Chapter 16: The Reaper's Gambit
The battle was over. The members of Eisenwald lay scattered and defeated, tied up with a combination of Gray's ice shackles and Virgo's chains. The immediate threat was neutralized, but the real danger was still speeding down the tracks.
Erza knelt in front of Kageyama, her expression a mask of cold, urgent intensity. "Erigor. Where was he going?"
Kageyama, having witnessed the complete and utter defeat of his guild and the incredible teamwork of the fairies, was a broken man. The last vestiges of his loyalty to Eisenwald had crumbled away.
"Clover..." he whispered, his voice hoarse. "He's going to the town of Clover. The guild masters' conference is being held at the station there."
"The station itself?" Gray asked, confused. "Why not the conference hall?"
"The station has a broadcast system," Kageyama explained, his eyes wide with fear. "A magical loudspeaker that can transmit sound throughout the entire town. He's not just targeting the masters... he's going to broadcast Lullaby's song to everyone in Clover."
The horrifying scale of Erigor's plan slammed into us. This wasn't just an assassination; it was mass murder.
"He's going to kill everyone in town?!" Lucy cried out, her hands flying to her mouth.
"We have to stop him!" Gray yelled, looking at the chasm. "But how? The bridge is out, and he's got too much of a head start!"
Erza's gaze swept across the canyon and locked onto the magic four-wheeler, sitting abandoned on the other side. "There's our ride. But getting to it will take time we don't have."
No, it won't, I thought. This was a problem of logistics and time, and I could solve both.
Without a word, I floated out over the chasm. The team watched, confused for a second, before a collective gasp went through them. A brilliant pink aura of telekinetic energy flared to life around me, visible even in the bright daylight. I extended a paw, and across the canyon, the entire multi-ton magic four-wheeler shuddered. It lifted a few inches off the ground, then smoothly floated into the air.
I guided the vehicle across the fifty-foot gap as if it were a child's toy. The team stared in stunned silence as their only hope of catching Erigor drifted effortlessly through the air and settled onto the tracks beside them with a gentle thump.
"Whoa..." was all Gray could manage to say.
Lucy just stared at me, her eyes sparkling with awe. "Mew... you're amazing!"
We are a team, I sent back to her, the thought filled with a sense of shared purpose. And we are not letting him get away.
The moment of awe was shattered by Natsu. He took one look at the four-wheeler and his face immediately turned a sickly green. "No way! I'm not getting on that thing! I'll run! It'll be faster!"
Erza didn't even waste time arguing. There was a quiet thwack as her hand chopped the back of Natsu's neck. His eyes rolled back into his head, and he collapsed in a heap.
"Gray, load him in," she commanded, her voice all business.
As Gray started dragging the unconscious Natsu towards the vehicle, Erza grabbed Kageyama by the front of his shirt, hauling him to his feet.
"You're coming with us," she stated.
"Why?!" Kageyama yelped, terrified. "I told you everything!"
"Your Shadow Magic is useless to me," Erza said, her eyes narrowing. "But you also have Dispel magic. If we can't defeat Erigor in time, you might be the only one who can break the seal on the Lullaby flute itself. You are our insurance policy."
It was a brilliant, cold, and calculated move. She wasn't just thinking about the fight; she was thinking about the objective.
We all piled into the four-wheeler. Gray took the driver's seat, Erza sat beside him, and Lucy and I were in the back with the unconscious Natsu and our terrified prisoner.
"Get us to Clover. Fast," Erza ordered.
Gray floored the accelerator. The vehicle shot forward, racing down the tracks. The team was back together, fully equipped, and thanks to a bit of psychic intervention, back in the race. Now, we just had to hope we weren't too late.
