The night felt normal.
For once.
⸻
Kang Ara pushed the door open and stepped into the apartment, dropping her bag by the side with a tired sigh.
"I'm home."
"Finally!" a voice came from the living room.
Kang Ha Eun sat cross-legged on the couch, laptop open, snacks scattered around her like she had no intention of moving anytime soon.
Ara raised an eyebrow. "You're still awake?"
"I'm working," Ha Eun said, not even looking up.
"You call that working?"
"It's investigative journalism," Ha Eun replied proudly. "Very important."
Ara walked over, glancing at the screen. "You've been eating more than investigating."
"That's part of the process."
Ara let out a small laugh despite herself and dropped onto the couch beside her.
For a moment, everything felt… light.
Normal.
"How was work?" Ha Eun asked.
Ara leaned back slightly. "We found the girl."
Ha Eun's head snapped up. "The kidnapped one?"
Ara nodded.
"She's safe."
Relief washed over Ha Eun's face instantly. "That's good… that's really good."
A small smile formed on Ara's lips.
"Yeah."
There was a brief silence before Ha Eun nudged her.
"You look exhausted."
"I am."
"Then why do you still look like you're thinking about something else?"
Ara didn't answer immediately.
Because she was.
"That case…" she said slowly, "it ended too clean."
Ha Eun frowned. "Isn't that a good thing?"
"It is," Ara replied.
"But it's not the one bothering me."
Ha Eun closed her laptop slightly, now fully paying attention.
"…Ghost Eyes?"
Ara didn't say the name.
But her silence confirmed it.
"You're still thinking about it even after they took it away from you?" Ha Eun asked.
Ara exhaled quietly.
"It doesn't feel over."
Ha Eun studied her for a moment, then smirked slightly.
"You're going to keep digging, aren't you?"
Ara glanced at her.
"…what do you think?"
Ha Eun smiled.
"I think you're terrible at letting things go."
Ara let out a soft scoff.
"And you're worse."
"Of course," Ha Eun said proudly. "I'm a reporter. Digging into things is literally my job."
Ara shook her head, but there was a faint warmth in her expression.
"Just be careful," she said.
Ha Eun waved her off. "I always am."
Ara gave her a look that clearly said she didn't believe that.
But she didn't argue.
Not tonight.
⸻
The next morning came too quickly.
And the quiet from the night before didn't last.
⸻
Kang Min stood by the board in the CID office, the Ghost Eyes case laid out exactly as they had left it.
Nothing had changed.
But everything still felt unfinished.
Ara walked in, closing the door behind her.
"You started without me."
"You're late," he replied.
She walked closer, her eyes scanning the board.
"They reassigned the case," she said. "We're not supposed to be doing this."
Kang Min didn't look at her.
"I know."
A pause.
Then she stepped beside him.
"Good."
That was all she said.
And it was enough.
⸻
They worked in silence at first.
Photos.
Timelines.
Victims.
Looking for something that had been missed.
"Four victims," Ara said quietly. "Same pattern. No forced entry. No struggle."
"He talks to them," Kang Min added.
Ara nodded. "Gains their trust."
A pause.
Then she looked at one of the files again.
"…there's something else."
Kang Min turned slightly. "What?"
"These locations," she said, pointing at the map. "They're not random."
He stepped closer.
"They're spaced out," she continued. "Not too close. Not too far."
"Controlled," Kang Min said.
Ara nodded slowly.
"Yes."
A brief silence passed between them.
Then Kang Min spoke.
"We split."
Ara looked at him.
"I'll check the first two locations again," he said. "You take the third and fourth."
"And Jae In?"
"I'll call him."
⸻
Jae In didn't ask questions.
He never did.
"Send me the address," he said over the phone.
"You sure?" Ara asked. "We can regroup first."
"I'll take a look," Jae In replied calmly. "If there's something there, I'll let you know."
Kang Min didn't argue.
"Stay in contact."
"I always do."
The line went dead.
⸻
The city moved like it always did.
Busy.
Unaware.
Normal.
⸻
Ara walked through one of the victim locations, eyes scanning every detail.
Nothing stood out at first.
Just another ordinary place.
Just like all the others.
But that was the problem.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
⸻
Across the city, Kang Min moved through another location.
His steps were slow.
Measured.
His eyes taking in everything.
Entrances.
Exits.
Blind spots.
He stopped briefly.
Something about the place felt familiar.
Not physically.
But mentally.
⸻
Elsewhere, Jae In arrived at his location.
An older building.
Quiet.
Almost forgotten.
He stepped inside without hesitation.
His expression calm as always.
Observant.
Careful.
He walked deeper into the space, eyes scanning the surroundings.
The silence inside was different.
Heavier.
But he didn't stop.
⸻
Back at her location, Ara paused.
Her phone buzzed.
She glanced at it.
A message.
From Jae In.
"I think I found something."
Her expression shifted immediately.
"What is it?" she typed quickly.
No reply.
⸻
Kang Min's phone buzzed next.
Same message.
Same silence after.
He stared at the screen for a second longer than usual.
Then—
He started moving.
⸻
Far away—
Jae In stood still.
Listening.
The air around him had changed.
The silence was no longer empty.
It was filled with something.
Something watching.
