Chapter 18: The Second Day
Morning Light
Jay woke to the smell of coffee.
Not hospital coffee.
Real coffee.
Mamma's coffee.
She opened her eyes slowly.
Her body ached.
Her mouth was dry.
Her stomach churned gently.
But she was alive.
Still here.
Still fighting.
Keifer was in the chair beside her.
Asleep.
Hand still holding hers.
Face peaceful despite everything.
She smiled.
Loved him so much.
Then she saw Mamma.
Sitting in the corner.
Cup of coffee in hand.
Watching them both with soft eyes.
"Morning, darling," Mamma whispered.
"Didn't want to wake you.
You both needed rest."
Jay squeezed Keifer's hand.
He stirred.
Mumbled.
Opened those storm-gray eyes.
"Jay?"
His voice rough with sleep.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
"I'm okay.
Mamma's here."
He sat up slowly.
Rubbed his face.
Looked at his mother.
"Mamma?
What time is it?
How long have you been here?"
Mamma smiled.
"Few hours.
Brought coffee.
And breakfast.
And love."
---
Breakfast Battle
Mamma unpacked containers.
Real food.
Home-cooked.
Made with love.
But Jay's stomach rebelled at the sight.
The smell.
The thought of eating.
She turned away.
"I can't.
I'm sorry, Mamma.
I just can't."
Mamma's face softened.
"The nausea from chemo?
I know, baby.
But you need to eat.
Just a little.
For strength."
Keifer knelt beside the bed.
Took her hand.
"Just try.
One bite.
For me."
Jay looked at him.
Those storm-gray eyes pleading.
Loving.
Hopeful.
She couldn't refuse him.
Never could.
"Okay.
One bite."
Mamma brought a small piece of toast.
Plain.
Simple.
Easy.
Jay took it.
Brought it to her lips.
Chewed slowly.
Swallowed with effort.
Her stomach lurched.
But settled.
Stayed.
"Good girl," Mamma whispered.
"One more?
Just one?"
Jay took another bite.
Then another.
Small.
Slow.
Fighting.
Keifer never left her side.
Held her hand.
Praised each bite.
Loved her through it.
---
Keiran Arrives
The door burst open.
Of course.
"KUYA JAY!
KUYA KAI!
GOOD MORNING!
I BROUGHT REX!
HE MISSED YOU!"
Keiran ran to the bed.
Rex in hand.
Climbed up carefully.
Placed the dinosaur on her pillow.
Jay kissed his forehead.
"Rex is the best visitor.
Almost as good as you."
Keiran beamed.
"I know!
We're a team!
Rex and me!
Protecting you!"
Keigan appeared behind him.
Calm.
Quiet.
Book in hand.
"Morning, Kuya Jay.
I brought more volcano facts.
For inspiration."
Jay smiled.
"Read to me later?
I'd love that."
Keigan nodded.
Serious.
"Yes.
After breakfast.
You need to eat first."
Percy and Aries arrived together.
Arguing as always.
"I told you we should have come earlier."
"We're here now, Perce. Relax."
"Relax? Our sister has cancer. I don't relax."
They stopped at the bed.
Took in Jay's pale face.
Her weak smile.
Her fighting eyes.
Percy grabbed her hand.
"How are you?
Really?
Don't lie."
Jay squeezed back.
"Tired.
Sick.
Scared.
But fighting."
Aries kissed her forehead.
"That's our girl.
Keep fighting.
We're right here."
---
Pappa's Visit
Pappa appeared last.
As always.
Quiet.
Strong.
Solid.
He stood at the foot of the bed.
Looked at her.
Those gray eyes so like Keifer's.
"Jay.
I've arranged everything.
Work is handled.
Bills are handled.
Whatever you need.
Just focus on fighting."
Jay's eyes filled with tears.
"Pappa...
Thank you.
I don't know what to say."
He walked to her.
Took her hand.
"You say nothing.
You just fight.
That's all we ask."
She nodded.
Cried.
Loved this man.
This family.
This life.
---
The Morning Routine
Nurses came and went.
Vitals checked.
Medications administered.
Questions asked.
Jay answered them all.
Tired but polite.
Weak but present.
Keifer never left.
Asked his own questions.
Took notes.
Advocated for her.
Mamma organized everything.
Food.
Visitors.
Schedule.
Love.
The brothers took turns.
Sitting with her.
Talking to her.
Just being there.
Keigan read volcano facts.
Percy told terrible jokes.
Aries held her hand in comfortable silence.
Keiran showed her dinosaur drawings.
And through it all, Jay fought.
Smiled when she could.
Laughed when possible.
Loved without reservation.
---
The Afternoon Crash
But the chemo was strong.
The cancer was aggressive.
Her body was tired.
By afternoon, she crashed.
The energy drained from her.
Her eyes grew heavy.
Her words slowed.
Her grip weakened.
Keifer noticed immediately.
"Jay?
Jay, stay with me."
She tried.
Fought to keep her eyes open.
Failed.
"Just... just rest," she mumbled.
"Just for a minute."
He held her hand.
Kissed it.
"Okay, love.
Rest.
I'll be right here."
She slept.
Deep.
Exhausted.
Healing sleep.
---
The Vigil
The room grew quiet.
Visitors stepped out.
Gave her space.
Gave Keifer space.
But he didn't move.
Didn't leave.
Just sat there.
Holding her hand.
Watching her breathe.
Mamma found him like that.
Hours later.
Still there.
Still watching.
"Keifer.
You need to eat.
Move.
Rest."
He shook his head.
"I can't leave her.
What if she wakes up?
What if she needs me?"
Mamma sat beside him.
Took his other hand.
"She's sleeping, baby.
She'll sleep for hours.
You need to take care of yourself too.
She'll need you strong."
He looked at Jay.
Pale.
Peaceful.
Fighting.
"Okay.
Just for a few minutes."
Mamma smiled.
"Good boy.
I'll stay with her.
Go.
Eat.
Breathe."
He kissed Jay's forehead.
Whispered, "I'll be right back, love."
And left.
---
The Hallway
Percy was in the hallway.
Leaning against the wall.
Staring at nothing.
Keifer sat beside him.
They didn't speak for a long moment.
Then Percy spoke.
"She's really sick, isn't she?
Like, really really sick."
Keifer nodded.
"Yeah.
She is."
Percy's voice broke.
"I can't lose her, man.
She's my baby sister.
I raised her.
I changed her diapers.
I taught her to ride a bike.
I can't—
Keifer put a hand on his shoulder.
"She's not going anywhere.
She's a fighter.
And she has all of us."
Percy wiped his eyes.
"Promise?
Promise she'll be okay?"
Keifer looked at him.
Honest.
"So help me God, Percy.
I'll move heaven and earth to save her.
Whatever it takes."
Percy nodded.
Swallowed.
"Okay.
Okay.
Then let's do this.
Together."
They sat there.
Two brothers.
Not by blood.
But by love.
Fighting for the same woman.
---
Evening Return
Keifer returned to the room.
Jay was still asleep.
Mamma in the chair now.
Watching over her.
"She woke once," Mamma whispered.
"Asked for you.
I told her you'd be right back.
She smiled and went back to sleep."
Keifer's heart clenched.
"Did she eat?
Drink anything?"
"A few sips of water.
That's all.
The nausea is bad today."
Keifer nodded.
Sat in his chair.
Took Jay's hand.
Resumed his vigil.
Mamma kissed his cheek.
"I'll be in the waiting room.
Call if you need anything."
She left.
Quiet.
Loving.
Always there.
---
Jay Wakes
Hours later, Jay stirred.
Eyes fluttered open.
Found Keifer immediately.
"Hey," she whispered.
Voice rough.
Weak.
He leaned close.
Kissed her forehead.
"Hey yourself.
Welcome back."
She smiled.
Small.
Tired.
"How long?"
"Few hours.
You needed rest."
She looked around.
"Everyone else?"
"Waiting room.
Giving us space.
They'll be back."
She nodded.
Squeezed his hand.
"You stayed."
He kissed her knuckles.
"Always.
Told you."
She was quiet for a moment.
Then:
"I dreamed about you."
"Yeah?
What happened?"
She smiled.
Soft.
Far away.
"We were old.
Really old.
Sitting on a porch somewhere.
Watching grandkids play."
His eyes filled with tears.
"Grandkids, huh?"
"Mmhmm.
Yours and mine.
Beautiful.
Chaotic.
Perfect."
He kissed her hand again.
"Then we'd better make sure that happens.
You need to fight for that future."
She looked at him.
Those storm-gray eyes so full of love.
"I am fighting.
Every day.
For you.
For us.
For that porch."
He cried then.
Couldn't help it.
Tears of love.
Tears of fear.
Tears of hope.
"I love you, Jasper Jean Mariano.
So much."
She cupped his face.
Wiped his tears.
"I love you too, Mark Keifer Watson.
Forever."
---
Family Dinner in a Hospital Room
The family returned.
Brought food.
Brought laughter.
Brought life.
They gathered around her bed.
A strange picnic.
Hospital room style.
Keiran sat on the bed.
Careful not to bump tubes.
Eating chicken nuggets.
Telling long stories about nothing.
Keigan read aloud from his volcano book.
Facts and figures.
Inspiration for fighting.
Percy told jokes.
Bad ones.
Made everyone groan.
Made Jay laugh.
Aries kept the peace.
Refilled water.
Adjusted pillows.
Loved quietly.
Mamma served food.
Made sure everyone ate.
Made sure Jay tried.
Pappa sat in the corner.
Watching his family.
Smiling softly.
And Keifer.
Keifer never let go of her hand.
Not once.
Not for a second.
Jay looked around.
At this chaos.
This love.
This family.
This is worth fighting for,
she thought.
All of this.
All of them.
---
The Question
After dinner, the room quieted.
Keiran fell asleep on the extra bed.
Keigan read quietly.
Percy and Aries talked in low voices.
Mamma and Pappa sat together.
Jay looked at Keifer.
"Can we talk?
Just us?"
He nodded.
Squeezed her hand.
"Of course."
She took a breath.
"Keifer...
If things don't—
If I don't—
He shook his head.
"Don't.
Don't say it."
She pressed on.
"But if I don't make it—
I need you to know—
You changed my life.
You and this family.
I was nothing before.
Just a girl with no future.
No hope."
He was crying now.
Silent tears.
Holding her hand so tight.
"And then you came.
You saw me.
Really saw me.
You loved me.
You gave me a home.
A family.
A reason to fight."
She squeezed his hand.
"So if I don't make it—
Don't be sad forever.
Live.
Love again.
Be happy.
For me."
He shook his head.
Fierce.
Determined.
"There is no love again.
There's only you.
Only ever you."
She smiled.
Tears falling.
"Keifer—
He kissed her.
Soft.
Sweet.
Full of forever.
"No more of that talk.
You're going to make it.
We're going to have that porch.
Those grandkids.
That future.
I won't accept anything else."
She laughed.
Cried.
Held him.
"Okay.
Okay.
I'll fight.
For that future."
He pressed his forehead to hers.
"That's my girl.
That's my Jay."
---
Night
The family left.
One by one.
Promising to return tomorrow.
Keifer stayed.
Of course.
Curled beside her in the small bed.
Holding her close.
Machines beeped softly.
City lights glowed outside.
They lay together.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
Fighting.
"Keifer?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you.
For today.
For every day.
For everything."
He kissed her hair.
"Thank you for fighting.
For staying.
For loving me."
She smiled against his chest.
"Always."
He held her tighter.
"Always."
