Chapter 20 - Chapter20:The Guild's Shadow

# Chapter 20: The Guild's Shadow

The morning sun rose over the Imperial Capital. It was a huge city. It was much bigger than the Azure Sect. The walls were high. They were made of gray stone. They stretched for miles. Towers stood on the walls. Guards walked on top. They wore silver armor. They held long spears. They watched the gates. They watched the sky. Cultivators flew on swords. They entered and exited. They showed tokens. They paid taxes. It was a busy place. It was a rich place. But it was also a dangerous place.

Lin Yu woke up in the inn. The room was small. It was cheap. The bed was hard. The sheets were rough. But it was safe. The door was locked. The window was barred. Lin Yu sat on the bed. He crossed his legs. He closed his eyes. He checked his status.

[Status Report.] The Sword Box voice spoke. It was morning. The system was fully active. [Health: 100%. Qi: 100%. Energy: 1140. Illusion: Active.]

Lin Yu nodded. He felt good. The rest helped. The meditation helped. His Qi was full. His meridians were clear. He had acquired the third fragment. The Sword Box had evolved. It was at 30%. He had a new skill. Sword Storm. He needed to test it. He could not use it in the city. It was too loud. It was too destructive. But he could visualize it. He could understand it.

"Box," Lin Yu thought. "Explain Sword Storm."

[Skill Description: Summons multiple sword shadows. Attacks all enemies within range. Damage: High. Cost: 100 Energy per use.]

Lin Yu opened his eyes. He stood up. He walked to the window. He looked out. The street was busy. Merchants shouted. Customers haggled. Carriages rolled on the stone. The noise was loud. It was chaotic. It was perfect for hiding. In a crowd, no one saw you. In a crowd, you were invisible.

He washed his face. He put on his cloak. He pulled the hood down. His face was hidden. The illusion was active. He looked like Lin Feng. He looked like a mercenary. No one knew he was Lin Yu. No one knew he was a fugitive. He checked his bag. He had pills. He had food. He had the map. He had the Silent Edge. It was hidden in his sleeve.

He went downstairs. The innkeeper was at the counter. He was an old man. He was counting coins. He looked up. He saw Lin Yu.

"Leaving?" the innkeeper asked.

"For now," Lin Yu said. His voice was rough. He changed his tone. He did not sound like himself.

"Be careful," the innkeeper said. "The Guild is active. They check everyone."

"Which Guild?" Lin Yu asked. He pretended not to know.

"The Beast Tamers," the innkeeper whispered. He looked around. "They are everywhere. They buy beasts. They buy people. Do not cross them."

"I will remember," Lin Yu said. He paid for the room. He put a spirit stone on the counter. The innkeeper took it. He nodded. He did not say more. He was scared. Everyone was scared.

Lin Yu walked out. The air was fresh. It smelled of food. It smelled of waste. It smelled of life. He walked into the crowd. He kept his head down. He did not look at the guards. He did not look at the shops. He looked at the ground. He watched the shadows. He used his Sword Sense. He felt the metal around him. He felt the weapons. He felt the traps. He was alert.

He went to the Mercenary Guild. It was a large building. It had a courtyard. Many people were there. They waited for missions. They stood in lines. They talked. They drank tea. Lin Yu joined the line. He waited. He listened.

"Did you hear?" one mercenary said. He was big. He had a scar. "The Beast Tamer Guild is recruiting."

"For what?" another asked. He was small. He had a bow.

"Transport," the big man said. "They need guards. For a shipment. From the Capital to the Azure Sect."

Lin Yu's ears perked up. He did not move. He kept his face blank. But inside, his heart beat faster. A shipment to the Azure Sect. It was perfect. It was a chance. He could get close to Chen. He could get close to the Guild HQ.

"How much?" the small man asked.

"500 spirit stones," the big man said. "Plus loot."

"Dangerous," the small man said. "The route is full of beasts. And rebels."

"High risk, high reward," the big man said.

Lin Yu stepped forward. He reached the counter. The clerk was a woman. She wore green robes. She looked tired.

"Name?" she asked.

"Lin Feng," Lin Yu said.

"Level?" she asked.

"4," Lin Yu said.

She looked at him. She used a detection stone. It glowed blue. It confirmed his level. She nodded. She gave him a token.

"Take this," she said. "Go to the Beast Tamer Guild hall. North District. Ask for Captain Zhao. Tell him you are here for the transport job."

"Thank you," Lin Yu said. He took the token. He walked away. He had the lead. He needed to follow it. It was risky. Walking into the Guild hall was dangerous. But it was the only way to get the fragment. The map showed the fragment was in the Guild HQ. He could not break in. He needed to walk in.

He walked to the North District. It was different from the market. It was quieter. The buildings were bigger. They were made of black stone. They had flags. The flags had a beast symbol. A tiger. It was the Guild logo. Lin Yu felt the pressure. The air was heavy. It was dark energy. It was evil. He suppressed his Qi. He hid his aura. He walked to the gate.

Two guards stood there. They wore black armor. They held halberds. They looked at Lin Yu.

"Business?" one guard asked. His voice was cold.

"Recruitment," Lin Yu said. He showed the token. "For the transport."

The guard took the token. He checked it. He looked at Lin Yu. He used a stone. It glowed red. It checked for lies. Lin Yu focused. He used the Sword Box to mask his intent. He thought about money. He thought about the job. He did not think about revenge. The stone stayed green. It meant truth.

"Enter," the guard said. He gave the token back. "Go to the hall. Wait."

Lin Yu walked in. The courtyard was large. It had cages. Beasts were inside. Wolves. Bears. Snakes. They growled. They smelled him. They knew he was a predator. They were scared. Lin Yu ignored them. He walked to the hall. It was a large room. It had benches. Many people sat there. They were mercenaries. They waited. They looked tough. They looked dangerous.

Lin Yu sat in the corner. He watched. He counted. There were twenty people. All Level 3 or 4. One man stood at the front. He wore black robes. He had a whip. He was Captain Zhao. He looked at the group. He smiled. It was a cruel smile.

"Welcome," Zhao said. His voice was loud. "You are here for the job. It is simple. Guard the carriage. Drive it to the Azure Sect. Deliver the package. Get paid."

"What is the package?" one mercenary asked. He was old. He had experience.

"None of your business," Zhao said. His voice became cold. "You guard. You do not look. You do not ask. If you look, you die. If you ask, you die. Understand?"

The mercenaries nodded. They did not argue. They wanted the money. They did not care about the package. But Lin Yu knew. It was not just goods. It was likely slaves. Or forbidden artifacts. Or poison. Chen needed poison. Chen needed weapons.

"Good," Zhao said. "We leave tomorrow. Dawn. Be at the gate. Do not be late. If you are late, you do not get paid. If you run, we hunt you. And we kill your family."

It was a threat. It was clear. The Guild did not trust anyone. They used fear. Lin Yu did not feel fear. He felt anger. But he hid it. He stood up. He walked to the exit.

"Wait," Zhao said. He looked at Lin Yu. "You. New guy."

Lin Yu stopped. He turned. "Yes?"

"Show me your skill," Zhao said. "I need to know you are worth the money."

The other mercenaries looked at Lin Yu. They were curious. Some were jealous. They wanted the job. They wanted to see him fail.

"What do you want?" Lin Yu asked.

"Hit that target," Zhao said. He pointed to a wooden dummy. It was far. Fifty feet. It was made of iron wood. It was hard.

Lin Yu nodded. He drew his sword. It was not the Silent Edge. It was a normal steel sword he bought. He could not reveal the Silent Edge. It was too unique. He held the steel sword. He poured Qi into it. He used Shadow Slash. The slash flew. It hit the dummy. It cut a deep mark. It did not break it. But it was enough.

Zhao nodded. "Acceptable. You are in."

"Thank you," Lin Yu said. He sheathed the sword. He walked out. He did not show off. He did not want attention. Being average was safe. Being the best made you a target.

He walked back to the inn. It was afternoon. The sun was hot. He went to his room. He locked the door. He sat on the bed. He thought about the plan. He was in. He would travel with the Guild. He would reach the Azure Sect. He would have access to the HQ. He could find the fragment. He could expose Chen.

"But it is a trap," Lin Yu thought. "Zhao tested me. He watched me."

[Probability: 50%. They test everyone. It is standard procedure.]

"Maybe," Lin Yu thought. "But I must be careful. I cannot use the Sword Box inside. I cannot use Soul Slash. I must act like a mercenary."

[Recommendation: Conserve Energy. Observe. Wait for the right moment.]

Lin Yu nodded. He ate some food. He drank water. He meditated. He waited for night. He needed to prepare. He needed to buy supplies. He went out again. He bought ropes. He bought hooks. He bought more pills. He bought a map of the Azure Sect. He already knew the sect. But the Guild HQ was separate. It was near the sect. It was hidden.

He returned to the inn. He packed his bag. He checked his weapons. He had the steel sword. He had the Silent Edge hidden. He had daggers. He had traps. He was ready. He lay on the bed. He closed his eyes. He slept for four hours. He woke up before dawn. The sky was gray. The city was quiet.

He went to the gate. The carriage was there. It was large. It was made of black wood. It was pulled by four beasts. They were oxen. But they had scales. They were strong. They could run fast. Ten mercenaries were there. Including Lin Yu. Captain Zhao stood near the carriage. He held a box. It was small. It was locked. It glowed.

"Load up," Zhao said.

The mercenaries climbed onto the carriage. They sat on the roof. They sat on the sides. Lin Yu sat at the back. He watched the box. Zhao put the box inside the carriage. He locked the door. He sealed it with a formation. It was red. It was strong.

"Move," Zhao said.

The driver cracked the whip. The beasts moved. The carriage rolled out of the gate. The guards waved. They let them pass. They knew the Guild. They did not check. The Guild was powerful. They had money. They had influence.

Lin Yu looked back. The Capital was disappearing. The walls were getting smaller. The lights were fading. He was leaving the safety of the city. He was going into the wild. The route was long. Five days. Five days of travel. Five days of danger.

He looked at the other mercenaries. They were alert. They held their weapons. They watched the trees. They watched the road. They knew beasts would attack. They knew bandits would attack. But they did not know the real danger. The real danger was Lin Yu. He was the wolf in the sheepfold.

[Quest Updated.] The Sword Box said. [Infiltration Successful. Next Objective: Protect Cargo. Reach Azure Sect. Locate Fragment.]

"Understood," Lin Yu thought.

The carriage moved fast. The wind blew. It was cold. Lin Yu pulled his cloak tighter. He closed his eyes. He rested. He needed to save energy. He would need it later. When they reached the sect. When he faced Chen. When he faced the Guild Master.

He thought about Mei Ling. She was waiting. She was safe. He would see her soon. He thought about Yue. She was in the Ancient Land. She was watching. He would see her again. He thought about the Guild Master. He was in the shadows. He was waiting. Lin Yu would find him. He would kill him.

The sun rose higher. The road was straight. The trees were thick. They passed a village. It was empty. The houses were burned. The bodies were gone. Beasts did this. Or humans. Lin Yu did not know. He did not care. It was not his mission. His mission was the fragment. His mission was revenge.

"Hey, new guy," a voice said.

Lin Yu opened his eyes. A mercenary sat next to him. He was young. He had a spear. He looked friendly.

"Yes?" Lin Yu said.

"You are quiet," the young man said. "Most people talk. Most people boast."

"I save my breath," Lin Yu said.

"Smart," the young man said. "I am Wang. I am from the South."

"Lin Feng," Lin Yu said. "I am a wanderer."

"Good place to be," Wang said. "No ties. No family. No worries."

Lin Yu did not answer. He had ties. He had family. Mei Ling was his family. The sect was his home. But he could not say that. He looked at the road. He saw a bird. It flew away. It sensed something.

"Stop," Lin Yu said. He stood up.

"What?" Zhao shouted from the front.

"Something is wrong," Lin Yu said. "The birds are gone."

Zhao looked around. He frowned. He raised his hand. "Halt!"

The carriage stopped. The beasts snorted. They were nervous. They smelled something. The mercenaries stood up. They held their weapons. They looked at the trees. The forest was quiet. Too quiet. No insects. No wind.

[Detection: Beasts. Level 5. Count: 3. Distance: 50 meters. Closing.] The Sword Box said.

"Ambush," Lin Yu thought.

"Get ready," Zhao shouted. "They are coming!"

The trees shook. Three beasts jumped out. They were tigers. But they had two heads. They were mutant. They were Level 5. They were strong. They roared. The sound was loud. It shook the ground.

"Fight!" Zhao shouted.

The mercenaries jumped down. They charged. They fought the beasts. Lin Yu stayed on the carriage. He watched. He did not fight yet. He needed to see. He needed to know who was weak. Who was strong. He needed to know who he could trust. Or who he needed to kill.

One tiger attacked Wang. Wang blocked with his spear. The spear broke. The tiger knocked him down. It opened its mouth. It wanted to bite his head.

Lin Yu moved. He jumped off the carriage. He drew the steel sword. He slashed. Shadow Slash. The slash hit the tiger. It cut its leg. The tiger screamed. It turned to Lin Yu. It forgot Wang.

"Thanks," Wang said. He crawled away. He was scared.

"Stay down," Lin Yu said. He faced the tiger. It was big. It was angry. It charged. Lin Yu did not move. He waited. He used Sword Domain. He slowed the tiger. He stabbed. The sword went into its eye. The tiger fell. It died.

The other mercenaries killed the other two tigers. It was hard. They were injured. They were tired. Zhao walked to Lin Yu. He looked at the dead tiger. He looked at Lin Yu.

"Good skill," Zhao said. "You hid your strength."

"I survive," Lin Yu said.

Zhao smiled. It was not a nice smile. "Yes. You survive. For now."

He turned away. He checked the carriage. It was safe. The box was safe. "Load the bodies. We move."

They loaded the beast cores. They were valuable. They left the bodies. They continued the journey. Lin Yu sat back on the carriage. Wang looked at him. He was grateful. He did not speak. He just nodded.

Lin Yu nodded back. He closed his eyes. He rested. The fight was easy. But it was a warning. The wild was dangerous. The Guild was dangerous. But Lin Yu was more dangerous. He was the predator. And he was hunting.

The sun set. The night came. They made camp. They lit a fire. They ate meat. They drank wine. They talked. Lin Yu did not talk. He sat in the dark. He watched the shadows. He felt the Sword Box hum. It was happy. It smelled blood. It smelled power.

"Tomorrow," Lin Yu thought. "We get closer."

He touched the map in his bag. He touched the fragment inside the Box. He was ready. The journey was long. The road was hard. But he had no choice. He had to walk. He had to fight. He had to win. Because losing meant death. And Lin Yu had already died once. He would not die again.

He looked at the fire. The flames danced. They looked like spirits. They looked like souls. They looked like revenge. Lin Yu smiled. It was a small smile. But it was real. He was alive. And that was enough. For now.

The night passed. The sun rose. They packed the camp. They moved on. The Azure Sect was closer. The Guild HQ was closer. The fragment was closer. Lin Yu stood on the carriage. He looked forward. He saw the mountains. He saw the walls. He saw his destination.

"I am coming," Lin Yu said. "Chen. Guild Master. Wait for me."

The wind blew. It carried his words. It carried his promise. It carried his threat. The carriage rolled on. The wheels turned. The beasts ran. Lin Yu stood tall. He was the exile. He was the hunter. He was the judge. And he was just getting started.

The Sword Box hummed. It was ready. The sword sang. It was sharp. And Lin Yu was ready. The game had changed. The pieces were moving. The king was in check. And Lin Yu was the queen. He was the power. He was the threat.

He walked into the light. He walked into the danger. He walked into his destiny. The path was long. The road was hard. But he had no choice. He had to walk. He had to fight. He had to win. Because losing meant death. And Lin Yu had already died once. He would not die again.

He touched the talisman Yue gave him. It was smooth. It was safe. He hoped he would not need it. But it was good to have. Allies were rare. Trust was rarer. He would keep both safe.

He walked on. The mist parted. The path was clear. The beasts hid. They smelled his power. They smelled his intent. They knew he was not prey. He was a predator. And the world was his hunting ground.

The wind blew. It carried the scent of snow. It carried the scent of iron. It carried the scent of blood. Lin Yu breathed it in. It tasted like victory. It tasted like revenge.

"Come," Lin Yu said. "I am waiting."

He disappeared into the trees. He was gone. The forest swallowed him. But he would emerge. Stronger. Faster. Deadlier. The story was just beginning. The first chapter was over. The real story was starting now.

Lin Yu walked. He did not look back. He looked forward. He looked at the Capital. He looked at the sky. He looked at the future. And he smiled. It was a small smile. But it was real. He was alive. And that was enough. For now.
