Chapter 17: The Calm Before the Storm
The magic four-wheeler rocketed down the tracks, the wind whipping past us. In the driver's seat, Gray was a mask of pure concentration, his knuckles white as he pushed the vehicle to its absolute limit. Beside him, Erza stared straight ahead, her mind clearly already at the destination, running through strategies and contingencies.
In the back, the atmosphere was a strange mix of tension and quiet awe. Natsu remained slumped in the corner, completely out cold. Kageyama sat rigidly, flinching at every bump, a man caught between two worlds and belonging to neither.
Lucy, however, kept glancing from the unconscious Natsu to me. She reached out a hesitant hand and gently stroked the top of my head.
"I still can't believe what you did back there, Mew," she whispered, her voice full of wonder. "Lifting that whole thing... You're just... incredible."
A bright, genuine smile bloomed on her face. The fear was still there, but beneath it, a new confidence was taking root. She wasn't just a tag-along anymore; she was a vital part of a team that could perform miracles. She had tunneled under a canyon, and her strange, floating cat friend had lifted a vehicle through the air. In Fairy Tail, the impossible was just another Tuesday.
After what felt like an eternity, Gray shouted, "I see it! That's Clover up ahead!"
We sped into the outskirts of the town. The scene was unnervingly peaceful. People milled about the streets, shopping, talking, and laughing. Children played in a park. The sun shone brightly. None of them had any idea that a melody of death was poised to sweep through their idyllic town. The contrast made the knot of dread in my stomach tighten.
Gray brought the vehicle to a screeching halt near the central station. As we piled out, a familiar blue blur shot down from the sky.
"Everyone!" Happy cried, landing on Lucy's head. "I saw him! Erigor went right into the station!"
"Is he at the broadcast booth?" Erza demanded.
"I don't know!" Happy said, panicked. "The whole station is blocked! I couldn't get in!"
He was right. A massive, swirling dome of violent wind surrounded the entire station building, far more powerful and concentrated than the wall at the previous station. It was a perfect, impenetrable cage, sealing Erigor inside and everyone else out.
"A Wind Wall..." Gray muttered, placing a hand on the barrier. He was immediately thrown back. "It's even stronger than Kageyama's. There's no way we can break this with brute force."
"So Erigor's trapped himself in there to play the flute," Erza deduced, her expression grim. "He's going to broadcast it, and we can't get to him."
The team stood, momentarily stumped. They had come all this way, only to be stopped by another wall.
But Erza's gaze was sharp. She hadn't been stumped; she had been confirming the problem. Now, she turned to the solution. Her eyes locked onto Kageyama, who flinched under the weight of her stare.
"We can't break it," she said, her voice low and dangerous. "But you can."
Everyone turned to look at their prisoner.
"Me?" Kageyama squeaked.
"That barrier is a magical seal," Erza stated, her logic cold and precise. "And you are a master of Dispel magic. You are the only one who can open a path for us. You are our key."
Kageyama stared at the violent, swirling dome of wind. He looked at the determined faces of the Fairy Tail wizards. He was no longer just a prisoner. He was the single point upon which the fate of an entire town now rested. His moment of redemption, or his final act of cowardice, had arrived.
