# Chapter 13: The Shadow in the Sect

The night was long. The alarm bells rang for hours. The sound was loud. It echoed off the stone walls. It vibrated in Lin Yu's chest. He sat on his bed. He did not move. He did not light a candle. The room was dark. The only light came from the moon. It slipped through the window. It fell on the floor. It made a pale square on the wood.

Lin Yu listened. He heard footsteps running outside. He heard shouts. He heard the roar of the beast. It was angry. It was in pain. Then, silence. The beast was dead. The bells stopped. The sect went quiet. But it was not peaceful. It was a heavy quiet. It was the quiet of fear. People were scared. They did not know what happened. They did not know why a Level 5 Iron Bear entered the sect.

Lin Yu touched the floorboard. It was loose. Underneath was the box. The evidence. The contracts. They proved Chen's treason. They proved the Beast Tamer Guild's presence. They proved the Guild Master was here. The man who killed him in his past life.

[Hostile Presence Detected.] The Sword Box voice spoke. It was low. It was urgent. [Range: 500 meters. Moving.]

Lin Yu froze. He did not breathe. He listened. He felt a pressure in the air. It was dark energy. It was cold. It was searching. The Guild Master was hunting. He knew someone was in the vault. He knew someone took the box. He was scanning the disciples. He was looking for the thief.

[Hide.] The Sword Box said. [Use Qi Concealment.]

Lin Yu closed his eyes. He circulated his Qi. He pushed it down. He hid it in his dantian. He made his aura weak. He looked like a Level 1 disciple. He looked like a servant. He looked harmless.

The pressure moved past his room. It went to the next building. It lingered. Then it faded. The Guild Master did not find him. Not yet.

Lin Yu let out a breath. He wiped sweat from his forehead. He was safe for now. But he could not stay here. The sect was compromised. The Elders were corrupt. The Master was an enemy. He was surrounded.

[Survival Probability: 40%.] The Sword Box said. [Recommendation: Leave. Immediately.]

"I cannot," Lin Yu thought. "Mei Ling is here. If I leave, Chen will kill her. She knows too much."

[Alternative: Hide her. Move her.]

"I will," Lin Yu said. "But first, I need to secure the evidence. I cannot carry it. It is too dangerous."

Lin Yu stood up. He walked to the corner of the room. He moved a stack of books. He dug a hole in the wall. It was behind the wood. He put the box inside. He covered it. He put a formation tag on it. It was a hiding tag. It masked the energy. Only he could find it.

He sat back on the bed. He waited for the sun. He did not sleep. He meditated. He circulated his Qi. He healed his muscles. He had run fast. He had jumped high. He was tired. But he could not rest.

The sun rose. The light was gray. The sect woke up. The noise started. People talked. They whispered. They speculated.

"Did you hear?"

"A bear. Inside the walls."

"An Elder died."

"No, only injured."

"Someone let it in."

Lin Yu opened his door. He stepped out. He walked to the kitchen. He needed to see Mei Ling. He needed to know she was safe. The path was crowded. Disciples stood in groups. They talked loudly. They looked at the walls. The walls were damaged. The stone was broken. The bear had crashed through.

He reached the kitchen. The door was open. Servants were working. They looked scared. Their hands shook. They dropped plates. They spilled water. They knew something was wrong.

He saw Mei Ling. She was at the stove. She stirred a pot. She did not look at him. She kept her head down. But he saw her hands. They were white. She held the spoon tight.

He walked to her. He stood beside her. He did not speak. He waited. She turned. She saw him. Her eyes widened. She looked at his face. She looked for injuries.

"You are here," she whispered. She put the spoon down. "I heard the bear. I heard the alarms. I thought..."

"I am safe," Lin Yu said. He kept his voice low. "Listen to me. We need to move."

"Move?" Mei Ling asked. "Where?"

"Not yet," Lin Yu said. "But you cannot stay here. The kitchen is open. Anyone can come in. Anyone can hurt you."

"I cannot leave," Mei Ling said. "I am a servant. I have duties."

"I will handle the duties," Lin Yu said. "You will stay in my room. It is locked. It is safe. I have food there. I have water. You will not come out. Not until I say."

"Lin Yu," Mei Ling said. She looked around. The other servants were watching. "People will talk. If I stay in your room..."

"Let them talk," Lin Yu said. "Better they talk than you die. Do you trust me?"

Mei Ling looked at him. She saw the seriousness in his eyes. She nodded. "Yes. I trust you."

"Good," Lin Yu said. "Finish your work. Then come. I will wait outside."

He walked away. He stood in the shadow of the building. He watched the gate. He watched the paths. He looked for Chen. He looked for the black robes. He did not see them. But he felt them. They were watching.

An hour passed. Mei Ling came out. She carried a small bag. It had her clothes. She had nothing else. She looked scared. She walked to him. He did not speak. He led her to his room. He opened the door. He let her in. He locked the door. He put the chair under the handle.

"Stay here," Lin Yu said. "Do not open for anyone. Except me. If I knock three times, you open. If anyone else knocks, you stay silent."

"What about you?" Mei Ling asked. She held his sleeve. "Where will you go?"

"I have work," Lin Yu said. "I need to fix this."

"Be careful," Mei Ling said. "Please."

"I will," Lin Yu said. He turned. He opened the door. He stepped out. He locked it. He walked away. He did not look back.

He went to the Mission Hall. He needed to act normal. He needed to show his face. If he hid, people would suspect him. He needed to be visible. He needed to be boring.

He stood in line. He submitted a simple mission. Herb collection. Low level. Easy. The clerk looked at him. The clerk looked tired. His eyes were red. He had not slept.

"Approved," the clerk said. He stamped the scroll. "Be careful. The forest is dangerous."

"I know," Lin Yu said. He took the scroll. He walked out.

He felt a presence. Someone was following him. He did not turn. He walked to the training yard. He started practicing. He swung his sword. He hit the dummies. He made noise. He wanted the follower to see he was just training.

The follower stopped at the gate. He wore gray robes. He was Chen's man. He watched for ten minutes. Then he left. He reported to Chen. Lin Yu was safe. For now.

Lin Yu stopped training. He wiped his sweat. He walked to the Elder Hall. He needed to see Chen. He needed to gauge the damage. He needed to see if Chen knew about the vault.

He reached the hall. The guards stood outside. They looked tense. They held their spears tight. They looked at Lin Yu.

"State your business," one guard said.

"I want to report the beast attack," Lin Yu said. "I saw something."

The guard looked at him. "Wait."

The guard went inside. He came back. "Enter."

Lin Yu walked in. Chen sat at the desk. He looked angry. His face was red. His hands shook. He held a cup. He crushed it. The ceramic broke. Tea spilled on the table.

"Speak," Chen said. His voice was rough.

"I was on the wall," Lin Yu said. "During the attack. I saw a black robe. Near the breach."

Chen's eyes narrowed. "A black robe?"

"Yes," Lin Yu said. "Like a Beast Tamer. He cut the formation. Then he left."

It was a lie. But it was a good lie. It shifted the blame. It pointed to the Tamers. It protected Lin Yu. It made Chen nervous. Chen knew the Tamers were here. He knew they were exposed.

"Did you see his face?" Chen asked.

"No," Lin Yu said. "He wore a mask. But he was tall. Strong."

Chen leaned back. He thought. He looked at Lin Yu. He did not know if Lin Yu was lying. He did not know if Lin Yu knew the truth.

"Good," Chen said. "You did well. You may go."

Lin Yu bowed. He turned. He walked out. He felt Chen's eyes on his back. They were like knives. They were cold. Lin Yu knew Chen would try to kill him soon. The lie bought him time. But not much.

He walked to his room. He checked the lock. It was intact. He knocked three times. Mei Ling opened the door. She looked relieved.

"No one came," she said.

"Good," Lin Yu said. He went in. He sat at the table. He poured water. He drank it. He was thirsty.

"Lin Yu," Mei Ling said. "What is happening? The Elders are arguing. The Master is awake. He is asking questions."

"The sect is sick," Lin Yu said. "Chen is the disease. The Tamers are the virus. I need to cure it."

"How?" Mei Ling asked. "Chen is an Elder. You are a disciple."

"I have proof," Lin Yu said. "But I cannot use it yet. The Guild Master is here. He is stronger than me. If I expose Chen, the Master will kill me. I need to grow stronger. Or I need to make them fight each other."

"Can you do that?" Mei Ling asked.

"Yes," Lin Yu said. "The Tamers use Chen. But they do not respect him. If I make Chen look weak, the Tamers will drop him. If I make the Tamers look dangerous, the Sect Master will hunt them."

"It is risky," Mei Ling said.

"Everything is risky," Lin Yu said. "Living is risky. Dying is risky. I choose the risk that gives me a chance."

He stood up. He walked to the window. He looked at the Elder Hall. It was far. It was high. It was protected.

"Box," Lin Yu thought. "Analyze the Sect Master."

[Scanning...]

A blue screen appeared. It showed the Sect Master's energy. It was Level 7. Strong. But not invincible.

[Status: Poisoned.] The Sword Box said. [Slow acting. Source: Chen.]

"Chen is poisoning the Master," Lin Yu thought. "That is why he is weak. That is why Chen has power."

[Correct. If the Master dies, Chen becomes Sect Leader. Then the sect falls to the Tamers.]

"I cannot let that happen," Lin Yu said. "I need to cure the Master. But I cannot get close."

[Indirect Method. Send the cure. Anonymously.]

"Yes," Lin Yu said. "I have the antidote formula. I can make it. I can leave it at his door."

"Lin Yu," Mei Ling said. "You are talking to yourself."

"Sorry," Lin Yu said. "Thinking."

He went to his bag. He took out his alchemy kit. He had herbs. He had pills. He crushed them. He mixed them. He made a small bottle. It was green. It smelled bitter. It was the cure.

"Tonight," Lin Yu said. "I will deliver it."

"Be careful," Mei Ling said.

"I will," Lin Yu said.

He waited for night. He ate some dried meat. He drank water. He sharpened his sword. He checked his traps. He was ready.

The sun set. The moon rose. The sect was quiet. The guards were tired. They walked slowly. They yawned. Lin Yu slipped out of his room. He locked the door. He hid in the shadows. He moved like a ghost.

He reached the Master's hall. It was large. It was protected by formations. He could not fly. He had to walk. He avoided the guards. He avoided the cameras. He reached the door. He placed the bottle. He put a note. *For your health.*

He turned to leave. He felt a presence. It was behind him. It was close.

"Leaving so soon?"

Lin Yu turned. A man stood there. He wore black robes. He wore a mask. It was the Guild Master. He held a sword. It was red. It glowed.

"I knew you would come back," the man said. "You are brave. Or stupid."

Lin Yu did not speak. He held the Silent Edge. He calculated the distance. Ten feet. Too close to run. Too far to strike.

"Give me the box," the man said. "And I will let you live. You can serve me. Like you did before."

"Before?" Lin Yu asked. "I do not know you."

"Do not lie," the man said. "I know your soul. I killed you once. I will kill you again."

Lin Yu's heart beat fast. He knew. The man remembered. Or he suspected. It did not matter. The intent was the same. Death.

"Come and take it," Lin Yu said.

The man laughed. He charged. He was fast. He was Level 8. Lin Yu was Level 3. The gap was huge. Lin Yu did not block. He dodged. He rolled. He threw a smoke bomb. The area filled with smoke.

He ran. He did not look back. He heard the man cough. He heard the sword slash the smoke. It missed. Lin Yu reached the wall. He climbed. He jumped. He landed outside. He ran into the forest.

He did not stop. He ran for miles. He reached a cave. He hid inside. He breathed hard. His lungs burned. His legs shook. He was alive. But the sect was no longer safe. The Guild Master knew him. He would hunt him.

[Quest Updated.] The Sword Box said. [Location Compromised. New Objective: Escape. Grow Stronger. Return.]

"I know," Lin Yu said. "I will return."

He sat in the cave. He waited for the sun. He held his sword. He was alone. But he was not defeated. He had the cure. The Master would live. Chen would fail. The Tamers would be exposed.

But Lin Yu could not be there to see it. Not yet. He needed to leave. He needed to go to the Ancient Land. He needed to find the Sword Fragments. He needed to become strong enough to kill a Level 8.

"Mei Ling," he thought. "She is safe. For now. Chen will not hurt her. She is leverage. He knows I care."

[Correct. She is safe as long as you are useful.]

"Then I will be useful," Lin Yu said. "I will be a threat."

He closed his eyes. He slept. He dreamed of fire. He dreamed of blood. He dreamed of the future. He would come back. And he would bring hell with him.

The sun rose. Lin Yu stood up. He looked at the sect. It was far. It was small. It was a cage. He was free. He turned away. He walked north. He walked towards the Iron Peak. He walked towards his destiny.

The journey had changed. It was no longer about survival. It was about war. And Lin Yu was ready to fight.
