Chapter 21 - fourth day

Chapter 19: The Fourth Day

Morning Darkness

Jay woke to pain.

Not the dull ache she'd grown used to.

Sharp pain.

Burning pain.

Everywhere pain.

She gasped.

Tried to move.

Couldn't.

Keifer was instantly awake.

"Jay?

Jay, what's wrong?"

She couldn't speak.

Could only gasp.

Clutch her stomach.

Her head.

Her chest.

He hit the call button.

Screamed for help.

Held her hand.

Terrified.

Nurses flooded in.

Doctors followed.

Hands reaching.

Machines beeping.

Voices calling.

Keifer was pushed aside.

Forced to watch.

Again.

Always watching.

Never able to help.

---

The Crisis

Minutes passed like hours.

Jay's cries faded to whimpers.

Then silence.

Keifer couldn't see her.

Too many people.

Too many machines.

Too much fear.

"Please," he begged.

"Please, someone tell me what's happening."

A nurse turned.

Face gentle but urgent.

"She's having a reaction to the chemo.

Her body is fighting back.

We're stabilizing her."

Keifer's legs gave out.

He slid down the wall.

Sat on the floor.

Head in his hands.

Please,

he prayed.

Please don't take her.

Not now.

Not when we're fighting.

---

The Wait

Mamma arrived first.

Someone had called her.

Of course.

She found Keifer on the floor.

Sat beside him.

Pulled him into her arms.

"She's going to be okay, baby.

She's strong.

She's a fighter."

He clung to her.

Cried like a child.

"I can't lose her, Mamma.

I can't.

She's everything."

Mamma held him.

Rocked him.

"Shh.

I know, baby.

I know."

Pappa arrived next.

Took in the scene.

Sat on Keifer's other side.

A wall of strength.

Aries and Percy burst through the doors.

Wild-eyed.

Terrified.

"Where's Jay?

What happened?

Is she okay?"

Mamma held up a hand.

"They're working on her.

Reaction to the chemo.

We have to wait."

Percy started pacing.

Aries stood frozen.

Both terrified.

Both helpless.

Keigan and Keiran arrived with Mamma's driver.

Keigan's face pale but controlled.

Keiran confused but brave.

"Where's Kuya Jay?"

Keiran's small voice.

"Why is everyone sad?"

Keigan pulled him close.

"She's with the doctors, Keiran.

They're helping her.

We have to wait."

Keiran nodded.

Clutched Rex tighter.

"Rex will protect her.

He's the best."

---

The Doctor Appears

An hour.

Two.

Time had no meaning.

Finally, the door opened.

The lead doctor emerged.

Face tired but relieved.

"Family of Jasper Mariano?"

Everyone stood.

Surged forward.

Keifer reached her first.

"How is she?

Is she okay?

What happened?"

The doctor held up a hand.

"She's stable.

It was a severe reaction to the chemotherapy.

Her body is fighting the treatment as much as the cancer."

Keifer's heart clenched.

"What does that mean?

For her?

For the treatment?"

The doctor's face softened.

"It means we need to adjust.

Change the approach.

But she's strong.

She came through it."

Keifer's legs almost gave out again.

Pappa caught him.

Held him steady.

"Can we see her?" Keifer asked.

"Please.

I need to see her."

The doctor nodded.

"One at a time.

She's weak.

But she's asking for you."

---

Seeing Jay

Keifer walked into the room alone.

Hands shaking.

Heart pounding.

Jay was pale.

So pale.

Tubes everywhere.

Machines beeping.

But her eyes were open.

Finding him immediately.

"Keifer?"

He crossed to her in seconds.

Took her hand.

Kissed it.

Pressed it to his cheek.

"I'm here.

I'm right here.

You scared me.

Don't ever do that again."

She smiled.

Weak.

Tired.

But real.

"Sorry.

Didn't plan it."

He laughed.

Cried.

Kissed her forehead.

Her cheeks.

Her lips.

"I love you.

I love you so much."

She squeezed his hand.

"I love you too.

Thank you for staying."

He shook his head.

"Always.

Where else would I be?"

She looked at him.

Those storm-gray eyes red.

Tired.

Loving.

"I thought I was dying.

For a minute there.

I really thought—

He kissed her again.

Stopped the words.

"You're not dying.

You're fighting.

And you're winning.

I won't accept anything else."

She smiled.

Closed her eyes.

"I'm tired.

So tired."

He kissed her forehead.

"Then rest.

I'll be right here.

Always."

She slept.

He stayed.

Always.

---

The Family Visits

One by one, they came in.

Mamma first.

Kissing her forehead.

Whispering prayers.

Tears falling silently.

"You scared us, baby.

Don't do that again."

Jay squeezed her hand.

"Sorry, Mamma.

I'll try."

Pappa next.

Squeezing her shoulder.

Nodding once.

"Strong girl.

Keep fighting."

Aries held her hand.

Shaking.

"I can't do this without you, Jay.

You know that, right?

You're my whole world."

Jay smiled at him.

"You're my whole world too, Ari.

Always."

Percy kissed her cheek.

"Stop being dramatic, okay?

Just get better.

I need someone to argue with."

Jay laughed.

Weak.

But real.

"Wouldn't want you to get lonely."

Keigan stood by the bed.

Serious as always.

"Kuya Jay.

Volcanoes have eruptions.

But they always rebuild.

You're rebuilding.

It's okay to rest."

Jay reached for his hand.

"Thank you, Koya.

You're the smartest person I know."

Keiran climbed up carefully.

Rex in hand.

Placed the dinosaur on her pillow.

"Rex says you had a big scare.

But you're okay now.

Because you're brave.

The bravest."

Jay kissed his forehead.

"Tell Rex thank you.

I couldn't do this without him."

Keiran nodded.

"I know.

That's why he's here.

Always."

---

The Afternoon

Jay slept most of the day.

Her body exhausted from the crisis.

Her spirit tired from fighting.

Keifer never left.

Held her hand.

Watched her breathe.

Loved her silently.

The family came and went.

Bringing food.

Bringing love.

Bringing presence.

Mamma forced Keifer to eat.

To drink.

To rest his eyes for a few minutes.

He obeyed.

But never left the room.

Never went far.

Always within reach.

Percy sat with him for a while.

Quiet for once.

Just being there.

"She's going to make it, you know."

Percy's voice was soft.

Sure.

"She's too stubborn not to."

Keifer nodded.

"I know.

But watching her suffer—

It's killing me."

Percy put a hand on his shoulder.

"Welcome to loving a Mariano.

We're hard to love.

But worth it."

Keifer laughed.

Quiet.

Sad.

"Yeah.

Worth it."

---

Evening

Jay woke as the sun set.

Golden light streaming through the blinds.

Painting the room in warm colors.

She turned her head.

Found Keifer in the chair.

Watching her.

Always watching.

"Hey," she whispered.

He leaned close.

Kissed her forehead.

"Hey yourself.

How do you feel?"

She assessed.

Tired.

Sore.

But better than morning.

Much better.

"Alive.

Thanks to you.

Thanks to everyone."

He smiled.

Small.

Relieved.

"Good.

That's all that matters."

She looked around.

"Where is everyone?"

"Waiting room.

Giving us space.

They've been here all day."

She squeezed his hand.

"You've been here all day."

He kissed her knuckles.

"Where else would I be?"

She smiled.

Tears in her eyes.

"I don't deserve you."

He shook his head.

"No.

I don't deserve you.

But here we are.

Lucky us."

She laughed.

Weak.

Happy.

"Lucky us."

---

The Conversation

They lay together in the small bed.

Keifer curled around her.

Careful of tubes.

Careful of pain.

Just holding.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm scared.

Really scared.

Today was—

I thought I was dying."

He held her tighter.

"I know, love.

I know.

I was scared too.

Terrified."

She turned in his arms.

Faced him.

Those storm-gray eyes so close.

"But I'm still here.

Still fighting.

Because of you.

Because of them.

Because of love."

He kissed her nose.

"That's right.

Love is saving you.

All of us loving you."

She smiled.

"You really believe that?"

"I really do.

Love is the strongest thing in the world.

Stronger than cancer.

Stronger than fear.

Stronger than anything."

She pressed closer.

"Then love me harder.

Love me through this."

He kissed her.

Soft.

Sweet.

Full of forever.

"Always.

Forever.

No matter what."

---

Night Falls

The family returned one last time.

Goodnight kisses.

Promises to return tomorrow.

Love filling the room.

Keiran placed Rex on her nightstand.

"Rex stays here tonight.

In case you need him."

Jay kissed his forehead.

"Thank you, little monster.

I'll take good care of him."

Keigan nodded seriously.

"Read the volcano book if you can't sleep.

It helps."

Percy squeezed her hand.

"Fight hard, Jay.

We're all behind you."

Aries kissed her forehead.

"I love you, little sister.

Never forget that."

Mamma hugged her gently.

"Tomorrow is a new day.

New strength.

New fight."

Pappa kissed her cheek.

"Proud of you, Jay.

So proud."

And Keifer.

Keifer climbed into bed beside her.

Curled around her.

Held her close.

"Ready for tomorrow?" he whispered.

She nodded against his chest.

"With you?

Always."

He kissed her hair.

"Then let's rest.

Tomorrow we fight again."

She closed her eyes.

Safe.

Loved.

Not alone.

Tomorrow would come.

With new battles.

New fears.

New pain.

But also new love.

New strength.

New hope.

And she would face it all.

With him.

With them.

With love.

Always with love.
