Chapter 11 - Love For A Day (part 11)

Love for a Day – Chapter 11 | Title: The Last Hour of the Contract

The rain over Liang City had finally begun to slow, but the sky was still heavy with dark clouds. The ruined courtyard where Alex and Emma stood looked like the aftermath of a war. Broken walls, shattered wood, scattered weapons, and puddles of water covered the ground.

Alex leaned slightly forward, breathing hard. The glowing box in his hands pulsed like a living heart.

Emma wiped rain from her face and looked at him.

"Alex… do you feel it?"

Alex nodded slowly.

"Yes… the contract. It's changing again."

The strange energy inside the box was stronger than before. It vibrated in his palms, sending waves through his arms and chest.

Emma tightened her grip on her dagger.

"This means we're close. The contract only reacts like this when its final phase begins."

Alex frowned.

"Final phase?"

Before Emma could answer, a slow clap echoed across the courtyard.

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

Both of them turned.

Li Wei stepped forward from the shadows of the broken gate. His clothes were wet, but his expression was calm—too calm.

Behind him stood the betrayer, the man Emma once called brother.

Li Wei smiled.

"Well done, both of you."

Emma's eyes turned cold.

"Don't pretend to admire us."

Li Wei chuckled.

"Oh no, Emma. I truly admire you. Surviving this long against the contract's power is… impressive."

He slowly raised his hand.

"But unfortunately… this is where it ends."

The betrayer stepped forward.

"The final hour has begun."

Alex felt the box pulse violently.

"What does that mean?"

The betrayer looked directly at him.

"It means the contract will now decide who owns the bond between your hearts."

Emma's expression darkened.

"You're lying."

The betrayer shook his head.

"No."

He pulled something from his coat.

A glowing scroll.

The secret marriage contract.

It floated in the air between them.

Every line glowed with faint golden light.

Alex stared at it.

"That's… the contract."

Emma's voice turned tense.

"Alex… look at the signatures."

Alex's eyes moved across the glowing page.

His heart stopped.

There were three signatures.

Emma Li.

Alex Chen.

And a third one.

Someone else had signed as the contract holder.

Li Wei smiled.

"Yes… the true owner of your bond."

Emma's voice trembled slightly.

"Who… signed it?"

Li Wei tilted his head.

"Someone you both trusted."

The betrayer stepped closer.

"Someone who wanted to protect the contract… at any cost."

Alex's fists tightened.

"You."

The betrayer smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Emma's anger exploded.

"You betrayed us!"

The betrayer sighed.

"I protected the contract."

Emma lunged forward.

Her dagger flashed through the rain.

The betrayer blocked the strike easily.

Steel clashed.

Sparks flew.

"Emma," he said calmly, "you were never meant to survive this."

Alex rushed forward.

The box swung in a wide arc.

BOOM!

A shockwave of white energy blasted across the courtyard.

Several cloaked fighters hidden in the shadows were thrown backward.

Li Wei narrowed his eyes.

"The box… it's responding faster."

Emma stepped beside Alex.

"That's because it's connected to our hearts."

Li Wei laughed.

"Exactly."

He raised his sword.

"And hearts… are easy to break."

Suddenly the air shifted.

A powerful wave of energy exploded from the floating contract.

Alex staggered.

His head spun.

Images filled his mind.

Emma standing beside Li Wei.

Emma turning away from him.

Emma choosing someone else.

Alex dropped to one knee.

"Emma…"

His voice shook.

Emma grabbed his shoulder.

"Alex! Look at me!"

But the illusions grew stronger.

The contract whispered inside his mind.

She will betray you.

Everyone betrays.

Give up.

Alex's breathing grew faster.

Emma shook him.

"Alex! This is the contract's illusion!"

Li Wei smiled coldly.

"The contract feeds on doubt."

Emma gritted her teeth.

"Alex! Trust me!"

Alex looked up.

Her eyes were fierce.

Determined.

Real.

Not an illusion.

His heartbeat slowly steadied.

"No…"

The box pulsed.

Bright white light erupted.

BOOM!

The illusion shattered.

The air vibrated violently.

Li Wei's smile faded slightly.

"Interesting."

Emma helped Alex stand.

"You see now? The contract tries to break us mentally."

Alex nodded.

"Then we don't give it the chance."

Li Wei raised his sword again.

"Enough."

Behind him, dozens of cloaked fighters emerged from the shadows.

Their blades gleamed in the rain.

Emma exhaled slowly.

"Alex… we're surrounded."

Alex looked at the box.

The light inside it was growing stronger.

"Maybe that's exactly what we need."

Emma frowned.

"What?"

Alex stepped forward.

"If the contract feeds on doubt…"

He looked at her.

"Then we fight with trust."

Emma's expression softened slightly.

"You're learning fast."

Li Wei scoffed.

"How touching."

He pointed his blade.

"Kill them."

The fighters rushed forward.

The courtyard exploded into motion.

Emma moved first.

Her dagger cut through the first attacker's arm.

She spun, kicked another to the ground.

Alex swung the box.

Energy burst outward.

Two enemies flew across the courtyard.

Steel clashed.

Rain splashed.

Shouts echoed.

Emma fought like a storm.

Alex fought like a shield.

Every movement they made seemed synchronized.

Step.

Strike.

Block.

Counter.

Li Wei's eyes narrowed.

"They're moving together."

The betrayer nodded.

"The bond is stabilizing the box."

Li Wei's voice hardened.

"Then break it."

He rushed forward himself.

His sword sliced through the rain toward Alex.

CLANG!

Emma blocked the strike.

Their blades locked.

Li Wei leaned closer.

"You cannot win."

Emma pushed back.

"We already are."

Li Wei suddenly twisted his blade.

Emma stumbled.

Alex swung the box.

A burst of energy forced Li Wei backward.

The betrayer joined the fight.

Now it was two against two.

The courtyard shook with every clash.

Alex blocked a strike.

Emma countered another.

But the contract in the air began glowing brighter.

Alex looked up.

"It's reacting again."

Emma's eyes widened.

"That's not good."

The betrayer smiled.

"The final clause is activating."

The glowing scroll opened wider.

Golden symbols spread across the sky like cracks in glass.

Alex felt the pull again.

Stronger.

He could barely breathe.

Emma grabbed his arm.

"Alex! Stay with me!"

He forced himself to stand.

"What… is it doing?"

The betrayer answered calmly.

"It's deciding who controls the bond."

Emma's voice turned sharp.

"And if it decides against us?"

Li Wei grinned.

"Then your hearts belong to the contract forever."

Alex's grip tightened.

"No."

The box pulsed.

Emma looked at him.

"What are you thinking?"

Alex stepped forward.

"If the contract wants our hearts…"

He raised the box.

"Then it has to take them."

The light inside the box exploded.

A massive wave of energy shot upward.

The floating contract trembled.

The symbols flickered.

Li Wei's eyes widened.

"They're interfering with the contract!"

The betrayer frowned.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Emma stood beside Alex.

"Looks like we just changed the rules."

The storm above Liang City roared again.

Lightning cracked across the sky.

The glowing contract twisted violently in the air.

Something inside it had begun to break.

And everyone in the courtyard felt it.

Li Wei stepped back slowly.

"This… wasn't supposed to happen."

Emma raised her dagger.

"Get used to surprises."

Alex lifted the box higher.

The light grew brighter.

The final battle for the contract had begun.

And the result would decide the fate of their hearts.
