Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 8: Ghost Eyes (Part III)

The victim had a life.

That was always the first thing people forgot.

Victim: Han Seung Ho (32)

Office worker.

No criminal record.

No known enemies.

Routine life.

Routine death.

"Too clean," Kang Ara muttered as she flipped through the file.

"No one is this clean."

At the Victim's Apartment

The door creaked open slowly.

No sign of forced entry.

Just like the others.

Kang Min stepped in first.

Silent.

Observing.

Ara followed closely behind, gloves already on.

"Let's not miss anything this time," she said.

"We won't," Kang Min replied.

The Living Room

Everything was… normal.

TV.

Couch.

A half-empty cup of coffee on the table.

Nothing overturned.

Nothing broken.

It looked like someone had simply—

Paused their life.

And never returned.

Ara Takes the Lead

"I'll check the personal items," Ara said, already moving.

Drawers.

Shelves.

Documents.

Her movements were quick—but precise.

Focused.

"Captain," she called.

Kang Min turned.

She held up a photo.

"Family."

He walked over.

A small frame.

The victim stood with an older woman—his mother.

Both smiling.

Normal.

Happy.

Alive.

Something Missing

Ara frowned slightly.

"There should be more."

"More?" Kang Min asked.

"Friends. Colleagues. Someone close."

She looked around again.

"But there's nothing."

Kang Min's gaze moved slowly across the room.

Then—

"Check his phone."

Su Young (Remote Support)

"Already on it," Su Young's voice came through.

"I'm inside his call logs."

Ara waited.

"Anything?"

A pause.

Then—

"…That's weird."

Kang Min's eyes sharpened.

"What?"

"There's a number he called multiple times last night," Su Young said.

"But it's not registered."

Bong Soo's voice jumped in. "A burner phone?"

"Maybe," Su Young replied. "Or something more deliberate."

The Last Call

"What time?" Ara asked.

"10:12 PM."

Ara and Kang Min exchanged a look.

Time of death window:

10:30 – 11:00 PM.

The Realization

"He knew the victim," Ara said.

"Or the victim knew him."

Kang Min nodded slightly.

"No forced entry."

Ara continued, "So he was invited in."

Bong Soo whistled softly. "That's creepy."

A Detail

Kang Min moved toward the window.

Something about the room felt off.

Not visually.

But psychologically.

Then he saw it.

The reflection.

Faint.

In the glass.

He stepped closer.

"…Ara."

She turned. "What?"

"Look at this."

The Reflection

Ara walked over.

At first, nothing.

Then—

She saw it.

A faint mark.

Almost invisible unless the light hit it just right.

"Is that…?"

"Finger trail," Kang Min said.

"Someone stood here."

"Watching?" she asked.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"Waiting."

Reconstruction

Ara's mind moved quickly.

"The victim lets him in."

"They talk."

"No struggle."

Kang Min continued, "He moves freely."

"Comfortable."

Ara added—

"Then brings him here."

They both looked at the spot by the window.

Silence.

The Pattern Deepens

"He doesn't rush," Ara said.

"He controls everything."

"He studies them," Kang Min added.

"Before killing them."

Bong Soo's voice came through again. "Okay, I officially hate this guy."

"No impulsiveness," Jae In added calmly from the background.

"This is planned."

Kang Min's expression darkened slightly.

"Yes."

"Very planned."

The Number

"Su Young," Kang Min said.

"Track that number."

"I'm trying," she replied.

A pause.

Then—

"…It's gone."

Ara frowned. "Gone?"

"Completely wiped. No registration, no signal trace, nothing."

Bong Soo groaned. "This guy's a ghost."

A Name Forms

Ara looked at Kang Min.

"Ghost Eyes," she said quietly.

He didn't respond.

But this time—

The name felt real.

Elsewhere

A courtroom stood empty.

Silent.

Still.

A man walked in slowly.

Measured steps.

Calm presence.

He placed a file on the table.

Opened it.

Inside—

Photos.

Victims.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

He studied them for a moment.

Then—

Very gently—

He spoke.

"To be understood…"

A pause.

"…they have to see it."

His voice was soft.

Controlled.

Almost kind.

Back at the Apartment

Ara stepped back, exhaling slightly.

"This isn't random," she said again.

Kang Min nodded.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"It's personal."

A Quiet Moment

As the others continued searching—

Ara looked at Kang Min again.

"You're already ahead," she said.

Not a question.

A statement.

He didn't deny it.

"Something like this…" he said slowly,

"…doesn't start suddenly."

Ara studied him.

"You think it goes further back."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Much further."
