Chapter 5 - The National Tournament

Chapter Five

The morning air was cool when the Golden Strikers team bus left Lagos.

For many of the players, this was the first time they were traveling outside the city for football.

But for Chinedu, it felt like the beginning of something much bigger.

The National Youth Football Tournament was not just another competition. Scouts from different countries would attend. Clubs from across Nigeria would send their best young players.

This was where careers were made.

Or destroyed.

Chinedu sat by the window of the bus as the city slowly disappeared behind them.

Beside him, his teammate Musa was already asleep, his head shaking with every bump in the road.

Across the aisle, Tobi sat quietly with his headphones on.

He did not look at Chinedu.

But the tension between them was still there.

Coach Adeyemi stood at the front of the bus.

"Listen carefully," he said loudly. "When we reach Abuja, there will be many distractions. Agents, scouts, reporters. But remember one thing."

He paused.

"You are here to play football."

The team nodded.

But Chinedu knew it wouldn't be that simple.

Arrival in Abuja

After hours of traveling, the team finally arrived in Abuja.

For some of the boys, the city felt completely different from Lagos.

Wide roads.

Tall buildings.

Clean streets.

And the stadium…

It was huge.

When the bus stopped outside the National Stadium, the players stared in amazement.

Chinedu stepped down slowly, his heart beating fast.

This stadium had hosted major competitions before.

Now he was standing in front of it.

Coach Adeyemi clapped his hands.

"Don't stand there like tourists! Move!"

The players quickly grabbed their bags and walked toward the locker rooms.

Inside the stadium, the noise of other teams training echoed everywhere.

This was serious competition.

The First Training Session

Golden Strikers' first practice session in Abuja was intense.

Coach Adeyemi wanted to test the players one last time before their first match.

"Speed drill!" he shouted.

The boys sprinted across the pitch again and again.

Chinedu pushed himself harder than ever.

His ankle still hurt sometimes, but he refused to slow down.

Across the field, Tobi was also playing aggressively.

Both of them knew the truth.

Only one of them might become the star of the tournament.

During a small practice match, Chinedu received the ball near midfield.

Two defenders rushed him.

He quickly turned, dribbled past one, and sent a long pass toward Musa.

Musa controlled it and scored.

Coach Adeyemi nodded slightly.

"Good vision."

But Tobi didn't look impressed.

The Scouts Arrive

Later that afternoon, the stadium became busier.

Cars began arriving one after another.

Luxury cars.

Foreign cars.

Men in suits stepped out and walked toward the VIP section.

Scouts.

Agents.

Club representatives.

Chinedu felt nervous watching them.

Some of them were speaking foreign languages.

Some were writing notes.

And then he saw a familiar face.

Mr. Fernandez.

Standing beside two men who looked European.

Fernandez saw him and gave a small smile.

Chinedu quickly looked away.

Coach Adeyemi noticed.

"Focus on football," he said quietly.

"Yes sir."

But the pressure was growing.

The First Match

The next morning, Golden Strikers prepared for their first match of the tournament.

Their opponent was Kano Lions Academy.

The stadium seats were already filling with spectators.

Drums.

Whistles.

Fans shouting.

It felt like a professional match.

Inside the locker room, Coach Adeyemi spoke firmly.

"This tournament will test your character."

He pointed at the team sheet.

"Starting lineup."

The boys held their breath.

"Goalkeeper – Sadiq."

"Defenders – Ibrahim, David, Musa, and Emeka."

"Midfield – Chinedu and Tobi."

Both of them looked up.

Coach Adeyemi continued.

"Forwards – Kelvin, Sola, and Bright."

Chinedu felt relief.

He was starting.

But playing in the same midfield with Tobi could be dangerous.

The coach looked at both of them.

"You two must work together."

Neither of them responded.

Kickoff

The whistle blew.

The match began.

Kano Lions started aggressively.

Their players were strong and fast.

Within the first five minutes, they nearly scored.

The Golden Strikers goalkeeper made a brilliant save.

Chinedu received the ball in midfield and tried to control the tempo.

But the pressure was intense.

Two defenders surrounded him.

He quickly passed to Tobi.

For a moment, Tobi hesitated.

Then he dribbled forward and shot.

The ball flew over the crossbar.

The crowd groaned.

Chinedu ran back to defend.

Despite their rivalry, they needed each other.

A Brilliant Moment

Midway through the first half, Chinedu saw an opportunity.

Kelvin was making a run behind the defense.

Without hesitation, Chinedu delivered a perfect through pass.

Kelvin ran onto the ball and struck it hard.

GOAL.

Golden Strikers 1 – 0 Kano Lions.

The crowd cheered.

Chinedu raised his hands briefly.

In the VIP section, several scouts wrote notes.

Including the Europeans standing beside Mr. Fernandez.

Trouble Begins

But the match soon became rough.

Kano Lions were frustrated.

Their defenders began tackling harder.

During one play, Chinedu received a heavy push from behind.

He fell hard.

The referee blew the whistle.

Tobi helped him up.

"Careful," Tobi said quietly.

Chinedu looked surprised.

For the first time, Tobi seemed serious.

Maybe the tournament had changed something.

Or maybe the pressure had changed both of them.

The Equalizer

Near the end of the first half, disaster struck.

A defensive mistake allowed Kano Lions' striker to break free.

One powerful shot.

GOAL.

1 – 1.

The stadium exploded with noise.

Coach Adeyemi shouted instructions from the sideline.

Golden Strikers needed to respond.

Second Half Drama

The second half began with even more intensity.

Both teams attacked constantly.

Chinedu controlled the midfield, passing quickly and organizing the team.

Tobi began playing better too.

Their rivalry slowly turned into cooperation.

Then, in the 78th minute, the moment arrived.

Chinedu intercepted a pass.

He dribbled past one player.

Then another.

He saw Tobi running toward the box.

For a split second, he hesitated.

Should he pass?

Or shoot himself?

The defenders were closing in.

Finally, he passed.

Tobi controlled the ball and fired a powerful shot.

GOAL.

Golden Strikers 2 – 1.

The stadium erupted.

Tobi ran toward Chinedu and raised his hand.

After a second of hesitation…

Chinedu high-fived him.

For now, they were teammates.

After the Match

When the final whistle blew, Golden Strikers had won their first match.

The players celebrated loudly.

But Coach Adeyemi quickly gathered them.

"Good start," he said. "But the tournament has only begun."

Meanwhile, in the VIP section, Mr. Fernandez was speaking to the European scouts again.

One of them nodded slowly.

They were clearly interested.

Chinedu didn't know exactly what they were saying.

But he had a strong feeling.

This tournament…

Could change his life foreve.
