Chapter Six: Shadows Behind the Dream
The night after Golden Strikers' first victory at the National Youth Tournament was supposed to be a moment of celebration.
But for Chinedu Okafor, sleep refused to come.
He lay on the narrow hotel bed in their team lodge in Abuja, staring at the ceiling fan slowly turning above him.
His mind was full.
The tournament.
The scouts.
Mr. Fernandez.
And the way those European men had watched him during the match.
Across the room, Musa snored loudly.
But Chinedu remained awake.
Something told him that the next few days could change his entire life.
The Morning After
The next morning, the team gathered in the hotel restaurant for breakfast.
Some players were excited, laughing about yesterday's match.
Others were nervous about the next round.
Coach Adeyemi walked in carrying a small notebook.
"Good morning, champions," he said calmly.
The boys responded with sleepy greetings.
"Today will be recovery training," he continued. "But tomorrow's match will be harder."
The room suddenly became quiet.
"Your next opponent is Kaduna Stars Academy."
Several players exchanged worried looks.
Kaduna Stars were known for producing extremely physical players.
They played rough.
Very rough.
Coach Adeyemi continued.
"They defeated their last opponent 4–0."
Now the tension was real.
A Strange Invitation
After breakfast, Chinedu stepped outside the hotel for fresh air.
The Abuja morning sun was already rising.
As he stood near the entrance, someone called his name.
"Chinedu."
He turned.
Mr. Fernandez stood near a black SUV.
But this time, he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood a tall white man with grey hair and sharp blue eyes.
Fernandez smiled.
"I'd like you to meet someone."
The man stepped forward and extended his hand.
"My name is Mr. Antonio Ruiz," he said with a Spanish accent.
"I work with a youth development club in Spain."
Chinedu's heart began beating faster.
Spain again.
Ruiz studied him carefully.
"I watched your game yesterday," he said. "Your football intelligence is impressive."
Chinedu didn't know what to say.
"Thank you, sir."
Ruiz nodded.
"But talent alone is not enough."
Fernandez added smoothly, "That is why we want to watch you again in the next match."
Chinedu felt excitement and pressure at the same time.
Ruiz continued.
"If you perform well during this tournament… we may invite you for trials in Spain."
The words felt heavy.
Real.
Close.
Too close.
Coach Adeyemi Finds Out
Later that afternoon during training, Coach Adeyemi called Chinedu aside.
"I heard you met the scout again."
Chinedu looked surprised.
"How did you—"
"Word travels quickly."
The coach crossed his arms.
"What did they say?"
Chinedu explained everything.
Spain.
Trials.
Watching the next match.
Coach Adeyemi listened quietly.
Then he sighed.
"This tournament is dangerous for young players."
Chinedu frowned.
"Dangerous?"
"Yes."
The coach pointed toward the stadium in the distance.
"Some agents care about development."
He paused.
"Others only care about profit."
Chinedu thought about Fernandez again.
The way he always appeared suddenly.
The way he talked about moving quickly.
Something still felt strange.
Tobi's Secret
That evening, something unexpected happened.
Tobi knocked on Chinedu's hotel room door.
Chinedu opened it slowly.
"What do you want?"
Tobi looked serious.
"I need to tell you something."
Chinedu folded his arms.
"I'm listening."
Tobi stepped inside.
"I spoke with Mr. Fernandez yesterday."
Chinedu's eyes widened.
"You too?"
Tobi nodded.
"He promised me the same thing."
Spain.
Trials.
European clubs.
Chinedu felt confused.
"Why would he promise both of us?"
Tobi shook his head.
"That's the problem."
He leaned closer.
"I don't think he's telling the full truth."
Chinedu's stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?"
Tobi lowered his voice.
"I heard two other players from another academy saying the same thing."
Now Chinedu felt uneasy.
"How many players has he promised?"
Tobi answered quietly.
"Maybe too many."
The Investigation
The next day, before their next match, Chinedu and Tobi walked around the tournament grounds.
They quietly asked other players about Mr. Fernandez.
And slowly…
A disturbing story began to appear.
Several players from different teams had been approached by the same man.
All of them were promised trials in Europe.
All of them were told to move quickly.
One player even said Fernandez asked his family for "processing fees."
Chinedu felt anger rising inside him.
Was this man using their dreams?
Was he lying to desperate young players?
Tobi looked at him.
"We need to be careful."
Chinedu nodded slowly.
Match Day Pressure
Soon it was time for the next match.
Golden Strikers vs Kaduna Stars.
The stadium was even more crowded today.
More scouts had arrived.
More agents.
More opportunities.
But now Chinedu's mind was clearer.
He knew something important.
He would not allow anyone to use his dream.
He would earn his future the right way.
Through football.
Not empty promises.
Inside the locker room, Coach Adeyemi spoke firmly.
"Kaduna Stars will play aggressively."
He pointed at the board.
"They will try to intimidate you."
He looked directly at Chinedu and Tobi.
"But remember something."
The room became silent.
"Talent is powerful."
He paused.
"But character is stronger."
The players nodded.
The whistle from the stadium echoed through the hallway.
It was time.
The Storm Begins
The teams walked onto the pitch.
The crowd roared loudly.
Kaduna Stars looked bigger.
Stronger.
More aggressive.
One of their defenders even cracked his knuckles while staring at Chinedu.
But Chinedu didn't feel afraid anymore.
Instead…
He felt focused.
In the VIP section, Mr. Fernandez and Mr. Ruiz were already watching.
Waiting.
Judging.
But this time, Chinedu wasn't playing for them.
He was playing for his family.
For Ajegunle.
For the future he would build himself.
The referee blew the whistle.
The match began.
And within seconds…
The first brutal tackle crashed into Chinedu.
The tournament had just entered its most dangerous stage.
Watch out for chapter seven ...
The brutal match against Kaduna Stars
A shocking injury on the field
