# Chapter 14: The Path of Exile
The sun rose slowly. It crept over the horizon. It painted the sky in shades of orange and red. The light touched the trees. It touched the grass. It touched the mouth of the cave. Lin Yu sat inside. He was in the shadows. He did not step into the light. Light revealed position. Light revealed presence. He was a fugitive now. He was an exile.
He had not slept well. He meditated for four hours. It was not enough. His body was tired. His muscles were sore. He had run far. He had fought a Level 8 enemy. He had escaped death by a thin margin. The Guild Master was strong. Too strong. Lin Yu was Level 3. The gap was five levels. In cultivation, one level was like a mountain. Five levels was a range of mountains. He could not climb it yet.
[Status Report.] The Sword Box voice spoke. It was clear in his mind. It was morning. The system was fully active. [Health: 80%. Qi: 60%. Energy: 500. Morale: High.]
"Health is low," Lin Yu thought. "I need to heal."
[Recommendation: Rest. Consume Healing Pills. Cultivate.]
"I cannot rest," Lin Yu thought. "Chen will send hunters. The Guild Master will send assassins. They know I fled north. They know the direction. If I stay, I die."
[Probability of Pursuit: 90%. Estimated Arrival: 24 hours.]
"Then I move," Lin Yu said. He whispered. His voice was rough. His throat was dry.
He stood up. He stretched. His back cracked. He walked to the cave entrance. He looked out. The forest was green. The birds were singing. They did not know about danger. They did not know about death. Lin Yu envied them. They lived simple lives. They ate. They slept. They flew. Humans were complicated. Humans killed for power. Humans killed for money. Humans killed for revenge.
He went back into the cave. He took out his bag. He checked the contents. He had dried meat. He had water. He had pills. He had traps. He had the Silent Edge. He counted the pills. Five healing pills. Three energy pills. One poison resistance pill. It was not enough for a long war. He needed more. He needed to hunt.
"Box," Lin Yu said. "Scan the area. Find beasts. Find energy."
[Scanning...]
A blue light spread from his chest. It went through the rock. It went through the trees. It mapped the terrain.
[Target Detected. Level 3 Beast. Shadow Cat. Distance: 500 meters. East.]
[Target Detected. Level 2 Beast. Iron Boar. Distance: 1000 meters. North.]
[Target Detected. Energy Source. Unidentified. Distance: 5000 meters. North. Iron Peak.]
"The Peak," Lin Yu said. "That is the fragment."
[Yes. The energy signature matches the Sword Fragment from the sect vault. It is part of the same set.]
Lin Yu nodded. He had a destination. Iron Peak was not just a mission location. It was a power source. If he got the fragment, the Sword Box would upgrade. He would get new skills. He would get stronger. He needed every advantage. The Guild Master was Level 8. Lin Yu needed to reach Level 5 at least. Maybe Level 6. It would take time. But he had no choice.
He ate a piece of dried meat. It was hard. It was salty. He chewed slowly. He saved the rest. He drank water. He filled his bottle from a small pool in the cave. It was clean. He purified it with Qi. He could not get sick. Sickness was weakness.
He checked his robes. They were torn. They were dirty. He took off the blue outer disciple robe. He put on a dark gray cloak. It was hooded. It covered his face. It made him look like a traveler. Like a mercenary. Not a sect disciple. If he wore the sect robe, people would know who he was. They would know he was wanted. Anonymity was armor.
He stepped out of the cave. The air was fresh. It smelled of pine. It smelled of dew. He took a deep breath. He looked back at the sect. It was far away. He could not see it. But he knew it was there. Mei Ling was there. She was in his room. She was safe. For now. Chen would not hurt her. She was leverage. If Lin Yu surrendered, she would live. If Lin Yu fought, she might die. It was a cruel game.
"I will come back," Lin Yu said. He spoke to the wind. "I will burn Chen's hall. I will kill the Guild Master. And I will take you home."
He turned away. He walked north. He did not run. Running wasted energy. He walked with a steady pace. He used Qi to strengthen his legs. He moved silently. He did not break twigs. He did not crush leaves. He was a ghost.
The forest was dense. The trees were tall. They blocked the sun. It was cool underneath. Lin Yu walked for two hours. He saw tracks. Animal tracks. Human tracks. The human tracks were fresh. They wore heavy boots. They carried weapons.
[Hunters.] The Sword Box said. [Sect Security. Level 2. Three individuals.]
"Avoid them," Lin Yu thought.
[Agreed. Combat is unnecessary. Stealth is priority.]
Lin Yu changed direction. He moved east. He went around them. He walked through a bush. The thorns scratched his cloak. He did not feel pain. He felt focus. He heard them talking. They were close.
"Did you see him?" one voice said.
"No. But the tracks go north."
"Master Chen says kill on sight."
"Reward is high."
"Let us find him."
Lin Yu waited behind a tree. He held his breath. They passed. They did not see him. They were sloppy. They looked at the ground. They did not look at the trees. They did not look up. Lin Yu stayed still. He became part of the forest. After they passed, he continued. He did not kill them. Killing would alert others. Silence was better.
He walked until noon. The sun was high. It was hot. He stopped by a river. The water was clear. It flowed fast. He drank. He washed his face. He looked at his reflection. He looked tired. His eyes were dark. He looked older. He was only seventeen. But he felt thirty. He felt fifty. Life in the cultivation world was hard. It aged you. It hardened you.
He caught a fish. He used Qi to stun it. He did not use fire. Fire made smoke. Smoke made signals. He ate the fish raw. It was cold. It was slippery. It gave energy. He saved the bones. He buried them. He left no trace.
[Energy Gained: 10. Negligible.] The Sword Box said.
"Every bit helps," Lin Yu thought.
He continued walking. The terrain changed. The trees became sparse. The ground became rocky. The path went up. He was climbing. Iron Peak was visible. It was a large mountain. It was gray. It was bare. It looked like a giant iron nail stuck in the earth. It matched the name.
He walked for another three hours. The sun started to set. The sky turned purple. The shadows grew long. He needed to camp. He could not climb at night. The peak was dangerous. Beasts lived there. Rivals lived there. Night was their time.
He found a spot near a rock formation. It was hidden. It had a good view of the path. He could see anyone coming. He made a small fire. He used dried moss. It made less smoke. He sat by the fire. He warmed his hands. The night was cold. The wind blew through the rocks. It made a whistling sound. It sounded like a spirit crying.
Lin Yu took out the Silent Edge. He wiped it with a cloth. The black sword was clean. It was sharp. It hummed softly. It liked the blood. It liked the hunt.
"Box," Lin Yu said. "Analyze the fragment."
[Scanning...]
The blue screen appeared. It showed a map of the peak. It highlighted a cave near the top.
[Location: Summit Cave. Energy Level: High. Protection: Moderate. There are formations.]
"Formations," Lin Yu said. "Someone set them."
[Yes. Recent activity. Within 48 hours.]
"Tamers?" Lin Yu asked.
[Possibility: 70%. Or sect disciples. The mission is active. Many disciples are here.]
Lin Yu thought. He remembered the mission board. *Clear Beast Nest. Reward: 1000 Points.* Many disciples came for the points. They did not know about the fragment. They did not know about the Tamers. They were fodder. They would die. And Lin Yu would take the fragment. It was cruel. But it was survival.
He ate the last piece of meat. He drank water. He checked his traps. He set them around the camp. Tripwires. Spikes. Smoke bombs. If anyone came, he would know. He lay down. He kept the sword near his hand. He closed his eyes. He did not sleep deeply. He slept with one eye open.
He dreamed of Mei Ling. She was standing in the kitchen. She was smiling. She held a bun. She offered it to him. He reached for it. But she faded. She turned into smoke. The Guild Master stood behind her. He held a knife. He laughed. Lin Yu woke up. He was sweating. His heart beat fast. It was dawn. The sun was rising.
He stood up. He kicked the dirt over the fire. He packed his bag. He checked the traps. They were untouched. No one came. He was safe. For now.
He started climbing. The path was steep. The rocks were sharp. He used Qi to strengthen his legs. He jumped from rock to rock. He was fast. He was light. He reached the halfway point by noon. The air was thinner. It was harder to breathe. He circulated his Qi. It helped.
He heard sounds. Fighting. Screams. Metal clashing. He stopped. He hid behind a boulder. He looked down. There was a group of disciples. They wore blue robes. His sect. They were fighting beasts. Iron Wolves. There were five wolves. There were four disciples. One disciple was down. He was bleeding. The others were tired.
"Help us!" one shouted. They saw Lin Yu. They did not know him. He wore the gray cloak.
Lin Yu watched. He did not move. Helping them would reveal his position. It would waste his energy. It would slow him down. But they were sect brothers. They were his people.
[ Moral Choice Detected.] The Sword Box said. [Help: Light Energy +50. Risk: High. Ignore: Dark Energy +10. Safety: High.]
Lin Yu thought about Chen. Chen would not help. Chen would laugh. Lin Yu was not Chen. He was not the Guild Master. He killed enemies. He protected allies. These disciples were not enemies. They were victims.
"Damn it," Lin Yu said. He drew the Silent Edge. He jumped down. He landed between the disciples and the wolves. The wolves growled. They smelled fresh meat.
"Run," Lin Yu said. His voice was cold. "Go to the base. Now."
The disciples hesitated. "Who are you?" one asked.
"Go!" Lin Yu shouted. He swung the sword. Shadow Slash. The black slash flew. It hit the lead wolf. The wolf fell. The others charged.
The disciples ran. They carried their injured friend. They did not look back. Lin Yu fought. He moved fast. He dodged a bite. He slashed a leg. He stabbed a throat. He killed three wolves. The last two ran away. They were smart. They knew death.
Lin Yu sheathed the sword. He breathed hard. He used energy. He could not afford to waste it. But he gained something else. Reputation. Karma. The Sword Box hummed. It was happy.
[Victory Achieved. Energy Gained: 100. Light Energy +50. Current Energy: 650.]
" Worth it," Lin Yu said. He wiped the blood. He continued climbing. He did not wait for the disciples. They would talk. They would say a man in a gray cloak saved them. Chen would hear. Chen would know Lin Yu was here. But Lin Yu could not save everyone. He had a mission.
He reached the summit by evening. The sun was setting. The sky was red. The wind was strong. It blew his cloak. He stood at the entrance of the cave. It was dark. It was wide. The formation was visible. It was a faint glow. It was around the entrance.
[Formation Type: Warning. It alerts the owner if someone enters.]
"Can you bypass it?" Lin Yu asked.
[Yes. Cost: 50 Energy.]
"Do it," Lin Yu said.
[Confirmed. Energy Deducted: 50. Current Energy: 600.]
Lin Yu walked through the glow. He did not trigger the alarm. He entered the cave. It was damp. It smelled of old dust. It smelled of metal. He walked deeper. He lit a small flame. He saw a pedestal. It was made of stone. On top of it was a shard. It was metal. It was black. It looked like a piece of a sword. It hummed. It matched the Silent Edge.
Lin Yu reached for it. He touched it. It was cold. It vibrated. It flowed into his hand. It went into his arm. It went to the Sword Box.
[Fragment Acquired. Integration Started. Sword Box Evolution: 10%. New Skill Unlocked: Sword Sense.]
Lin Yu felt a change. His senses expanded. He could feel the swords around him. He could feel the metal in the cave. He could feel the weapons of the people outside. It was like a sixth sense.
[Warning.] The Sword Box said. [Presence Detected. Behind you.]
Lin Yu turned. He drew the Silent Edge. A man stood in the entrance. He wore black robes. He wore a mask. He was not the Guild Master. He was a subordinate. A Tamer.
"I knew someone would come," the man said. His voice was smooth. "The fragment is bait. You are the mouse."
Lin Yu did not speak. He calculated the distance. Ten feet. The man was Level 4. Stronger than Lin Yu. But Lin Yu had the fragment. He had the Sword Sense. He could feel the man's weapon. It was a dagger. Short range.
"You work for Chen," Lin Yu said.
"I work for the Guild," the man said. "Chen is a partner. Nothing more. You stole from us. You stole the contracts. You stole the box. You must pay."
"I took what was mine," Lin Yu said.
"Nothing is yours," the man said. "Power belongs to the strong. You are weak. You are Level 3. I am Level 4. Die."
The man charged. He threw the dagger. It flew fast. Lin Yu sensed it. He moved his head. The dagger missed. It stuck in the wall. The man was already close. He had another dagger. He stabbed at Lin Yu's heart.
Lin Yu blocked. Silent Edge met the dagger. Sparks flew. The man was strong. He pushed. Lin Yu stepped back. He used the terrain. He kicked a stone. It hit the man's foot. The man stumbled. Lin Yu slashed. Shadow Slash. It hit the man's arm. The man dropped the dagger. He screamed.
"You cut me," the man said. He was surprised. "You are strong."
"I am alive," Lin Yu said.
The man laughed. He pulled a pill. He swallowed it. His energy surged. His eyes turned red. "Blood Pill. I will kill you even if I die."
He charged again. He was faster. He was reckless. Lin Yu waited. He used Sword Sense. He felt the man's Qi flow. It was chaotic. It was unstable. There was a gap in his defense. His left side.
Lin Yu stepped in. He stabbed. The Silent Edge went into the man's chest. It went through the heart. The man stopped. He looked at the sword. He looked at Lin Yu. He fell. He did not move.
[Victory Achieved. Energy Gained: 200. Current Energy: 800. Level Up Progress: 20%.]
Lin Yu pulled the sword out. He wiped it. He searched the body. He found money. He found pills. He found a map. The map showed the Guild bases. It showed the sect. It showed Chen's house. It was valuable.
He put everything in his bag. He looked at the fragment. It was integrated. He felt stronger. His Sword Sense was clear. He could feel the disciples below. He could feel the beasts. He could feel the hunters coming.
"They are coming," Lin Yu said. "The alarm did not trigger. But they know."
[Yes. The man had a partner. He is dead. The partner will know.]
"Then I leave," Lin Yu said.
He walked out of the cave. He did not go down the path. He went down the cliff. He used a rope. He climbed down. It was dangerous. But it was unexpected. He reached the bottom. He walked into the forest. He did not stop. He walked all night. He put distance between him and the peak. He put distance between him and the sect.
He stopped at a river. He washed the blood. He changed his cloak. He burned the old one. He put on a new one. He looked different. He was ready for the next step.
He opened the map. He looked at the Guild bases. There was one nearby. It was small. It was a supply depot. He could attack it. He could get resources. He could get information.
"Box," Lin Yu said. "Plan the route."
[Route Set. Avoid main roads. Use the river. Arrival: 2 days.]
"Good," Lin Yu said.
He looked at the sect direction. He thought about Mei Ling. He thought about Chen. He thought about the Guild Master.
"I am coming," Lin Yu said. "Wait for me."
He turned away. He walked into the dark. He was alone. But he was not weak. He had the Sword Box. He had the evidence. He had the power. He was the hunter. And the world was his ground.
The sun rose. The new day began. Lin Yu walked into the light. His shadow was long. It stretched behind him. It looked like a path. He followed it. He did not look back. The past was dead. The future was waiting. And Lin Yu would carve it with his sword.
