Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven: The Battle of Strength

The locker room of Golden Strikers was filled with noise after the hard-fought victory against Kaduna Stars.

Some players were shouting in excitement.

Others sat quietly, exhausted from the brutal match.

Sweat covered their bodies, and mud stained their jerseys.

Chinedu sat on a wooden bench, breathing heavily.

His ankle still hurt from the dangerous tackle earlier in the game, but he ignored the pain.

Winning had made it easier to forget.

Across the room, Tobi was talking with Musa and Kelvin.

For the first time since the tournament started, there was less tension between them.

The victory had forced them to trust each other.

But outside the locker room, something else was happening.

Something Chinedu didn't know yet.

Coach Adeyemi's Warning

Coach Adeyemi entered the locker room slowly.

The players immediately became quiet.

He looked at each of them carefully before speaking.

"You played well today," he said.

"But that match should teach you something."

The players listened closely.

"Football is not just talent. It is also strength. Discipline. And intelligence."

He paused.

"Kano Lions were fast. Kaduna Stars were strong."

He then pointed toward Chinedu and Tobi.

"You two controlled the midfield today."

Chinedu and Tobi exchanged a quick glance.

"But the next match will be even harder," the coach continued.

"The semi-final."

The word filled the room with excitement.

Semi-final.

They were now only two matches away from winning the entire tournament.

Coach Adeyemi continued.

"Our opponent will be Lagos Elite Academy."

Several players reacted immediately.

That academy was famous.

They had money.

Professional coaches.

And some of the best young players in the country.

"This match," Coach Adeyemi said seriously, "will be the toughest one yet."

The Shadow of Suspicion

Later that evening, the team returned to their hotel.

The atmosphere was calmer now.

Players were resting.

Some were watching football highlights on television.

Chinedu sat outside near the hotel garden.

The cool night air helped ease the pain in his ankle.

Suddenly, Tobi walked over and sat beside him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Tobi said quietly,

"I've been thinking about that message."

Chinedu knew exactly what he meant.

The online warning about Mr. Fernandez.

"Do you think it's true?" Chinedu asked.

Tobi shrugged.

"I don't know."

He looked toward the dark street outside the hotel.

"But something about him feels wrong."

Chinedu nodded slowly.

Fernandez had approached many players.

Made the same promises.

And always talked about moving quickly.

Too quickly.

"What if he's lying to everyone?" Chinedu asked.

Tobi sighed.

"Then a lot of players could lose everything."

A Late-Night Encounter

Just as they were about to return inside, a black SUV slowly stopped near the hotel entrance.

The door opened.

Mr. Fernandez stepped out.

Chinedu and Tobi immediately froze.

Fernandez noticed them and smiled.

"Ah, my two stars."

He walked toward them confidently.

"Congratulations on your victory today."

Neither of them responded immediately.

Fernandez continued speaking.

"The scouts were very impressed."

He turned toward Chinedu.

"Especially you."

Chinedu felt uncomfortable.

"What about the trials in Spain?" Fernandez asked.

Chinedu hesitated.

"I'm still thinking."

Fernandez nodded slowly.

"But remember, opportunities don't wait forever."

Then he looked at Tobi.

"You too have potential."

Tobi folded his arms.

"We'll decide after the tournament."

For a brief moment, Fernandez's smile faded.

But it quickly returned.

"Of course," he said calmly.

"Take your time."

Then he walked back to his car and drove away.

The moment he left, Tobi exhaled.

"That guy gives me bad vibes."

Chinedu agreed.

A New Scout Appears

The next morning, something unexpected happened during training.

While Golden Strikers practiced on the stadium pitch in Abuja, another visitor arrived.

This time, it wasn't Mr. Fernandez.

It was a tall woman wearing a navy blazer and sunglasses.

She stood quietly on the sidelines, watching the players carefully.

Coach Adeyemi noticed her immediately.

After training ended, she approached him.

Chinedu saw them talking.

The coach looked surprised.

Very surprised.

A few minutes later, Coach Adeyemi called Chinedu over.

"Someone wants to meet you."

Chinedu walked toward them nervously.

The woman removed her sunglasses and smiled politely.

"My name is Sarah Williams," she said.

"I'm a scout for a youth development program connected to clubs in England."

England?

Chinedu's heart skipped.

But this time something felt different.

She didn't talk about quick deals.

She didn't make dramatic promises.

Instead, she said something simple.

"I like how you read the game."

Coach Adeyemi nodded in agreement.

Sarah continued.

"I'll be watching the semi-final closely."

Then she handed Chinedu a small card.

"If you keep improving, we may invite you to a development camp next year."

Next year.

Not tomorrow.

Not immediately.

Next year.

For the first time, the offer felt real.

Professional.

Honest.

The Rivalry Evolves

Later that afternoon, Tobi approached Chinedu again.

"So… the English scout spoke to you."

Chinedu looked surprised.

"How do you know everything?"

Tobi laughed.

"Word travels fast in football."

Chinedu showed him the card.

Tobi read it carefully.

"Next year trials," he said.

"That sounds more realistic."

Then he looked at Chinedu seriously.

"Let's win this tournament first."

Chinedu nodded.

For the first time since they met…

The rivalry between them had transformed into something else.

A partnership.

Preparing for the Semi-Final

The next two days were intense.

Training became harder.

Coach Adeyemi studied Lagos Elite Academy's playing style carefully.

"They are fast," he explained.

"And they control possession very well."

He pointed to a tactical board.

"But every team has weaknesses."

He circled one area.

"Their defense leaves space during counterattacks."

Chinedu understood immediately.

Quick transitions.

Fast passes.

Smart movement.

If Golden Strikers played intelligently, they could win.

The Night Before the Semi-Final

That night, Chinedu stood alone outside the hotel again.

The tournament had already changed many things.

He had faced powerful teams.

Earned the respect of his teammates.

And attracted the attention of real scouts.

But danger still existed.

Mr. Fernandez was still around.

Still watching.

Still waiting.

Chinedu looked up at the night sky.

He remembered his small home in Ajegunle.

His mother.

His brother.

The rent they still owed.

Failure was not an option.

Tomorrow's semi-final would be the biggest match of his life so far.

And something deep inside him whispered a warning.

The tournament was about to reveal its biggest secret.

Wait as we uncovered the secrets in the next chapter....
