Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen: Return to Fire

The first touch felt unfamiliar.

Not because Chinedu had forgotten how to play…

But because everything now mattered more.

Back on the Pitch

The Golden Strikers training ground buzzed with energy.

It was Chinedu's first full session back.

All eyes were on him.

Coach Adeyemi stood with arms folded, watching silently.

"Don't rush," he said.

Chinedu nodded.

But inside…

He was already pushing himself.

The ball rolled toward him.

He controlled it.

Smooth.

Clean.

Then a short pass.

Accurate.

Simple.

Safe.

The players exchanged glances.

He was back.

But not yet at full speed.

Testing the Limits

The session intensified.

Small-sided games began.

Quick passing.

Tight spaces.

Pressure from every angle.

Chinedu moved carefully at first.

Reading the game.

Anticipating passes.

Using his mind more than his body.

Then the moment came.

A loose ball rolled into space.

Instinct took over.

He sprinted.

Full speed.

No hesitation.

His ankle held.

He reached the ball first and delivered a sharp pass that split the defense.

"Good!" Coach Adeyemi shouted.

Chinedu exhaled.

Confidence returned.

Step by step.

A New Chinedu

After training, Tobi walked over.

"You've changed," he said.

Chinedu raised an eyebrow.

"How?"

"You're calmer," Tobi replied.

"Smarter."

Chinedu smiled slightly.

"I had time to think."

Tobi nodded.

"That might be dangerous… for everyone else."

For the first time, there was no rivalry in his tone.

Only respect.

The League Begins

One week later, the National Elite Youth League kicked off.

Golden Strikers' first match was away.

Their opponent?

Abuja Titans Academy.

The same team from the final.

The same battlefield.

The same tension.

But this time…

It wasn't just about a trophy.

It was about dominance.

The Stadium of Pressure

The stadium was packed.

Word had spread.

People wanted to see the rematch.

Scouts filled the stands again.

Not just local ones.

International eyes were watching now.

And somewhere among them…

Unknown to the players…

Danger waited.

The Rivalry Rekindled

As the teams lined up, Chinedu's eyes locked with Khalid Bello.

No words were exchanged.

None were needed.

The message was clear.

This time… it ends differently.

The Match Explodes

From the first whistle, the intensity was brutal.

Hard tackles.

Fast transitions.

No space.

No mercy.

Abuja Titans attacked aggressively.

Khalid led the line like a predator.

Strong.

Relentless.

In the 15th minute, he broke through the defense.

Shot.

GOAL.

1 – 0.

The crowd erupted.

Khalid didn't celebrate wildly.

He simply looked at Chinedu.

A quiet statement.

The Response

Golden Strikers didn't panic.

Chinedu dropped deeper into midfield.

Controlling the tempo.

Slowing the game.

Thinking.

Then in the 28th minute—

He saw an opening.

A narrow gap between defenders.

He passed.

Perfect weight.

Perfect timing.

Tobi ran onto it.

Shot.

GOAL.

1 – 1.

Now it was Tobi's turn to look at Khalid.

The battle had truly begun.

The Sabotage

Halftime approached.

The score remained level.

Then something strange happened.

As Chinedu ran toward the sideline for a loose ball—

He slipped.

Hard.

He crashed to the ground.

Pain shot through his leg.

But this time…

It wasn't just his ankle.

The referee blew the whistle.

Chinedu looked down.

The grass beneath him felt… wrong.

Loose.

Uneven.

Almost like it had been tampered with.

Coach Adeyemi rushed forward.

"What happened?"

Chinedu winced.

"I slipped… but the ground—"

The coach's eyes narrowed.

Something wasn't right.

A Dangerous Realization

From the stands, a man lowered his binoculars.

Mr. Fernandez.

Watching.

Waiting.

Calculating.

"If he can't be signed…" he murmured.

"…he can be stopped."

Second Half Tension

Chinedu continued playing.

But now he was cautious.

Every step measured.

Every movement calculated.

The match grew more aggressive.

Fouls increased.

Tempers flared.

Then in the 70th minute—

Khalid struck again.

A powerful header.

GOAL.

2 – 1.

Abuja Titans led.

The crowd roared.

The Turning Point

Time was running out.

Golden Strikers pushed forward desperately.

Chinedu gathered the team.

"Stay calm," he said.

"We still have time."

Tobi looked at him.

"Then lead."

Chinedu nodded.

This was his moment.

The Equalizer

In the 85th minute—

Chinedu intercepted a pass.

He moved forward quickly.

One defender.

Two defenders.

He didn't panic.

He remembered everything he had studied.

Positioning.

Timing.

Decision-making.

Then—

A quick pass to Musa on the wing.

Cross into the box.

Bright jumped.

Header.

GOAL!

2 – 2.

The stadium erupted again.

The Final Seconds

The match was nearing its end.

But one last chance came.

A loose ball at the edge of the box.

Chinedu reached it.

So did Khalid.

Both players collided.

The ball bounced upward.

For a split second—

Everything slowed.

Chinedu jumped.

So did Khalid.

But this time—

Chinedu reacted faster.

He flicked the ball forward.

Tobi ran onto it.

Shot.

GOAL.

3 – 2.

Golden Strikers took the lead.

Victory… With a Warning

The final whistle blew.

Golden Strikers had won again.

But this victory felt different.

Harder.

Darker.

More dangerous.

Khalid stood still, breathing heavily.

Then he walked past Chinedu.

"This isn't over," he said quietly.

Chinedu nodded.

"I know."

The Truth Emerges

After the match, Coach Adeyemi spoke to the officials.

"The pitch was tampered with," he said firmly.

An investigation was already beginning.

And this time…

The truth would not stay hidden.

A Shadow War Begins

That night, Chinedu sat quietly in the locker room.

Victory should have felt good.

But something was wrong.

This was no longer just football.

It was becoming something else.

Something bigger.

Something dangerous.

And somewhere in the shadows…

Someone was pulling the strings.
