The afternoon had settled into a calm rhythm.
Soft sunlight filled the room.
Noah was busy coloring.
Daniel sat beside him, pretending to understand the "rules" of drawing that Noah kept changing every few minutes.
Emily stood near the window again—
Watching.
Thinking.
Feeling that quiet balance they had somehow found.
Then—
A knock on the door.
Not loud.
Not urgent.
But unexpected.
All three of them paused.
Emily frowned slightly.
"I'm not expecting anyone."
Noah looked up.
"Maybe it's the future," he said casually.
Daniel chuckled.
"I hope the future doesn't knock like that."
Emily walked toward the door slowly.
Something about that knock—
It didn't feel random.
She opened it.
And froze.
Her breath caught.
Her hand tightened slightly on the door.
"Emily."
That voice—
She hadn't heard it in years.
Standing in front of her—
Was someone from a past she had tried very hard to leave behind.
"Arjun…?"
The name slipped out before she could stop it.
The man standing there gave a small, uncertain smile.
"I wasn't sure if you'd recognize me."
Emily didn't respond immediately.
Because of course she recognized him.
How could she not?
Arjun.
The man she had built a life with after leaving everything behind.
The man who had once been part of her future.
And the man who had disappeared from it.
"What are you doing here?" she asked quietly.
Arjun glanced past her.
Inside the house.
"I think we should talk."
Emily's expression hardened slightly.
"There's nothing to talk about."
Arjun shook his head.
"There is."
Before she could respond—
Noah's voice came from inside.
"Mom? Who is it?"
Emily turned slightly.
"Just… someone I know."
But it was too late.
Noah had already walked closer.
And Daniel—
He was standing now.
Watching.
Carefully.
Arjun's eyes moved to Noah.
And something in his expression changed.
Surprise.
Recognition.
Something deeper.
"That's him… isn't it?" Arjun said quietly.
Emily stepped in front slightly.
Blocking the view.
"What do you want, Arjun?"
But Arjun didn't answer her question.
His eyes moved again—
This time to Daniel.
And everything shifted.
"Daniel."
The name was spoken slowly.
Carefully.
Daniel's expression changed.
"How do you know my name?"
Arjun let out a small breath.
"Because I've heard it before."
Emily felt her heart drop.
"Arjun, stop," she said firmly.
But it was already happening.
The past—
The part she had tried to keep separate—
Was standing right at her door.
And it wasn't leaving.
Noah looked confused.
"Mom… who is he?"
Emily didn't answer.
Because she didn't know how to.
Not in a way that wouldn't change everything.
Arjun stepped forward slightly.
Not aggressive.
But determined.
"I think he deserves to know," he said, looking at Daniel.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Know what?"
Emily shook her head.
"No. Not like this."
Arjun's expression tightened.
"Then when?"
Silence.
Heavy.
Sharp.
Unavoidable.
Noah looked between them.
His small voice breaking through everything—
"What's going on?"
Daniel stepped forward slightly now.
Closer to Emily.
Closer to Noah.
Protective.
Instinctive.
"Whatever this is," Daniel said calmly,
"You don't do it in front of him."
Arjun looked at him.
Then nodded slowly.
"Fair enough."
But his eyes didn't lose that intensity.
"Then we talk. Now."
Emily hesitated.
Everything inside her told her to say no.
To close the door.
To protect what they had built.
But something else—
Something deeper—
Told her this wouldn't go away.
Not this time.
She turned to Daniel.
Her voice softer now.
"Can you… stay with Noah?"
Daniel nodded immediately.
"Of course."
Noah grabbed her hand.
"Don't go."
Emily knelt down.
"I'm not going far," she said gently.
"I'll be right outside."
Noah hesitated.
Then slowly let go.
Emily stood up.
Took one last look at Daniel.
A silent message passed between them.
Be careful.
I will.
Outside—
The air felt colder.
Heavier.
Emily closed the door behind her.
Turning to face Arjun fully.
"What do you want?" she asked again.
Arjun looked at her.
Not angry.
Not calm either.
Just… serious.
"I didn't come here to cause problems," he said.
Emily let out a dry breath.
"Then you chose the wrong time."
Arjun shook his head.
"No. I chose the only time I had left."
Emily frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Arjun looked down briefly.
Then back at her.
"It means… you don't know everything."
Emily's chest tightened.
"I don't want to know anything."
Arjun's voice dropped.
"You will when I tell you why I left."
Silence.
Because that was the one question she had buried for years.
Why.
Why he disappeared.
Why he never came back.
Why he never explained.
Emily's voice came out quieter now.
"…Why now?"
Arjun held her gaze.
"Because it doesn't just involve me anymore."
Inside the house—
Daniel stood near Noah.
Trying to keep things calm.
But his mind was racing.
Because one thing was clear—
That man at the door—
Wasn't just part of Emily's past.
He was about to become part of their present.
And maybe—
Their future.
And whatever truth he had brought with him—
It was going to change everything.
