Chapter 42 - The Name He Didn't Say

The air shifted the moment she stepped closer.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

But controlled.

Too controlled.

Daniel didn't move.

Didn't step aside.

Didn't invite her in.

"Go back," he said quietly.

The woman tilted her head slightly.

As if amused.

"That's not how this works," she replied.

Emily stood just behind him now.

Her instincts sharp.

Her thoughts racing.

"You know her," Emily said.

It wasn't a question.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"Yeah."

"From where?" she asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

And that silence—

Said enough.

The woman's eyes shifted to Emily.

Studying her.

Carefully.

"So you're Emily," she said.

Emily stiffened slightly.

"You already know that."

The woman smiled faintly.

"I know a lot of things."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"Stop."

She glanced at him.

Unbothered.

"You always hated when I talked too much," she said.

Emily looked between them.

The tension—

It wasn't new.

It had history.

"What do you want?" Emily asked.

The woman's gaze returned to her.

"Simple," she said.

"I want to talk."

Daniel shook his head immediately.

"No."

The woman sighed.

"You don't really have the luxury of saying no right now."

That line—

It hit the same way Arjun's words had.

Controlled.

Certain.

Emily stepped forward slightly.

Standing beside Daniel now.

"Then say what you came to say," she said.

The woman studied her for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Fair."

A pause.

Then—

She said something that changed everything.

"You didn't leave cleanly."

Emily's breath caught.

Daniel's expression darkened.

"I told you not to come here," he said.

The woman ignored him.

"You walked away with something that doesn't belong to you," she continued.

Emily shook her head immediately.

"I didn't take anything."

The woman raised an eyebrow.

"Not intentionally, maybe."

Silence.

Daniel stepped forward.

Enough.

"That's enough," he said firmly.

But she didn't stop.

"Data doesn't just disappear," she added.

Emily's mind flashed back.

Files.

Systems.

Locked access.

"No…" she whispered.

The woman watched her reaction closely.

"There it is," she said softly.

Daniel clenched his jaw.

"You're not doing this here."

The woman finally looked at him fully again.

"You think this is just about her?" she asked.

Daniel didn't respond.

Because deep down—

He already knew the answer.

Inside—

Noah shifted again.

Turning slightly.

Still asleep.

Still unaware.

Outside—

The woman took one small step closer.

"You really didn't tell her?" she said to Daniel.

Emily's eyes snapped toward him.

"Tell me what?"

Daniel stayed silent.

And that silence—

Was louder than anything else.

"Daniel," Emily said, her voice tightening.

He ran a hand through his hair.

Frustration.

Conflict.

"I was going to," he said.

"When?" she asked.

No answer.

The woman let out a quiet breath.

"This is exhausting," she muttered.

Then—

She said it.

"He worked for them too."

Everything stopped.

Emily stared at Daniel.

"No," she said immediately.

Daniel didn't deny it.

Didn't confirm it either.

But his eyes—

They told the truth.

Emily stepped back slightly.

"You knew?" she asked.

His voice was low.

"I knew enough."

Her heart dropped.

"You knew what I was involved in… and you didn't say anything?"

"I was trying to protect you," he said.

Emily let out a bitter breath.

"Again with that word."

Daniel stepped closer.

"It's not like that."

"Then what is it like?" she asked.

He hesitated.

And that hesitation—

Hurt more than any answer.

The woman watched them both.

Calm.

Observing.

"This is exactly why secrets don't work," she said.

Daniel turned sharply.

"Stay out of this."

She shrugged slightly.

"I would… if it didn't involve both of you."

Emily shook her head slowly.

Trying to process.

"This doesn't make sense," she said.

But it did.

Too much.

That's why it hurt.

Daniel spoke again.

"I left before things got worse," he said.

Emily looked at him.

"So did I."

A quiet, painful understanding passed between them.

The woman crossed her arms.

"And yet… here we are."

Silence fell again.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Then—

Daniel asked the question that mattered most.

"What do you want?"

The woman's expression didn't change.

"What was always mine."

Emily's voice trembled slightly.

"What is that?"

The woman met her eyes.

"The data."

A cold realization spread.

Because this—

This wasn't just about the past anymore.

It was about something they still had.

Something they didn't even know they had.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"And if we don't have it?"

The woman smiled faintly.

"Then we're going to have a much bigger problem."

Inside the house—

Noah's drawing slipped from his hand.

Falling softly to the floor.

Three figures.

Standing close.

No space between them.

Outside—

Everything was about to be tested.

Trust.

Truth.

And the fragile thing they had just begun to build.

Because now—

It wasn't just about staying.

It was about surviving.

Together.

Or not at all.
