Chapter 40
Emily couldn't breathe for a second.
Not because of fear.
But because of what was about to come out.
"Say something," Daniel said softly.
His voice wasn't angry.
Not yet.
But there was tension in it.
A question waiting for an answer.
Emily looked at him.
Then at Arjun.
Then away.
"I didn't tell you… everything," she admitted quietly.
The words hung in the air.
Heavy.
Daniel didn't react immediately.
He just watched her.
Carefully.
"What didn't you tell me?" he asked.
Emily swallowed.
Her hands slightly trembling now.
"Before all of this… before Noah… before I moved here…"
Her voice slowed.
Like each word was being pulled out of her.
"I worked somewhere."
Daniel frowned slightly.
"That's not exactly a secret."
Emily shook her head.
"It wasn't just a job."
Arjun stayed silent now.
Letting her speak.
Because this part—
Was hers.
Emily took a deep breath.
Then finally said it—
"I used to work for a company that handled sensitive data."
Daniel's expression didn't change much.
Yet.
"What kind of data?" he asked.
Emily's eyes met his.
"The kind people would pay a lot to control."
That changed everything.
Daniel's posture straightened slightly.
"You mean… illegal?"
Emily hesitated.
Then nodded.
"Not officially," she said.
"But it wasn't clean either."
Arjun added quietly—
"That's how they found her."
Emily shot him a look.
"I'm explaining."
Arjun raised his hands slightly.
"Go on."
Emily closed her eyes for a second.
Then continued—
"I didn't know at first. I thought it was just… corporate work. Data analysis. Security."
Her voice tightened.
"But then I started noticing patterns."
Daniel listened closely.
"People disappearing from projects," she said.
"Files being locked without explanation… names that didn't match real identities."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"And you stayed?"
"I didn't understand it fully at the time," she replied quickly.
"But when I did…"
She paused.
"I tried to leave."
Arjun looked at her.
"And that's when things changed."
Emily nodded slowly.
"They didn't like that," she said.
Silence.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Who are 'they'?"
Emily shook her head.
"I never knew their real names."
Arjun added—
"Because people like that don't use real names."
The pieces were starting to connect now.
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
"So let me get this straight…"
He looked at Emily.
"You were involved in something dangerous… you tried to leave… and now they're back?"
Emily nodded slowly.
"And you didn't think to tell me?" he asked.
That question—
It hurt more than anything else.
Emily looked at him.
"I was trying to protect you."
Daniel let out a quiet breath.
"Why does everyone keep saying that like it makes things better?"
That hit deeper than he expected.
Even for himself.
Emily stepped closer.
"I didn't want this life to follow me," she said.
"I wanted something normal… something safe for Noah."
Daniel's voice softened slightly.
"But now it has."
Emily nodded.
From inside—
Noah's voice echoed again.
"Mom?"
Everything paused.
Reality returned.
Because no matter how complicated things became—
He was still there.
Waiting.
Unaware.
Daniel turned toward the door.
Then back at Emily.
"What do we do now?" he asked.
This time—
He wasn't asking alone.
He was asking with her.
Emily took a breath.
Trying to steady herself.
"We don't panic," she said.
Arjun let out a small, almost ironic laugh.
"That's ambitious."
Emily ignored him.
"We think," she continued.
"We stay ahead."
Daniel nodded slightly.
"And we keep him safe," he added.
Emily's eyes softened.
"Yes."
Arjun watched them both.
Then said quietly—
"They won't stop easily."
Daniel looked at him.
"Neither will we."
A quiet understanding formed.
Not trust.
Not fully.
But alignment.
For now.
Emily turned toward the door.
Her hand resting on it.
Then she stopped.
Because she knew—
The moment she opened it—
She had to be someone else again.
Stronger.
Calmer.
A mother.
She opened the door.
Noah stood there.
Looking up at her.
"Is everything okay?" he asked.
Emily forced a small, gentle smile.
"Yes."
But this time—
It wasn't entirely true.
Behind her—
Daniel stepped in.
Standing close.
Not just beside her.
With her.
And outside—
Arjun remained.
Part of the storm that had just begun.
Because the truth was finally out.
And now—
There was no going back.
Only forward.
Into something unknown.
Something dangerous.
Something that would test everything they had built.
But one thing was clear—
They weren't facing it alone anymore.
