brought love.

"Rest now.

You did good."

She looked at him.

Tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry.

You shouldn't have to do this."

He cupped her face.

Made her look at him.

"Jay.

Listen to me.

There is nowhere else I'd rather be.

No one else I'd rather be with.

You're my person.

In sickness and in health.

Remember?"

She cried.

Weak tears.

Grateful tears.

"I love you."

He kissed her forehead.

"I love you too.

Now rest.

I'll be right here."

---

Keiran's Visit

The door burst open.

Of course.

"KUYA JAY!

GOOD MORNING!

I BROUGH BREAKFAST!

WELL, MAMMA MADE IT.

I CARRIED IT.

ALMOST DROPPED IT.

BUT DIDN'T!"

Keiran ran to the bed.

Careful now.

He'd learned to be gentle.

To watch the tubes.

To not bump her.

He climbed up carefully.

Sat beside her.

Opened the container Mamma had sent.

"Look!

Toast!

Cut into triangles!

Triangles are the best shape!

Mamma said so!"

Jay smiled.

Weak.

But real.

"Triangles are the best.

She's right."

Keiran held up a piece.

"You have to eat.

Mamma said.

For strength.

For fighting."

Jay took the toast.

Small piece.

Ate slowly.

For him.

For them.

For herself.

Keiran watched.

Satisfied.

"Good.

Rex is proud of you."

He placed the dinosaur on her pillow.

Rex was always there now.

Permanently stationed.

Protecting her.

Jay kissed the dinosaur's head.

"Tell Rex thank you.

He's the best nurse."

Keiran nodded seriously.

"I know.

That's why he's here."

---

Keigan's Science

Keigan arrived next.

Book in hand.

Face serious.

"Kuya Jay.

I've been researching.

Chemotherapy side effects.

They're normal.

They mean it's working."

Jay reached for his hand.

"You're researching for me?"

He nodded.

"You're my sister.

I research everything.

Why not this?"

She laughed.

Weak.

But real.

"Of course.

My little scientist."

He sat beside her.

Opened his book.

"Today I'll read about how cells regenerate.

After chemo.

After fighting.

They come back stronger."

Jay listened.

Let his calm voice wash over her.

Let his love fill her.

Keigan read for an hour.

Facts and figures.

Hope and science.

Love and family.

---

Percy's Chaos

Percy arrived mid-morning.

Bouncing.

Restless.

Trying so hard to be positive.

"Okay, Jay.

I have a plan.

A brilliant plan.

The best plan."

Jay raised an eyebrow.

"Your plans usually end in disaster."

He clutched his heart.

"Ouch.

Hurt.

But fair.

But this plan is different."

She waited.

Amused despite everything.

"When you're better—

Not if.

When—

We're taking a trip.

All of us.

The whole crazy family.

Beach.

Mountains.

Wherever you want."

Jay's eyes filled with tears.

"A trip?"

"Yeah.

You, me, Aries, Keifer, Mamma, Pappa, the kids.

All of us.

Together.

Making memories.

Happy ones.

Not hospital ones."

Jay squeezed his hand.

"I'd like that, Perce.

I'd really like that."

He nodded.

Fierce.

"Then that's what we'll do.

You just focus on getting better.

I'll plan everything."

She smiled.

"Deal."

---

Aries's Quiet Love

Aries came later.

Sat quietly beside her.

Held her hand.

Said nothing.

They didn't need words.

Never had.

He just sat.

Being there.

Loving her.

Supporting her.

After a long while, he spoke.

"Remember when we were kids?

You fell off your bike.

Broke your arm.

Cried for hours."

Jay nodded.

"I remember.

You carried me home.

Three blocks.

You were twelve."

He smiled.

Small.

Nostalgic.

"I'd carry you now too.

If I could.

Take this pain from you."

She squeezed his hand.

"I know, Ari.

I know.

You've always carried me.

All my life."

He kissed her forehead.

"And I always will.

Through this.

Through everything.

Always."

---

Mamma's Strength

Mamma arrived with lunch.

Real food.

Home-cooked.

Made with love.

But Jay couldn't eat.

The nausea was too strong.

The pain too much.

Mamma didn't push.

Just held her hand.

Talked softly.

About nothing.

About everything.

"You're doing so well, baby.

Seven days.

Seven days of fighting.

I'm so proud of you."

Jay cried.

Weak tears.

"I don't feel like I'm doing well.

I feel like I'm dying."

Mamma held her closer.

"I know, darling.

I know.

But you're not dying.

You're fighting.

And every day you fight is a victory."

Jay looked at her.

This woman who'd become her mother.

Who loved her unconditionally.

Who never gave up.

"I love you, Mamma."

Mamma kissed her forehead.

"I love you too, my daughter.

Forever."

---

Pappa's Presence

Pappa came in the afternoon.

Stood at the foot of her bed.

Quiet.

Strong.

Solid.

"Jay.

I've been thinking."

She waited.

Respected this man so much.

"When you're better—

We're having a party.

A big one.

The whole family.

The whole city if you want.

Celebrating you."

Jay smiled.

Weak.

Touched.

"A party for me?"

Pappa nodded.

"You deserve it.

You deserve everything.

You're family.

You're ours.

And we celebrate family."

Jay reached for his hand.

He took it.

Squeezed gently.

"Thank you, Pappa.

For everything.

For accepting me.

For loving me.

For being my father."

His eyes glistened.

"Always, Jay.

Always."

---

The Evening Crash

By evening, Jay was exhausted.

The day's visits had drained her.

The pain was worse.

The nausea constant.

Keifer sent everyone home.

Took charge.

Protected her.

"She needs rest.

Come back tomorrow.

She'll still be here.

Fighting."

They left.

Reluctantly.

But understanding.

Mamma kissed Jay's forehead.

"Rest, baby.

We'll be back tomorrow."

Keiran placed Rex carefully on the pillow.

"Rex stays.

Protecting you.

Always."

Jay smiled weakly.

"Thank you, little monster.

Tell Rex I love him."

Keiran nodded.

"He knows."

---

The Dark Hours

Night fell.

The hospital grew quiet.

Just machines.

Just them.

Jay's pain spiked.

She couldn't hide it.

Couldn't fight it.

Keifer saw.

Hit the call button.

Held her hand.

Talked her through it.

"It's okay, love.

Help is coming.

You're okay.

I'm here."

Nurses came.

Medicine administered.

Pain slowly faded.

Jay lay back.

Exhausted.

Broken.

But alive.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah, love?"

"I don't know if I can do this.

Seven more days.

Seven more weeks.

It's too much."

He climbed onto the bed beside her.

Careful of tubes.

Careful of pain.

Held her close.

"Yes, you can.

You can do this.

One day at a time.

One hour at a time.

One minute at a time."

She cried against his chest.

"I'm so tired.

So tired of fighting."

He kissed her hair.

"I know, love.

I know.

But you're not fighting alone.

I'm right here.

Every minute.

Every hour.

Every day."

She looked up at him.

Those storm-gray eyes so full of love.

So full of strength.

"How do you do it?

How are you so strong?"

He smiled.

Soft.

Tender.

"Because of you.

Because loving you makes me strong.

Because watching you fight makes me brave."

She cried.

Held him.

Let his love fill her.

---

The Promise

In the darkness, Keifer spoke.

"Jay?

I need to tell you something."

She looked at him.

"Okay."

"I've been thinking.

About that porch.

About those grandkids.

About our future."

She waited.

Heart beating.

"And I realized something.

I don't want to wait.

I don't want to waste another minute."

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small box.

Jay's breath caught.

"Keifer—

He opened the box.

A ring.

Simple.

Elegant.

Perfect.

"Jasper Jean Mariano.

I know this isn't the right time.

I know you're in a hospital bed.

I know you're fighting for your life.

"But I also know that I don't want to spend another day without you being officially mine.

Without the world knowing that you're my person.

My partner.

My forever."

Tears streamed down her face.

"Keifer—

"Jay, will you marry me?

Not someday.

Now.

As soon as you're well enough.

Will you be my wife?

My family?

My forever?"

She looked at him.

At this man who'd held her through everything.

Who'd never left.

Who'd loved her without reservation.

"Yes," she whispered.

"Yes, Keifer.

Yes."

He slipped the ring on her finger.

Perfect fit.

Like it was meant to be.

They kissed.

Soft.

Sweet.

Full of forever.

"I love you, Jasper Jean Mariano.

My fiancée.

My future wife."

She smiled.

Tears of joy.

"I love you too, Mark Keifer Watson.

My fiancé.

My future husband."

---

Morning of the Eighth Day

Sunlight streamed through the windows.

Jay woke with the ring on her finger.

Keifer asleep beside her.

Peaceful.

She looked at the ring.

At him.

At her life.

Seven days of hell.

But this moment.

This love.

Worth every second.

Keifer stirred.

Opened his eyes.

Found her watching.

"Hey," he whispered.

"How do you feel?"

She smiled.

Brighter than she had in days.

"Engaged.

I feel engaged."

He laughed.

Kissed her nose.

"Good.

That's the best way to feel."

She held up her hand.

Watched the ring catch the light.

"It's beautiful, Keifer.

When did you—

"Weeks ago.

Before the diagnosis.

I knew.

I always knew."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You always knew?"

He nodded.

"From the moment you walked into my office.

You were the one.

I just had to wait for you to realize it too."

She kissed him.

Deep.

Slow.

Grateful.

"I love you."

"I love you too.

Now.

Ready for day eight?"

She looked at the ring.

At him.

At the future they'd promised each other.

"With you?

Always."

---

The Family Finds Out

The door burst open.

Keiran first.

As always.

"KUYA JAY!

GOOD MORNING!

I BROUGHT—

WHAT'S THAT?"

He pointed at her hand.

At the ring.

Eyes wide.

Keifer grinned.

"That, little monster, is an engagement ring.

Kuya Jay said yes.

We're getting married."

Keiran's jaw dropped.

Then he screamed.

"MAMMA!

PAPPA!

EVERYONE!

KUYA JAY AND KUYA KAI ARE GETTING MARRIED!"

Chaos erupted.

Mamma ran in.

Pappa behind her.

Aries.

Percy.

Keigan.

All of them.

Mamma grabbed Jay's hand.

Stared at the ring.

Tears flowing.

"My baby.

My daughter.

Engaged.

Oh, this is the best day."

Pappa hugged Keifer.

"Congratulations, son.

She's the best thing that ever happened to you."

Keifer nodded.

"I know, Pappa.

I know."

Percy whooped.

"MY SISTER IS ENGAGED TO MY BEST FRIEND!

THIS IS AMAZING!

I'M THROWING THE BACHELOR PARTY!"

Aries rolled his eyes.

"You're not throwing anything.

We'll plan together.

Calmly."

Percy waved him off.

"Details, details."

Keigan nodded approvingly.

"Good.

Marriage is scientifically proven to increase happiness and longevity.

You'll both benefit."

Keiran climbed on the bed.

Hugged Jay carefully.

"Does this mean you're really my sister now?

For real?

Forever?"

Jay hugged him back.

"For real, Keiran.

Forever."

He beamed.

"BEST DAY EVER!"

---

The Celebration

The room filled with joy.

With laughter.

With love.

Mamma was already planning the wedding.

"Small and intimate?

Big and grand?

What do you want, darling?"

Jay looked at Keifer.

He smiled.

"Whatever you want, love.

I just want you."

She thought.

Looked around at her family.

Her crazy, beautiful, loving family.

"Everyone.

I want everyone.

The whole family.

All the chaos.

All the love."

Mamma nodded.

"Then that's what you'll get.

The biggest, most beautiful wedding.

For our biggest, most beautiful love story."

They celebrated all morning.

Forgot the hospital.

Forgot the cancer.

Just family.

Just love.

Just joy.

---

Afternoon

The joy faded slightly as reality returned.

Jay was still sick.

Still fighting.

Still in a hospital bed.

But the ring on her finger reminded her.

There was a future.

A reason to fight.

A reason to live.

Keifer never left her side.

Held her hand.

Admired the ring on her finger.

Smiled.

"I can't believe you said yes."

She laughed.

Weak but happy.

"I can't believe you asked in a hospital bed."

He shrugged.

"Romantic enough?"

She kissed him.

"Perfect.

Absolutely perfect."

---

Evening

The family left.

One by one.

Promising to return tomorrow.

Already planning the wedding.

Jay and Keifer lay together in the small bed.

Her ring catching the fading light.

His arms around her.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah, love?"

"Thank you.

For asking.

For loving me.

For never leaving."

He kissed her hair.

"Thank you for saying yes.

For fighting.

For staying."

She smiled.

Pressed closer.

"Eight days down.

Many more to go."

He held her tighter.

"Together.

Always together."

She closed her eyes.

Tired.

Sick.

But happy.

Engaged.

Loved.

Fighting.

Tomorrow was day eight.

But tonight?

Tonight she was Keifer's fiancée.

And that was everything.
