Chapter 34: The Last Day

The Morning of the Last Day

Jay woke to the sound of waves and the weight of knowing.

Today was their last day in paradise.

She lay still for a moment, listening to the ocean, feeling Keifer's warmth beside her. His arm was draped over her waist. His breathing was slow and steady. He was still asleep.

She turned her head. Looked at him. Those storm-gray eyes closed. His face relaxed. His lips slightly parted. Beautiful. Hers.

Fourteen days in the Maldives. Fourteen days of sun and sea. Fourteen days of just them. Fourteen days of healing and loving and learning each other in ways they never had before.

And now it was ending.

She traced his eyebrow with her fingertip. His cheekbone. His jaw. He stirred. Pulled her closer without opening his eyes.

"You're thinking too loud," he mumbled.

She smiled. "I'm not thinking anything."

"Liar." He opened one eye. "What is it?"

She hesitated. "Today's the last day."

He opened both eyes. Pulled her onto his chest. "I know."

She rested her head over his heart. Listened to it beat. Steady. Strong. Hers. "I don't want it to end."

He kissed her hair. "Then it doesn't have to."

She looked up. "We can't stay here forever, Keifer."

He smiled. "We can stay here today. That's what matters. Today. This moment. Us." He rolled them over. Hovered above her. Those storm-gray eyes soft in the morning light. "Let's not waste it thinking about tomorrow. Let's live today. All of it. Every second."

She wrapped her arms around his neck. "Okay. Today. Every second."

He kissed her. Deep. Slow. Thorough. The waves sang. The sun rose. The last day began.

---

Floating Breakfast

They ate breakfast on the water. A floating platform anchored just off their deck. Fresh fruit. Pastries. Smoked salmon. Champagne. Coffee. Everything beautiful.

Jay sat cross-legged on the cushion. Water lapping at her ankles. "I'm going to miss this the most. Breakfast on the water. Every morning. Watching the fish swim beneath us."

Keifer sat across from her. Poured her coffee. "Then we'll do it at home."

She laughed. "In the mansion pool?"

He shrugged. "Why not? I'll buy a floating platform. We'll have breakfast on the water every weekend."

She threw a grape at him. "You're ridiculous."

He caught it in his mouth. Grinned. "Ridiculously in love with you."

She smiled. Her heart full. Her chest aching with the sweetness of it. "I love you, Keifer Watson."

He reached across the platform. Took her hand. "I love you too, Jay Watson. Now. Eat. We have a day to live."

---

The Last Swim

They spent the morning in the water. Swimming. Floating. Snorkeling among the coral. Watching the fish dart through the reefs.

Jay found her sea turtle again. The same one from their first day. She knew it was the same. The way it moved. The way it circled them. The way it looked at her with ancient eyes.

She surfaced. Ripped off her mask. "Keifer! It's her! The same turtle!"

He surfaced beside her. "You recognize a sea turtle?"

She nodded fiercely. "It's her. She came back. To say goodbye."

He looked at her. At the turtle. Back at her. "You're crying."

She touched her face. Wet. Tears. Happy tears. Always happy tears now. "She came back, Keifer. She remembers us."

He pulled her close. Water lapping around them. Sun warming their faces. "Of course she remembers us. We're unforgettable."

She laughed through her tears. Kissed him. Salt on her lips. Sun on her skin. Sea turtle watching.

---

The Message

They found another bottle floating near the reef. Jay spotted it first. Her heart stopped.

"Keifer. Another one."

He swam to it. Retrieved it. Handed it to her. "Open it."

She pulled the cork. Slid out the scroll. Her hands shook.

Jay,

Today is the last day. But it's not the end. It's the beginning. Of everything. Of us. Of forever.

I loved you in the hospital. I love you now. I'll love you when we're old. When we're gray. When we're sitting on a porch somewhere, watching our grandchildren play.

This isn't goodbye to paradise. It's hello to the rest of our lives.

Forever yours,

Keifer

She read it twice. Three times. Four times. The tears streamed down her face. She looked at him. Her husband. Her love. Her forever.

"You wrote this. On our first day. Before you even knew I'd find it."

He took her hand. "I wrote it on our first night. When you were asleep. I wanted you to have it. On the last day. To remind you."

She kissed him. Deep. Slow. Full of everything. "I love you, Keifer Watson. I love you more than all the fish in this ocean. More than all the water in this sea. More than everything."

He kissed her back. "I love you too, Jay Watson. My wife. My forever."

---

The Island

They took the boat to their private island. The one with the spa. The one with the hammock. The one where they'd spent so many perfect hours.

But today, there was no spa. No massage tables. No therapists.

Just a table. Set for two. In the sand. Under the palm trees. Overlooking the water.

Jay stepped off the boat. Stared. "Keifer. What is this?"

He took her hand. "Our last lunch. In paradise. Just us. Just this."

They sat at the table. The water in front of them. The sun above them. The world quiet around them.

A waiter appeared. Poured champagne. Disappeared.

Jay raised her glass. "To our last day."

Keifer raised his. "To our first day. Of the rest of our lives."

They drank. The waves sang. The palm trees swayed. The world was perfect.

---

The Lunch

They ate slowly. Savoring every bite. Every flavor. Every moment.

Grilled fish. Fresh mango. Coconut rice. Chocolate for dessert. Everything perfect.

Jay looked out at the water. "I'm going to miss this. The colors. The sounds. The way the sun feels on my skin."

Keifer watched her. "What's your favorite color?"

She turned. "What?"

"Of the water. You said you'd miss the colors. Which one is your favorite?"

She looked back at the ocean. Considered. "The turquoise. The shallow parts. Where you can see the bottom. Where the sand is white and the water is clear and everything feels new."

He nodded. "Mine is the deep blue. Where you can't see the bottom. Where it's endless. Eternal. Like us."

She reached across the table. Took his hand. "The turquoise and the deep blue. Together. That's us."

He squeezed her hand. "That's us, Mrs. Watson. The shallows and the depths. The new and the eternal. Together."

---

The Walk

They walked the beach one last time. Hand in hand. Feet in the water. The sun warm on their shoulders.

Jay collected shells. One last time. White ones. Pink ones. Tiny ones. Perfect ones. She'd add them to her collection. The ones she'd already found. The ones that would go in their room. Their home. Their forever.

Keifer watched her. "You're going to need a bigger shell collection."

She looked at him. "I'm going to need a bigger everything. More shells. More memories. More days with you."

He pulled her close. "You have all the days, Jay. All of them. Every single one. For the rest of our lives."

She leaned into him. "I know. That's what makes leaving easier. Knowing I'm taking you with me."

He kissed her forehead. "And you're taking me. Wherever you go. Whatever comes next. I'm there."

She smiled. "Promise?"

"Promise."

---

The Hammock

They lay in the hammock one last time. Strung between the palm trees. Swaying gently. The ocean in front of them. The sky above them.

Jay curled against Keifer's chest. Her head over his heart. His arms around her. Their legs tangled together.

"I'm going to miss this hammock," she murmured. "The way it rocks. The way the breeze feels. The way the world disappears when we're in it."

He kissed her hair. "Then we'll get a hammock. For the mansion. We'll put it in the garden. Under the big tree. We'll lie in it every afternoon. Watch the clouds. Listen to Keiran's dinosaur stories. Smell Mamma's cooking."

She smiled. "And Keigan will read to us. Science facts. Volcano updates. Wedding statistics."

"And Percy will try to climb in. And break it."

She laughed. "And Aries will fix it. While complaining. While secretly loving it."

"And Pappa will watch from his chair. Pretending to read his newspaper. Smiling behind it."

She looked up at him. "And Mamma will bring us lemonade. And tell us we're too old for hammocks. And then she'll climb in with us."

He kissed her nose. "That's our life, Mrs. Watson. Chaos and hammocks and lemonade."

She smiled. "Best life, Mr. Watson. Best life."

---

The Sunset

They watched their last sunset from the hammock. The sky was on fire. Oranges and pinks and purples. The water reflected them back. The world was gold.

Jay watched it fade. Memorized every color. Every cloud. Every moment.

"I don't want to forget this," she whispered. "Any of it. The way the sun looks when it hits the water. The way the air smells. The way you look when you're watching it."

He held her tighter. "You won't forget. It's part of you now. Part of us. We carry it with us. Everywhere we go."

She turned in his arms. Faced him. Those storm-gray eyes soft in the fading light. "I love you, Keifer Watson. I loved you before this place. I love you now. I'll love you after. Always."

He cupped her face. "I love you too, Jay Watson. I loved you when you were sick. I love you now, healthy and whole. I'll love you forever. No matter what."

The sun sank below the horizon. The stars came out. The world was quiet.

They kissed. Soft. Sweet. Full of forever.

---

The Last Dinner

They ate their last dinner on the deck. Candlelight. Fresh lobster. Grilled vegetables. Champagne. The stars overhead. The waves below.

Jay looked at Keifer across the table. Her husband. Her love. Her forever.

"Fourteen days," she said. "Fourteen days of paradise. Fourteen days of just us. I didn't know I needed it. But I did. I needed every second."

He raised his glass. "To fourteen days. To the rest of our lives. To us."

She raised hers. "To us. To forever."

They drank. The stars watched. The waves sang. The world was perfect.

---

The Last Night

Later, they lay in bed. The glass floor beneath them showed the dark water. Moonlight streaming through. Fish glowing faintly.

Jay's shells were arranged on the nightstand. Her flower crown from day four hung on the bedpost. The messages in bottles sat beside her collection. Treasures from paradise. Treasures from her husband.

Keifer traced patterns on her shoulder. "Fourteen days. The end of our honeymoon."

She looked up at him. "The beginning of everything else."

He smiled. "What comes first? When we get home?"

She thought. "Mamma. She'll be waiting. With food. With tears. With love."

He nodded. "Keiran will attack you. Rex in hand. He'll tell you about all the dinosaurs he discovered while we were gone."

She laughed. "Keigan will have research. New facts. New theories. He'll present them at dinner."

"Percy will have planned something. A welcome home party. Something ridiculous. Something perfect."

She smiled. "Aries will pretend to be annoyed. But he'll be the one who missed us most."

He kissed her forehead. "And Pappa. Pappa will be in his chair. Newspaper up. Smiling behind it."

She snuggled closer. "And us. We'll be home. Together. Starting our forever."

He held her close. "Our forever, Mrs. Watson. Starting tomorrow. Continuing always."

She closed her eyes. The waves sang. The stars watched. The villa held them safe.

Mr. and Mrs. Watson. The end of their honeymoon. The beginning of everything else.

---

The Promise

In the darkness, Keifer spoke.

"Jay?"

"Yeah?"

"When we get home. When we're back in the mansion. When real life starts again. I want you to remember something."

She opened her eyes. Looked at him. "What?"

He kissed her forehead. "Remember this. Remember the water. Remember the sunsets. Remember the way you felt when you found that message in a bottle. Remember that this is real. That we're real. That forever is possible."

She reached up. Touched his face. "I remember everything, Keifer. Every moment. Every second. Every breath. It's all part of me now. Part of us."

He covered her hand with his. "Promise me. Promise me you'll never forget. Even when life gets hard. Even when we're busy. Even when the world tries to pull us apart."

She sat up. Looked at him. Those storm-gray eyes. Her home. Her heart. Her forever.

"I promise, Keifer. I promise I'll remember. I promise I'll hold onto this. Onto us. Onto forever."

He kissed her. Deep. Slow. Full of everything.

"Forever, Mrs. Watson. Forever."

---

The Morning

Jay woke to sunlight and the sound of waves.

The last morning.

She lay still for a moment. Memorizing the feeling. The warmth of the sun. The cool of the breeze. The weight of Keifer's arm around her waist.

He was awake. Watching her.

"Staring again?" she murmured.

"Always. You're worth staring at."

She turned in his arms. Faced him. Those storm-gray eyes soft in the morning light.

"Last day," she whispered.

He kissed her forehead. "Last day. But not the end."

She smiled. "Not the end. The beginning."

He pulled her close. "The beginning, Mrs. Watson. Of everything."

She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Full of forever.

"I love you, Keifer Watson."

He kissed her back. "I love you too, Jay Watson. Forever."

They lay together. The waves sang. The sun rose. The last day began.

But it wasn't an ending. It was a beginning.

The beginning of their forever. The beginning of everything.

---

The Departure

The seaplane waited on the water. The boat took them to it. Their bags packed. Their shells collected. Their hearts full.

Jay stood at the edge of the dock. Looked back at their villa. At the turquoise water. At the palm trees. At paradise.

Keifer stood behind her. Arms around her waist. "Ready?"

She leaned back against him. "No. But ready anyway."

He kissed her ear. "That's my girl. That's my wife. That's my forever."

She turned in his arms. Faced him. Those storm-gray eyes. Her home. Her heart. Her everything.

"Take me home, Mr. Watson."

He smiled. Took her hand. "Home, Mrs. Watson. Together."

They walked to the seaplane. Hand in hand. Hearts full. Forever beginning.

The Maldives faded behind them. Turquoise water. White sand. Palm trees. Paradise.

But they carried it with them. In their memories. In their hearts. In the shells on Jay's nightstand. In the messages in bottles. In the love they'd found. In the forever they'd built.

The honeymoon was over. Their life together was just beginning.

And it was going to be beautiful.
