Chapter 38 - The Truth He Carried

Chap

Outside, the air felt heavier than before.

Like even the wind had slowed down—

Waiting.

Listening.

Emily crossed her arms.

Not out of anger.

But to hold herself together.

"Say what you came to say," she said.

Her voice was calm.

But not soft.

Arjun nodded.

He didn't rush.

Didn't look away.

"I know you hate me," he began.

Emily let out a quiet, almost bitter breath.

"I don't hate you."

A pause.

"I just stopped expecting anything from you."

That hit harder than anger ever could.

Arjun accepted it.

Nodded slowly.

"Fair."

Silence stretched between them.

Then he said—

"I didn't leave because I wanted to."

Emily's expression didn't change.

"Then why did you leave?"

Arjun looked down briefly.

As if choosing how much truth to reveal.

"Because I thought it was the only way to protect you."

Emily let out a small, disbelieving laugh.

"Protect me? By disappearing?"

Arjun met her eyes again.

"Yes."

She shook her head.

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It didn't… then," he admitted.

"But it does now."

Emily's patience was thinning.

"Stop speaking in half-truths, Arjun."

He took a breath.

Then finally said—

"I was in debt."

The words landed quietly.

But their impact—

Immediate.

Emily frowned.

"What kind of debt?"

Arjun hesitated.

Then said—

"The kind that doesn't wait. The kind that doesn't forgive."

Emily's chest tightened.

"They came to me," he continued.

"Not just for money… but with threats."

Her voice dropped.

"…What kind of threats?"

Arjun didn't look away.

"The kind that involved you."

Silence.

The world around them seemed to pause.

Emily felt her heartbeat in her ears.

"You're lying," she said.

But her voice wasn't fully certain.

"I wish I was," Arjun replied.

She stepped back slightly.

Trying to process.

Trying to understand.

"So you just… left?" she asked.

"No explanation? No warning?"

"I couldn't risk it," he said.

"If I stayed… you would've been part of it."

Emily shook her head again.

"But leaving made it worse."

"I know that now," he said quietly.

That quiet honesty—

It made everything harder to reject.

Inside the house—

Noah sat on the couch.

But he wasn't drawing anymore.

"Who is he?" he asked.

Daniel sat beside him.

Careful.

Measured.

"Someone your mom knew," he said.

Noah looked toward the door.

"They don't look happy."

Daniel followed his gaze.

"No… they don't."

Noah's voice dropped.

"Is he going to take her away?"

That question—

Sharp.

Unexpected.

Daniel's expression softened immediately.

"No," he said firmly.

"He's not."

Noah looked at him.

"Promise?"

Daniel held his gaze.

"I promise."

Outside—

Emily's thoughts were racing.

"Why are you telling me this now?" she asked.

Arjun exhaled slowly.

"Because it's not over."

That sentence—

Changed everything.

Emily's eyes widened slightly.

"What do you mean it's not over?"

Arjun looked at the house.

At the door.

At everything she had built.

"They're back," he said quietly.

Emily felt her stomach drop.

"And this time… they know about you."

A cold silence followed.

"Who are 'they'?" she whispered.

Arjun's jaw tightened.

"People I should've never been involved with."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only safe one," he replied.

Emily stared at him.

Her mind jumping between fear… and anger.

"You brought this to my door," she said.

Arjun shook his head quickly.

"No. I came to warn you."

"By showing up?" she snapped.

"You think that doesn't make things worse?"

Arjun's voice softened.

"I didn't have another way."

Emily looked away.

Her thoughts spinning.

Everything she had worked to protect—

Everything she had built—

Suddenly didn't feel as safe.

"What do you want from me?" she asked.

Arjun hesitated.

Then said—

"Be careful."

Emily almost laughed again.

"That's it?"

"For now," he said.

"For now?" she repeated.

Arjun nodded.

"And… there's something else."

Emily's expression hardened again.

"What?"

Arjun looked toward the door.

Then back at her.

"He deserves to know everything."

Emily's heart skipped.

"You don't get to decide that," she said.

Arjun's voice stayed calm.

"No. But the truth doesn't stay hidden forever."

Emily didn't respond.

Because she knew—

He wasn't wrong.

Inside—

Daniel stood now.

Restless.

Something felt off.

Too long.

Too quiet.

He glanced at Noah.

Then back at the door.

And in that moment—

He made a decision.

"I'll be right back," he said.

Noah looked up.

"Where are you going?"

"Just outside," Daniel replied.

Noah hesitated.

Then nodded slowly.

Daniel opened the door.

Stepping out into the tension.

Emily turned immediately.

"Daniel—"

But it was too late.

Arjun and Daniel—

Now stood face to face.

Two different pasts.

One shared present.

And a truth—

That hadn't fully come out yet.

Daniel looked at Arjun.

Then at Emily.

"What's going on?"

Emily didn't answer.

Because she didn't know how to explain something—

That was only just beginning to unravel.

And as the three of them stood there—

One thing became clear—

This wasn't just about the past anymore.

It was about what was coming next.

And whether they were ready for it.
