Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 7: Ghost Eyes (Part II)

The room was quiet.

Too quiet for a place filled with answers.

Forensic Lab

The body lay under harsh white light.

Clinical.

Exposed.

Stripped of mystery—

or at least, that was the intention.

Song Kang Min stood near the observation window, arms crossed, eyes fixed.

Beside him, Kang Ara flipped through the preliminary report.

"Time of death: between 10:30 and 11:00 PM," she read.

"No signs of forced entry."

"No defensive wounds."

She paused.

Then looked up.

"That part still doesn't make sense."

Kang Min didn't respond immediately.

Because he was already thinking the same thing.

The Pattern

"They're not fighting back," Ara continued.

"That's not normal."

"No," Kang Min said quietly.

"It's not."

A beat.

Then—

"They see him."

Ara frowned slightly. "What?"

Kang Min's gaze didn't move from the body.

"They look at him," he said. "Before they die."

A pause.

"And they recognize something."

Closer Look

Ara stepped forward, studying the victim's face again.

The eyes.

Still wide.

Still frozen.

"…Recognition," she repeated softly.

Not fear alone.

Something else.

Something worse.

Understanding.

The Mark

"Captain."

Ara pointed again to the neck.

The same small mark.

Precise.

Almost surgical.

"What do you think?" she asked.

Kang Min stepped closer.

He crouched slightly, observing it in silence.

Then—

"Controlled," he said.

"Not rushed."

Ara nodded. "So… experienced?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then he added—

"Very."

Outside the Room

Bong Soo leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

"I don't like this case," he muttered.

"No one does," Su Young replied, eyes still on her tablet.

Jae In stood nearby, quiet, listening—but not leading.

Ara stepped out first.

Kang Min followed.

New Information

"I pulled something," Su Young said, turning her screen toward them.

"Older cases. Just like you asked."

Ara stepped closer. "Find anything?"

Su Young hesitated.

"…Maybe."

She tapped the screen.

A file opened.

Old.

Archived.

Almost forgotten.

Kang Min's eyes shifted slightly.

He already knew.

Before she said it.

The Connection

"Seven years ago," Su Young said.

"Male victim. Case closed."

Ara read quickly.

Then—

Her expression changed.

She looked up slowly.

"…This is—"

Kang Min spoke before she could finish.

"My father."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Ara's Perspective

Ara didn't speak right away.

She looked at him.

Really looked this time.

Not as her captain.

Not as a detective.

But as someone who had just—

Stepped into his own case.

"You knew?" she asked carefully.

"Yes."

"And you think it's connected?"

Kang Min met her gaze.

Calm.

Steady.

"I don't think."

A pause.

"I know."

A Shift in the Room

The atmosphere changed.

This wasn't just another case anymore.

This was personal.

Dangerously personal.

Bong Soo straightened slightly.

"…Captain, are you sure you should be on this?"

Wrong question.

The moment it left his mouth—

He knew it.

Kang Min looked at him.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Just—

Cold.

"Step out if you're unsure," he said.

Bong Soo shook his head immediately. "No, that's not what I meant—"

"Then focus."

Silence.

Ara Steps In

"That's enough," Ara said firmly.

Not loud.

But controlled.

She looked at Kang Min.

Then at the others.

"We stay professional," she continued.

"Personal or not, this is still our case."

A beat.

Then she added—

"And we solve it together."

A Quiet Understanding

For a brief moment—

Kang Min looked at her.

Not as a subordinate.

Not just as a teammate.

But as someone who—

Didn't step back.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't treat him differently.

And that mattered.

More than he would say.

The Next Move

"Reopen all related files," Kang Min said.

"Every victim. Every detail."

Su Young nodded. "Already started."

Jae In added calmly, "We should also look into prosecution records. If cases were mishandled or buried—"

Ara picked up immediately. "There might be someone covering tracks."

Kang Min's eyes darkened slightly.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Or someone guiding them."

Elsewhere

In a quiet office—

A man reviewed a case file.

Clean desk.

Organized.

Precise.

He adjusted his glasses slightly.

His expression calm.

Unreadable.

A photo sat on the file.

A victim.

Eyes wide open.

Frozen.

The man studied it for a moment.

Then—

Closed the file.

Neatly.

Controlled.

Perfectly.

Back at CID

"We're missing something," Ara said.

Kang Min didn't respond.

Because he felt it too.

Something was there.

Just out of reach.

Waiting.

Final Moment

As everyone returned to work—

Kang Min stood still for a second longer.

His thoughts weren't on the room.

Or the team.

Or even the case.

They were somewhere else.

A memory.

A voice.

Soft.

Calm.

Unforgettable.

"You're a quiet one."

His expression hardened slightly.

This time—

Not just with control.

But with intent.
