Love for a Day – Chapter 14 | Title: The Breaking of Chains
The explosion of light tore through the courtyard like a rising sun.
For a moment, no one could see anything.
The rain turned into shining particles inside the golden storm of energy. The ground trembled violently, cracks spreading across the stone floor as if the earth itself could not handle the power being released.
Alex felt the box burning in his hands.
Not with heat—but with energy.
Emma gripped his arm tightly.
"Alex! Don't let go!"
"I'm trying!" he shouted back.
Above them, the contract scroll twisted like a wounded creature. Golden light flickered wildly across its surface as the cracks continued spreading.
CRACK.
CRACK.
CRACK.
Li Wei stared upward in horror.
"No… this can't be happening!"
The betrayer stepped backward slowly.
"They're actually breaking it…"
The Keeper of the Contract stood calmly in the middle of the storm of energy. His long cloak fluttered around him, untouched by the chaos.
For the first time, there was something like curiosity in his glowing eyes.
"Remarkable."
Emma heard him and shouted angrily.
"You're just going to stand there and watch?!"
The Keeper tilted his head slightly.
"You chose this path."
Alex gritted his teeth.
"And you created this mess!"
The Keeper didn't deny it.
"The contract exists to test hearts."
Emma snapped back.
"Then consider the test over!"
Alex lifted the glowing box higher.
The light from it surged upward like a pillar.
The contract above them trembled again.
CRACK!
Another fracture spread across the golden surface.
Li Wei's face turned pale.
"Master, you must stop them!"
The Keeper remained motionless.
"No."
Li Wei looked stunned.
"No?!"
The Keeper's eyes remained on Alex and Emma.
"They must finish the trial themselves."
Emma scoffed.
"You really love your little experiments."
The Keeper's voice remained calm.
"This is not an experiment."
Lightning flashed across the sky.
"It is truth."
Emma rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, sure."
Alex focused on the box.
The energy inside it was becoming unstable.
He could feel it reacting to his heartbeat… and Emma's.
The box pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Emma noticed.
"Alex… it's syncing again."
Alex nodded.
"With us."
The golden contract suddenly reacted.
A powerful pulse exploded outward.
BOOM!
The force knocked Alex and Emma backward several steps.
Emma barely kept her balance.
Alex nearly dropped the box.
The contract was fighting back.
The Keeper spoke quietly.
"The contract does not want to be destroyed."
Emma wiped rain from her face.
"Too bad."
Li Wei suddenly lunged forward.
"If you won't stop them, I will!"
He rushed toward Alex.
Sword raised.
Emma moved instantly.
CLANG!
Her dagger blocked the strike.
Steel screamed against steel.
"You're really annoying," Emma said coldly.
Li Wei snarled.
"You fools have no idea what you're doing!"
Emma pushed him back.
"We know exactly what we're doing."
Behind them, the betrayer attacked Alex.
Alex swung the glowing box.
A shockwave blasted outward.
The betrayer skidded backward across the wet stone floor.
He looked at Alex carefully.
"The box shouldn't have this much power."
Alex smirked slightly.
"Maybe it likes us more than you."
Emma laughed briefly.
Li Wei growled.
"Enough!"
He attacked again.
The battle exploded once more across the courtyard.
Emma fought Li Wei directly.
Their weapons clashed again and again.
Alex faced the betrayer while protecting the box.
But the real fight was above them.
The contract continued breaking.
Golden cracks spread across the scroll like lightning.
The sky flickered with unstable energy.
Emma suddenly noticed something strange.
"Alex!"
"What?"
"The contract isn't just breaking."
Alex looked up.
She was right.
The golden fragments were slowly separating.
Like pieces of shattered glass floating in the air.
The Keeper watched the phenomenon carefully.
"Yes."
Emma turned toward him.
"What does that mean?"
The Keeper answered calmly.
"It means the contract is choosing."
Alex frowned.
"Choosing what?"
The Keeper's glowing eyes moved between them.
"Whether to collapse… or transform."
Li Wei froze mid-fight.
"Transform?"
The betrayer looked uneasy.
"That has never happened before."
Emma crossed her arms.
"Well today seems full of surprises."
The contract suddenly released another pulse.
This one stronger.
The floating fragments began rotating slowly in the air.
Golden light spiraled around Alex and Emma.
The box vibrated violently.
Alex winced.
"This thing is about to explode!"
Emma grabbed his arm again.
"Hold it steady!"
"I'm trying!"
The Keeper spoke again.
"The contract senses your decision."
Emma frowned.
"What decision?"
The Keeper replied.
"You chose freedom over control."
Lightning cracked across the sky.
The storm grew louder.
The glowing fragments above them suddenly moved faster.
The box in Alex's hands burst with brilliant light.
BOOM!
Energy shot upward into the spinning contract pieces.
The entire sky above Liang City lit up.
Even Li Wei stepped back in shock.
"What is happening?!"
The betrayer whispered.
"The contract is rewriting itself…"
Emma blinked.
"That's a thing?!"
The Keeper nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Alex looked confused.
"Why?"
The Keeper answered simply.
"Because you refused to let it own your hearts."
Emma tilted her head.
"So now it's… adapting?"
The Keeper smiled faintly.
"Yes."
Li Wei shook his head furiously.
"No! That's not how the contract works!"
The golden fragments suddenly aligned.
Like pieces of a new symbol forming in the sky.
The light dimmed slightly.
But the energy became calmer.
More stable.
Alex felt the pressure disappear from his chest.
The box stopped vibrating wildly.
Emma looked up slowly.
"The contract… changed."
The new symbol glowed softly.
Not aggressive.
Not controlling.
Just… present.
The Keeper stepped forward.
"You have done something no one has ever done."
Emma smirked.
"Get used to that."
Alex lowered the box slightly.
"So what happens now?"
The Keeper looked at the new symbol in the sky.
"The contract has lost its authority."
Li Wei looked horrified.
"No!"
The Keeper continued calmly.
"It can no longer control hearts."
Emma grinned.
"Finally."
But the Keeper wasn't finished.
"However…"
Alex groaned.
"There's always a 'however'."
The Keeper pointed upward.
"The bond between you two now exists without the contract."
Emma's smile faded slightly.
"What does that mean?"
The Keeper answered quietly.
"It means your hearts are now completely your responsibility."
Alex blinked.
"They weren't before?"
Emma smacked his arm lightly.
"That's not the point."
The Keeper's glowing eyes watched them carefully.
"The contract tested your bond."
Lightning flashed again.
"And your bond survived."
Emma exhaled slowly.
"So the trial is over?"
The Keeper nodded.
"Yes."
Li Wei suddenly shouted in fury.
"This isn't fair!"
Everyone looked at him.
Li Wei's sword shook in his hand.
"I spent years trying to control the contract!"
Emma shrugged.
"Should've tried trusting someone instead."
Li Wei glared at her.
But the Keeper raised one hand.
And the air froze.
Silence fell across the courtyard.
The Keeper spoke one final time.
"The trial of Love for a Day is complete."
The glowing symbol in the sky slowly faded.
The storm above Liang City finally began to calm.
Rain softened into a gentle drizzle.
Alex looked at Emma.
"So… we survived?"
Emma smiled slightly.
"Yeah."
Alex exhaled in relief.
"For now."
But the Keeper's eyes remained focused on them.
And something in his expression suggested the story…
Was not over yet.
