Chapter 12 - Love For A Day (part12)

Love for a Day – Chapter 12 | Title: When Hearts Defy Fate

The sky above Liang City cracked with thunder.

Lightning tore across the clouds, illuminating the ruined courtyard for a brief second. In that flash of white light, the glowing marriage contract hanging in the air twisted violently, its golden symbols flickering like a wounded creature.

Alex stood beneath it, holding the box high.

The energy inside it roared like a storm.

Emma stood beside him, dagger ready, eyes locked on their enemies.

Li Wei and the betrayer had both stepped back.

For the first time since the battle began… they looked uncertain.

The contract trembled again.

The golden text across the scroll flickered wildly.

Emma whispered, almost in disbelief.

"It's… reacting to us."

Alex nodded slowly.

"Not just reacting."

He looked at the box.

"It's fighting back."

The betrayer's voice cut across the courtyard.

"That's impossible."

Emma turned sharply toward him.

"You keep saying that."

Li Wei's eyes narrowed as he studied Alex.

"No… it makes sense."

Emma frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Li Wei pointed toward the box.

"That artifact was created to stabilize the contract."

He slowly smiled again.

"But you two… are using it to resist the contract."

Alex's grip tightened.

"So what?"

Li Wei lifted his sword.

"So the contract will eliminate the problem."

The scroll above them burst with golden light.

A powerful wave exploded outward.

BOOM!

The force slammed into Alex and Emma.

Both of them were thrown back several steps.

Emma caught herself on one knee.

Alex barely stayed standing.

The box vibrated violently in his hands.

Emma looked up.

"The contract is attacking us directly now."

Li Wei's smile widened.

"Of course it is."

The betrayer stepped forward calmly.

"The final clause has activated."

Alex frowned.

"What clause?"

The betrayer's voice was quiet.

"The clause that decides ownership."

Emma's eyes flashed with anger.

"We're not objects to be owned."

The betrayer shrugged.

"The contract disagrees."

Suddenly the scroll above them began projecting visions again.

But this time they were stronger.

More real.

Alex saw Emma standing far away from him.

Her hand held by Li Wei.

Emma saw Alex walking away into darkness.

Choosing another path.

The illusions attacked their emotions directly.

Emma clenched her teeth.

"Alex!"

Alex shook his head violently.

"I know!"

The whispers returned.

She will leave you.

He will abandon you.

Trust no one.

Emma stepped forward and grabbed Alex's collar.

"Look at me!"

Alex forced his eyes toward her.

The illusion shattered slightly.

Emma spoke slowly and clearly.

"This is fake."

Alex nodded.

"Yes."

The box pulsed brighter.

The illusions cracked.

But Li Wei suddenly rushed forward.

His blade cut through the air.

CLANG!

Emma blocked the strike.

Their weapons locked.

Li Wei smirked.

"You're distracted."

Emma pushed him back.

"You're desperate."

Behind her, the betrayer attacked Alex.

Alex swung the box instinctively.

A blast of energy pushed the betrayer backward.

The courtyard exploded into another battle.

Steel clashed again.

Rain splashed around them.

Emma moved like lightning.

Alex fought with bursts of energy from the box.

But the contract above them glowed brighter with every second.

The golden text began spreading across the sky like cracks in glass.

Emma noticed it first.

"Alex… look."

Alex followed her gaze.

The symbols were expanding.

"What is it doing?"

The betrayer answered calmly while blocking Alex's attack.

"The contract is expanding its control."

Emma's eyes widened.

"Over the city?"

Li Wei laughed.

"Over everything connected to your hearts."

Alex felt a chill run down his spine.

"That's insane."

Li Wei shrugged.

"Power rarely cares about sanity."

Emma slashed toward him again.

Their blades collided.

Sparks flew.

"You're not taking our hearts."

Li Wei leaned closer.

"I don't need to."

He nodded toward the sky.

"The contract will."

The scroll suddenly burst with a powerful pulse.

BOOM!

The ground shook.

Alex dropped to one knee.

Emma grabbed her head in pain.

The contract was now attacking their minds again.

But stronger than before.

Memories twisted.

Fears amplified.

Doubts multiplied.

Emma saw Alex choosing the contract instead of her.

Alex saw Emma disappearing forever.

The illusions were unbearable.

Alex's breathing became heavy.

Emma struggled to stay focused.

Then she suddenly shouted.

"Alex!"

Her voice cut through the chaos.

Alex forced his eyes open.

Emma grabbed his hand.

"Feel that?"

Alex blinked.

"The box?"

Emma shook her head.

"No."

She squeezed his hand.

"Our heartbeat."

Alex paused.

For a moment the illusions faded slightly.

He could feel it.

Their heartbeats.

In rhythm.

The box pulsed again.

This time brighter.

Emma smiled slightly.

"The contract feeds on doubt."

Alex nodded slowly.

"So we give it none."

Li Wei's smile faded.

"What are they doing?"

The betrayer watched carefully.

"They're stabilizing the bond."

Emma turned toward the floating contract.

Her voice was calm now.

"You tried to break our trust."

Alex lifted the box.

"You failed."

The box exploded with light.

A massive wave of energy shot into the sky.

The contract trembled violently.

Cracks appeared in the golden symbols.

Li Wei's eyes widened.

"That's impossible!"

Emma stepped forward.

"Seems like you say that a lot."

The betrayer frowned for the first time.

"This shouldn't happen."

Alex raised the box higher.

The light grew stronger.

The floating contract twisted in the air like it was alive.

Emma whispered.

"Alex… I think we're hurting it."

Alex nodded.

"Good."

Li Wei roared in anger.

"Stop them!"

The remaining fighters rushed forward.

Emma spun into action again.

Her dagger flashed.

Two enemies fell instantly.

Alex released another pulse from the box.

Enemies were thrown back like rag dolls.

The courtyard shook with energy.

The contract's glow became unstable.

Symbols flickered wildly.

Emma suddenly realized something.

"Alex!"

"What?"

"The contract is weakening!"

The betrayer shouted.

"Don't let them break it!"

Li Wei rushed forward again.

His sword clashed against Emma's dagger.

CLANG!

Their weapons locked.

Li Wei glared at her.

"You think you've won?"

Emma pushed him back.

"No."

She looked at Alex.

"We think we're starting to."

Alex focused all his strength into the box.

The energy surged upward again.

The contract shook violently.

CRACK.

A thin golden fracture appeared across the scroll.

Everyone froze.

Even the rain seemed to pause.

Li Wei stared at it.

"No…"

The betrayer's calm expression finally cracked.

"The contract… is breaking."

Emma whispered.

"Good."

Alex breathed heavily.

The box dimmed slightly but continued glowing.

Above them the floating scroll trembled again.

Another crack spread across its surface.

The contract that had controlled their fate for so long…

Was beginning to collapse.

But then something unexpected happened.

The cracks suddenly stopped spreading.

The scroll froze in the air.

And a new light appeared at the center of the contract.

A deeper golden glow.

Stronger than before.

Emma's stomach dropped.

"That's not good."

Alex looked up.

"What now?"

A voice echoed from the sky.

Calm.

Cold.

Powerful.

"You have damaged my contract."

Everyone looked upward.

The light grew brighter.

A new figure began forming inside the glowing scroll.

Emma whispered.

"Alex…"

"What?"

"I think…"

Her voice trembled slightly.

"The real owner of the contract is waking up."

The storm above Liang City roared louder than ever.

And the true enemy had finally appeared.
