Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight:

The Contract of Shadows

The celebration lasted long into the night.

Golden Strikers players filled the hotel lobby with laughter, music, and loud arguments about who had played the best during the semi-final.

For a few hours, the pressure of the tournament disappeared.

They were finalists.

One more match.

Just one.

But for Chinedu Okafor, the celebration felt distant.

He sat quietly near the balcony outside the hotel, an ice pack wrapped around his ankle.

The pain had grown worse since the match ended.

Yet the physical pain was not what troubled him the most.

Something else bothered him.

Something darker.

Across the parking lot, under the dim streetlight, he saw a familiar black SUV slowly drive away.

Mr. Fernandez.

Again.

Watching.

Waiting.

The Late-Night Knock

Around midnight, when most of the players had already gone to sleep, a soft knock came on Chinedu's hotel room door.

Musa was snoring loudly on the other bed.

Chinedu stood up carefully and opened the door.

Tobi stood there.

But this time he looked serious.

More serious than Chinedu had ever seen him.

"We need to talk," Tobi whispered.

Chinedu stepped aside and let him in.

Tobi closed the door behind him.

Then he pulled out his phone.

"What I'm about to show you…" he said quietly, "…might change everything."

The Message

Tobi handed the phone to him.

On the screen was a photograph.

A document.

A contract.

Chinedu frowned as he read the title.

"International Youth Player Transfer Agreement."

His eyes widened.

"What is this?"

Tobi crossed his arms.

"I got it from one of the players from Port Harcourt Academy."

Chinedu kept reading.

The contract promised trials in Spain.

Professional training.

European exposure.

Everything Mr. Fernandez had been talking about.

But the deeper Chinedu read…

The worse it became.

Hidden inside the small print were shocking conditions.

The player must sign exclusive representation rights to Fernandez's agency.

If the player failed trials, the agency would not be responsible for accommodation or return travel.

The player must pay processing and travel fees before departure.

Chinedu looked up slowly.

"This is a trap."

Tobi nodded.

"Exactly."

Chinedu clenched his fists.

"How many players has he tricked with this?"

Tobi answered quietly.

"Too many."

The Dark Truth

Tobi continued speaking.

"That player from Port Harcourt told me something else."

Chinedu listened carefully.

"Two years ago, his cousin signed a similar contract."

Chinedu's stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

Tobi looked directly at him.

"He went to Europe."

For a moment, hope appeared.

But Tobi finished the sentence slowly.

"And he never came back."

The room went silent.

"What do you mean?" Chinedu asked.

Tobi sighed.

"The trials failed. The agent disappeared. The boy was stranded in a foreign country with no money and no help."

Chinedu felt cold.

His dream.

The dream of Europe.

Could easily become a nightmare.

The Trap Tightens

Just then—

Chinedu's phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Both boys stared at it.

Chinedu answered carefully.

"Hello?"

The voice that responded was calm.

Smooth.

Dangerous.

"Good evening, Chinedu."

It was Mr. Fernandez.

Chinedu's grip tightened.

"Congratulations on your semi-final performance."

"Thank you."

Fernandez continued.

"The scouts were very impressed."

Tobi rolled his eyes silently.

Then Fernandez said something that made Chinedu freeze.

"I have already prepared the paperwork for your European trial."

Paperwork.

Already.

Chinedu glanced at Tobi.

Their suspicions were becoming real.

Fernandez continued.

"After the final match tomorrow, we must move quickly."

"How quickly?" Chinedu asked.

"Within one week."

One week.

Everything felt rushed again.

Just like Coach Adeyemi had warned.

A Dangerous Choice

After the call ended, Chinedu sat down slowly.

Tobi spoke first.

"So?"

Chinedu looked at the contract photo again.

Then he said firmly:

"I'm not signing anything."

Tobi smiled slightly.

"Good."

But Chinedu continued.

"Not until I know the truth."

Tobi raised an eyebrow.

"What are you planning?"

Chinedu's eyes hardened.

"We expose him."

A New Ally

The next morning, before training, Chinedu walked toward the stadium alone.

He knew exactly who he needed to speak to.

Near the sideline, Sarah Williams was already watching warmups.

She noticed him approaching.

"Good morning, Chinedu."

"Good morning, ma."

He hesitated for a moment.

Then he told her everything.

The promises.

The contract.

The suspicious clauses.

The players who disappeared.

Sarah's calm expression slowly changed.

Her eyes narrowed.

"May I see the contract?"

Chinedu handed her Tobi's phone.

She read it carefully.

Very carefully.

When she finished, she sighed.

"I was afraid of this."

Chinedu's heart raced.

"You know him?"

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Then she said something shocking.

"Several football associations have been investigating Mr. Fernandez for years."

Chinedu's jaw dropped.

"What?"

"He moves between tournaments recruiting desperate players."

Sarah crossed her arms.

"Most of the contracts are legal… but extremely dangerous for young athletes."

Chinedu felt anger rising again.

"So what do we do?"

Sarah looked toward the stadium.

Where scouts, agents, and coaches were beginning to arrive.

"We catch him."

The Final Approaches

Later that day, Golden Strikers gathered for their final tactical meeting.

Tomorrow would be the biggest match of the tournament.

The National Youth Championship Final.

Golden Strikers vs Abuja Titans Academy.

A team known for powerful attackers and dangerous counterattacks.

Coach Adeyemi spoke with intensity.

"This final will define you."

He looked at Chinedu and Tobi.

"Control the midfield."

They nodded.

But Chinedu's mind carried another mission now.

Expose Fernandez.

Protect young players.

And still win the biggest match of his life.

A Suspicious Meeting

That evening, Chinedu saw something alarming.

Near the VIP section, Mr. Fernandez was speaking with several young players from different teams.

Showing them documents.

Talking quickly.

Smiling.

Selling dreams.

Just like he tried with him.

But this time—

Chinedu was ready.

Because tomorrow…

In front of scouts, coaches, and officials…

The truth would finally come out.

One Final Night

Back at the hotel, the players tried to sleep early.

Tomorrow was the final.

But Chinedu remained awake again.

Standing outside under the quiet Abuja sky.

Tobi joined him.

"You look serious."

Chinedu nodded.

"Tomorrow we win the tournament."

"And expose Fernandez."

Tobi smiled slightly.

"Big day."

Chinedu looked up at the stars.

For the first time since this journey began…

He understood something clearly.

Football was not just about skill.

It was about character.

And tomorrow…

Both would be tested.
