Chapter 44 - The Search Begins

Chapter 44: The Search Begins

The house felt different after she left.

Not louder.

Not quieter.

But heavier—

Like every wall had heard something it couldn't forget.

Emily stood still for a moment.

Trying to gather her thoughts.

Trying to hold herself together.

Daniel didn't rush her.

But he didn't step away either.

"We don't have time to freeze," he said gently.

Emily nodded.

"I know."

She pushed herself upright.

"Okay… think," she whispered to herself.

Daniel leaned slightly closer.

"What do you remember?"

Emily closed her eyes.

Letting the past pull forward.

"My last day," she said slowly.

"I was rushing… deleting files… clearing access logs…"

Daniel listened carefully.

"I copied a folder," she continued.

"I didn't even check everything inside it… I just needed proof."

"Proof of what?" Daniel asked.

Emily opened her eyes.

"That something was wrong."

Silence.

Daniel nodded.

"Okay… so that folder—where would you have saved it?"

Emily started pacing now.

Thinking faster.

"I didn't use any company system… I wouldn't risk that."

"Personal device?" Daniel asked.

She shook her head.

"No… too obvious."

A pause.

Then—

Her steps stopped.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Wait."

Daniel straightened.

"What?"

Emily turned toward him.

"A drive."

"What kind of drive?"

"A small one… external… I used it for backup sometimes."

Daniel's expression sharpened.

"Where is it?"

Emily didn't answer immediately.

Because now—

She remembered something else.

"I hid it," she said quietly.

Daniel blinked.

"Where?"

Emily looked around the house.

Every corner suddenly felt different.

"Somewhere safe," she said.

Daniel raised an eyebrow slightly.

"That narrows it down."

Emily almost smiled.

Almost.

"I didn't trust anyone back then," she said.

"So I wouldn't have left it somewhere obvious."

Daniel nodded.

"Good. That means it's still here."

Emily's heart skipped.

Still here.

That meant—

All of this wasn't just chasing shadows.

The danger—

Was real.

Close.

Inside—

Noah sat quietly.

Watching them from a distance now.

He didn't interrupt.

Didn't ask questions.

But he could feel it.

Something was wrong.

Emily started moving.

Searching drawers.

Shelves.

Old boxes.

Daniel followed.

Checking places she pointed to.

Time passed.

Minutes stretching longer than they should.

Nothing.

Frustration began to build.

"It has to be here," Emily muttered.

Daniel didn't stop.

"We'll find it."

Emily shook her head.

"You don't understand… if they get it—"

Daniel cut in.

"They won't."

His voice—

Steady.

Certain.

Emily stopped.

Looking at him.

"You don't know that," she said.

Daniel stepped closer.

"No," he admitted.

"But I know this—"

He held her gaze.

"We're not giving up."

That sentence—

Simple.

But it grounded her.

Pulled her back from the edge of panic.

She nodded slowly.

"Okay."

Then—

Noah's voice came softly.

"Mom?"

Emily turned immediately.

"Yes?"

Noah walked closer.

Holding something in his hand.

"I think… I saw something like that before," he said.

Emily's breath caught.

"What do you mean?"

Noah held up a small object.

A tiny, slightly dusty box.

"I found this when I was looking for my colors last week," he said.

"It was behind the old books."

Emily stared at it.

Her heart pounding.

Because she recognized it.

"Where did you find this?" she asked quickly.

Noah pointed.

"In the storage shelf… behind the blue box."

Emily didn't wait.

She ran.

Daniel right behind her.

They reached the shelf.

Moved the boxes.

Shifted the books.

And there—

Hidden deep behind everything—

Was a small, black drive.

Exactly where she had left it.

Emily picked it up slowly.

Her hands shaking.

"It's here…" she whispered.

Daniel exhaled.

"Good."

But his expression didn't relax.

Because finding it—

Was only the beginning.

Emily looked at the drive.

Then at Daniel.

"What do we do with it?"

That question—

Carried everything.

Daniel thought for a moment.

Then said—

"We decide who we trust."

Silence.

Because that wasn't easy.

Not anymore.

Noah stood at the doorway.

Watching them.

"You found it?" he asked.

Emily turned.

Smiling softly.

"Yes."

Noah nodded.

Satisfied.

"Good," he said.

As if that solved everything.

Emily wished it did.

Because now—

They had the answer.

But also—

The biggest risk.

And somewhere out there—

Someone was waiting.

For exactly what they
