Chapter 23 - Chapter23:The Aftermath

# Chapter 23: The Aftermath

The Elder Hall was quiet. The air was heavy. It smelled of incense. It smelled of old wood. It smelled of fear. The elders sat in a circle. They wore long robes. They were gray. They were blue. They were black. They looked at Lin Yu. They looked at Chen. Chen was on his knees. He was tied up. He was shaking. His robes were torn. His face was pale. His veins were still black. The blood cultivation was still in him. It was fading. But it was visible.

The Sect Master sat at the top. He was old. His beard was white. His eyes were sharp. He was healthy now. The poison was gone. Lin Yu's antidote worked. The Master looked at Chen. He looked at Elder Chen. Elder Chen was there too. He was stripped of his robes. He wore gray servant clothes. He looked down. He did not speak. He knew he was finished.

"Chen Zhi," the Master said. His voice was loud. It echoed. "You used forbidden arts. You killed a sect member. You betrayed the sect. What is your plea?"

Chen did not answer. He looked at Lin Yu. His eyes were full of hate. But it was weak. It was desperate. "He forced me," Chen whispered. "He pushed me. He humiliated me."

"Silence," the Master said. "You are responsible for your actions. No one forced you. You chose the dark path."

The Master looked at the elders. "What is the judgment?"

"Death," one elder said.

"Exile," another said.

"Life imprisonment," a third said.

The Master thought. He looked at Lin Yu. "Lin Yu. You caught him. You brought the evidence. What do you suggest?"

Lin Yu stood still. He did not move. He did not smile. He was calm. "Death is too easy," Lin Yu said. "He killed a servant. He used blood. He worked with outsiders. If we kill him, the outsiders will not know. If we exile him, he will come back. He should be imprisoned. In the Dark Vault. Where no one can hear him. Where no one can help him."

The Master nodded. "Wisdom. Very well. Chen Zhi. You are sentenced to the Dark Vault. For life. You will never see the sun again. You will never cultivate again. Your meridians will be sealed."

Chen screamed. It was a weak sound. "No! Kill me! Do not lock me up! Kill me!"

The guards moved. They dragged him away. He kicked. He shouted. But he was weak. The seals were placed. His Qi vanished. He was mortal now. He was nothing. He was taken away. The doors closed. The sound faded.

Elder Chen was next. He looked up. He looked at Lin Yu. "You think you won?" he said. His voice was low. "You think this is over? You have no idea. You have made enemies. Big enemies. They will come. They will burn this sect. They will burn you."

"Take him away," the Master said. He was tired. "Same judgment. Dark Vault."

Elder Chen was dragged away. He did not scream. He just laughed. It was a dry laugh. It was cold. It echoed in the hall. Lin Yu listened. He remembered the laugh. He would hear it in his dreams. But he did not show fear. He stood straight.

The Master stood up. He walked down. He stopped in front of Lin Yu. He looked at him. He smiled. It was a small smile. But it was real. "You saved the sect," the Master said. "You saved me. You are a hero."

"I am a disciple," Lin Yu said. "I did my duty."

"Modesty," the Master said. "Good. But rewards are necessary. From now on, you are a Core Disciple. You have access to the Core Library. You have access to the Spirit Mountain. You have a monthly stipend of 1000 spirit stones."

Lin Yu bowed. "Thank you, Master."

"And take this," the Master said. He gave a box. It was small. It was made of jade. "It is a protection talisman. It will block one fatal attack. Use it wisely. Do not waste it."

Lin Yu took it. It was warm. It pulsed. It was valuable. "I will not waste it."

"Rest now," the Master said. "You have done enough. The sect will heal. But be careful. Elder Chen's words... they were not empty. There are forces outside. We must be ready."

"I will be ready," Lin Yu said.

Lin Yu turned. He walked out of the hall. The sun was setting. The sky was orange. The air was cool. He breathed deep. He felt lighter. The burden was gone. Chen was gone. But the Master was right. The enemies were not gone. They were just hidden.

He walked to his room. It was in the Inner Sect. It was quiet. He locked the door. He sat on the bed. He took out the Sword Box. It was in his mind. But he could feel it. It was humming.

[Quest Complete.] The Sword Box voice spoke. It was clear. It was calm. [Arc 1 Complete. Sect Survival. Energy Gained: 1000. Current Energy: 3040. Status Updated: Core Disciple.]

"1000 energy," Lin Yu thought. "It is a lot."

[Yes. Major arc completion gives high energy. You did well. But the threat is real. Elder Chen contacted the Beast Tamer Guild. They know you are here.]

"I know," Lin Yu thought. "I heard the laugh. I felt the hate. They will come."

[Yes. But you are stronger now. You are Level 4. You have four swords. Silent Edge. Flame Fang. Wind Dancer. Thunder Strike. You are balanced.]

"Not strong enough," Lin Yu thought. "The Guild Master is Level 8. Maybe Level 9. I need to grow. I need to leave."

[Leave the sect?]

"Yes. The sect is safe for now. But I am a target. If I stay, they will attack the sect to get to me. If I leave, I can draw them out. I can fight on my terms."

[Recommendation: Agrees. Mobility increases survival. But prepare first. You need supplies. You need information.]

"I will prepare," Lin Yu thought.

He stood up. He walked to the window. He looked out. He saw the servant quarters. He saw the kitchen. He thought about Mei Ling. She was waiting. He had promised to come back. He had promised to be safe.

He left the room. He walked to the kitchen. It was evening. The servants were cleaning. They were tired. They saw him. They bowed. They respected him. He was the hero. He was the Core Disciple. But he did not feel different. He was still Lin Yu.

He found Mei Ling. She was at the back. She was washing dishes. Her hands were wet. Her sleeves were rolled up. She looked up. She saw him. She stopped. She dried her hands. She walked to him.

"You are here," she said. Her voice was soft. "I heard the news. Chen is gone."

"Yes," Lin Yu said. "He is gone. He is in the Dark Vault."

"And you?" she asked. She looked at his clothes. She looked at his face. "Are you hurt?"

"No," Lin Yu said. "I am safe."

Mei Ling let out a breath. She smiled. It was a big smile. It was bright. "I was worried. The elders were arguing. I heard shouting. I thought... I thought you were in trouble."

"I was," Lin Yu said. "But I am out now."

Mei Ling reached into her pocket. She took out a small pouch. "I made this. For you. It is dumplings. Your favorite. I saved them. They are still warm."

Lin Yu took the pouch. It was warm. It smelled like meat. It smelled like home. "Thank you," he said. He was touched. He did not show it. But he felt it.

"Eat," she said. "You need energy. You fought hard."

"I will eat," Lin Yu said. He paused. "Mei Ling. I need to tell you something."

She looked at him. Her eyes were serious. "What is it?"

"I am leaving," Lin Yu said. "Soon. Maybe in a week. Maybe in a month. The sect is not safe for me. The enemies are too big. I need to grow stronger. I need to draw them away."

Mei Ling's face changed. She was sad. But she did not cry. She was strong. "I knew it," she said. "You are a eagle. You cannot stay in a cage. You need to fly."

"I will come back," Lin Yu said. "I promise."

"I know," she said. "I will wait. I will be here. I will keep your room safe. I will keep your secrets safe."

"Take this," Lin Yu said. He gave her the jade token. It was his Core Disciple token. "It gives you access to the Inner Sect. You can visit the library. You can learn. You can cultivate. Do not stay a servant forever. Grow stronger. So when I come back, you can stand beside me. Not behind me."

Mei Ling took the token. It was green. It glowed. She looked at it. She looked at him. Her eyes were wet. "I will," she said. "I will not be weak. I will not be a burden."

"You are not a burden," Lin Yu said. "You are my anchor. But I need you to be safe. So train. Use the token. Learn."

"I will," she said. She put the token away. She touched his arm. "Be careful. The world is big. It is dangerous. Do not trust everyone."

"I will not," Lin Yu said. "But I will trust you."

Mei Ling smiled. She stepped back. "Go. Eat your dumplings. Rest. You have a big journey ahead."

Lin Yu nodded. He turned. He walked away. He did not look back. He knew she was watching. He knew she was crying. But he could not stop. He had to go. He had to grow.

He went back to his room. He locked the door. He ate the dumplings. They were good. They were salty. They were full of meat. He ate all of them. He felt full. He felt warm.

He sat on the bed. He meditated. He circulated his Qi. He was Level 4. He was close to Level 5. He needed to break through. But not yet. He needed to stabilize. He needed to prepare.

[System Notification.] The Sword Box said. [New Quest Available. Prepare for Departure. Objective: Gather Supplies. Learn Travel Skills. Say Goodbye. Reward: 500 Energy.]

"Accept," Lin Yu thought.

[Confirmed. Quest Active.]

Lin Yu opened his eyes. He looked at the map. It was on the table. It showed the continent. It showed the Capital. It showed the Ancient Land. It showed the Beast Tamer Guild bases. He marked the bases. He marked the safe zones. He marked the dangerous zones.

He checked his bag. He had pills. He had food. He had traps. He had the protection talisman. He had the swords. He needed more. He needed flight tools. He needed communication crystals. He needed money.

He had 1000 spirit stones stipend. He had savings. He had loot from Chen. He was rich. For now. He would buy what he needed tomorrow.

He lay down. He closed his eyes. He slept. He did not dream. He rested deeply.

In the morning, the bell rang. It was loud. It echoed. Lin Yu woke up. He washed his face. He put on his Core Disciple robes. They were blue. They were silk. They had gold trim. They felt expensive. He put on his shoes. He tied them tight. He checked his bag. Everything was there.

He opened the door. He walked out. The air was fresh. The sun was rising. Other disciples were walking. They looked at him. They bowed. They respected him. He was a Core Disciple. He was a hero. But he did not care. He walked to the Mission Hall. He needed to cash in his contributions. He needed money.

He reached the hall. The clerk was there. He was the same clerk. He looked at Lin Yu. He was scared. He remembered Lin Yu. He remembered the evidence. He remembered the arrest.

"Core Disciple Lin," the clerk said. He bowed. "How can I help?"

"I want to cash in my points," Lin Yu said. "All of them."

The clerk nodded. He calculated. "You have 5000 points. That is 5000 spirit stones. Plus your stipend. Total 6000 spirit stones."

"Transfer it to my card," Lin Yu said. He gave his card. It was blue. It was core level.

The clerk transferred it. "Done. Is there anything else?"

"Yes," Lin Yu said. "I need flight tools. Two. I need communication crystals. Five. I need storage bags. Three."

The clerk brought them. He put them on the counter. "Here. High quality. For Core Disciples."

Lin Yu paid. He took them. He checked them. They were good. He put them in his bag. He turned. He walked out.

He went to the library. He needed information. He needed travel skills. He needed maps. He spent the day there. He read. He copied. He learned. He learned about the Capital. He learned about the Guild. He learned about the Ancient Land.

He came back at night. He was tired. He sat on the bed. He looked at the Sword Box.

"Preparation complete," Lin Yu thought.

[Yes. You are ready. But one thing remains. The Past Life Memory. It is surfacing. You need to be ready for it.]

"When?" Lin Yu thought.

"Soon," the Box said. "When you leave the sect. The change in environment will trigger it. Be careful. It will be painful."

"I can handle pain," Lin Yu said.

[I know. You are strong. But memory is not physical. It is mental. It can break you. Do not fight it. Let it flow.]

"I will," Lin Yu said.

Lin Yu stood up. He walked to the window. He looked at the stars. They were bright. They were far. He thought about his past life. He thought about the betrayal. He thought about the death. He thought about the rebirth. It was a long journey. But it was just beginning.

He touched the protection talisman. It was warm. He touched the Sword Box. It was humming. He touched his heart. It was beating. He was alive. He was strong. He was ready.

"Tomorrow," Lin Yu said. "I will say goodbye. Then I will leave."

[Understood. Quest Update: Say Goodbye. Completion: 0%.]

Lin Yu smiled. It was a small smile. But it was real. He was not alone. He had the Box. He had Mei Ling. He had his swords. He had his will. He would not fail. He would not die. He would win.

The night was quiet. The sect was sleeping. But Lin Yu was awake. He was planning. He was preparing. He was hunting. The prey was out there. The Guild. The Past Life Enemy. They were waiting. But so was he.

He lay down. He closed his eyes. He slept. He dreamed of swords. He dreamed of fire. He dreamed of a green scarf. He dreamed of home. He dreamed of victory.

The sun rose. The new day began. The day of departure. The day of change. The day of the next step. Lin Yu woke up. He was ready. He washed his face. He packed his bag. He put on his cloak. He hid his robes. He looked like a traveler. He looked like a mercenary. He did not look like a Core Disciple. It was better. Less attention.

He walked to the kitchen. He saw Mei Ling. She was there. She was waiting. She had a basket. She had food. She had water. She had clothes. She had everything.

"You are leaving," she said. It was not a question.

"Yes," Lin Yu said.

"Take this," she said. She gave him the basket. "It is for the road. Do not eat dry meat only. Eat vegetables. Eat fruit. Stay healthy."

"I will," Lin Yu said. He took the basket. He put it in his storage bag.

"And this," she said. She gave him the green scarf. "It is lucky. Wear it. So you remember me. So you remember to come back."

Lin Yu took the scarf. It was soft. It was green. It smelled like her. He put it around his neck. He tucked it in. It was close to his heart. "I will remember."

"Go," she said. Her voice was shaking. "Before I cry. Before I stop you."

Lin Yu nodded. He turned. He walked away. He did not look back. He walked to the gate. He showed his token. The guards let him pass. They did not know he was leaving. They thought he was on a mission. It was better. No questions. No goodbyes.

He walked out. He was outside. The wild was in front. The sky was blue. The wind was blowing. He took a deep breath. He was free. He was alone. But he was not lonely. He had the Sword Box. He had the path. He had the future.

[Quest Complete. Say Goodbye. Reward: 500 Energy. Current Energy: 3540.]

"Good," Lin Yu thought. "Now we hunt."

He started walking. He did not run. He walked steadily. He was not in a hurry. He had time. He had power. He had purpose. He walked into the light. He walked into the danger. He walked into his destiny. The path was long. The road was hard. But he had no choice. He had to walk. He had to fight. He had to win. Because losing meant death. And Lin Yu had already died once. He would not die again.

He touched the scarf. It was smooth. It was safe. He hoped he would not need it. But it was good to have. Allies were rare. Trust was rarer. He would keep both safe.

He walked on. The mist parted. The path was clear. The beasts hid. They smelled his power. They smelled his intent. They knew he was not prey. He was a predator. And the world was his hunting ground. The wind blew. It carried the scent of snow. It carried the scent of iron. It carried the scent of blood. Lin Yu breathed it in. It tasted like victory. It tasted like revenge.

"Come," Lin Yu said. "I am waiting."

He disappeared into the trees. He was gone. The forest swallowed him. But he would emerge. Stronger. Faster. Deadlier. The story was just beginning. The first arc was over. The real story was starting now. Lin Yu walked. He did not look back. He looked forward. He looked at the Capital. He looked at the sky. He looked at the future. And he smiled. It was a small smile. But it was real. He was alive. And that was enough. For now.
