A short distance away from the ruined school courtyard, hidden perfectly in the dark shadows of a tall tree, a pair of glowing golden eyes watched the scene.
It was Kuroka, Koneko's older sister.
Seeing Elias gently pat Koneko's head and calm her down, Kuroka let out a long, shaky sigh of relief.
She leaned her head back against the rough tree trunk.
Her racing heart finally started to slow down.
She had been watching the entire fight from the very beginning.
When Kokabiel first appeared and attacked the magical barrier, Kuroka had almost jumped out of the trees.
She knew she was a wanted criminal.
She knew she was a Stray Devil. If she showed her face, Rias, Sona, and the Fallen Angels would all try to arrest her or kill her.
But Kuroka didn't care about any of that.
If her little sister was in real danger, she would have risked everything to save her.
She would have fought the entire world for her.
But she didn't have to. Elias had stepped in.
Kuroka watched from the shadows as her little sister closed her eyes and accepted Elias's warm head pat.
She saw the deep fear leave Koneko's small body.
A soft, genuine smile appeared on Kuroka's face.
"Thank you, nya,"
Kuroka whispered softly into the cool night wind. Her voice was full of deep, honest gratitude.
"Thank you for keeping my Shirone safe."
Then, Kuroka's mind shifted. She thought about the crazy fight she had just witnessed.
She remembered how Elias had sliced off Kokabiel's wings without even trying.
And more importantly, she remembered how he had completely humiliated Vali.
Kuroka knew Vali very well. She knew that the White Dragon Emperor was an absolute monster who could destroy entire mountains.
But Elias had treated him like a weak, helpless mouse.
As a Nekomata—a cat spirit—Kuroka had very strong animal instincts.
And her instincts told her to respect absolute power.
Seeing a man who was that incredibly strong, but also gentle enough to comfort a scared little girl... it made Kuroka's heart skip a beat.
Kuroka licked her lips. Her golden eyes glowed in the dark with a brand new, very intense interest.
A deep, playful purr rumbled in her throat.
"He is so strong... so handsome and protective,"
Kuroka thought to herself, her cheeks turning bright red.
She wrapped her arms around herself, imagining his heavy, powerful aura.
"A man that is powerful has the best genes in the world. I definitely want to have his kittens, nya."
She gave one last happy look at her safe little sister and the overpowered boy standing next to her.
Then, with a quiet swish of her black cat tail, Kuroka turned around to leave.
"Leaving so soon?"
Kuroka completely froze. A cold shiver ran right down her spine.
Someone was standing directly behind her on the thick tree branch. Kuroka had incredible animal senses.
She could hear a leaf fall from a mile away.
But she hadn't heard or felt anyone approach her at all.
Kuroka spun around quickly.
Sitting casually on a higher branch was a pale teenage girl wearing simple black clothes.
She had endless, dark eyes and a sweet smile on her face.
It was Dee.
Dee smirked down at the cat girl, happily swinging her legs in the air.
"If you want to have kittens with my boyfriend,"
Dee said playfully,
"You are going to have to go through me first."
Kuroka's eyes went wide. She immediately put her guard up.
Blue flames of Senjutsu magic sparked around her hands.
She dropped into a fighting stance, getting ready to defend herself or run away.
But before Kuroka could even blink, Dee was gone.
*Whoosh.*
Kuroka gasped. Dee was no longer sitting on the branch.
She was suddenly standing right in front of Kuroka, gently pushing the cat girl's glowing hands down.
Kuroka couldn't even react. She couldn't move.
The sheer, terrifying presence coming from this pale girl was heavier than anything.
"Relax, kitty cat,"
Dee smiled warmly, stepping back a little to give Kuroka some space.
"I don't have any bad intentions toward you. I didn't come here to fight."
Kuroka swallowed hard. She kept her tail tucked in tightly, staring at the mysterious girl.
"Then... why are you here, nya?"
Kuroka asked, her voice shaking just a little bit.
Dee tilted her head. Her dark, endless eyes seemed to look right through Kuroka, looking deep into her soul.
"I hear the dead,"
Dee said simply.
"And lately, there has been a huge bunch of dead Nekomata spirits crying out to me. The spirits of your family and your ancestors."
Kuroka's heart stopped. Her breath caught in her throat. Her dead family?
"They are very loud,"
Dee continued, her voice soft and full of genuine pity.
"They keep begging me to save you. They are so worried about their poor, lost Kuroka. They don't want you to be alone anymore."
A single tear pricked the corner of Kuroka's eye.
Hearing that her lost family was still looking out for her from the other side hit her right in the heart.
Dee gave her a sweet, gentle smile.
"Death usually doesn't take requests,"
Dee told her honestly.
"But they asked so nicely, and I got very curious about you. So, I decided to come over here and see you for myself."
Down in the ruined courtyard, Elias suddenly stopped.
He turned his head toward the dark trees just outside the school walls.
Because he and Dee shared such a deep, special connection, he could always feel when she was nearby.
Even though she was hiding in the shadows, he felt her warm energy perfectly.
His sharp eyes looked up through the dark leaves.
Standing high on a thick tree branch, he saw Dee. But she wasn't alone.
Standing right in front of her was a beautiful girl with black cat ears and a tail.
Elias blinked in confusion. He had never seen this cat girl before.
He didn't know anything about the plot of this world, and he had no idea about Koneko's tragic past.
To him, it was just a random stranger with cat ears talking to his girlfriend.
Up in the tree, Dee noticed Elias looking at them.
She turned her head and met his eyes.
She gave him a very bright, playful smile and a happy little wave.
Then, Dee gently grabbed the shocked cat girl's shoulder.
*Whoosh.*
Without a single sound, Dee and the mysterious cat girl completely disappeared into thin air.
They were just gone.
Elias just stood there for a second, looking up at the empty tree branch.
He scratched the back of his head.
He was definitely curious.
Why was the Goddess of Death kidnapping a random cat girl in the middle of the night?
But Elias didn't worry or panic. He trusted Dee completely. If she wanted to take that girl somewhere, she probably had a very good reason for it.
"Elias?"
Rias called out softly, noticing that he was distracted.
"Is everything okay?"
Elias smiled and turned his attention back to Rias, Akeno, Sona, and Koneko.
"Everything is fine,"
Elias reassured them.
He decided not to mention the cat girl right now.
Rias and the others were already exhausted from the long, stressful night.
He would just wait and ask Dee about her new friend later when he got back home to the shrine.
"Let's get you all cleaned up,"
Elias said kindly.
"The problem is over. It's time to go home."
