Lyra.
We barely escaped.
He carried me through collapsing undergrowth, leaping fallen trees and cracked earth until we reached a cliff overlooking a glowing silver lake. Moonlight poured over the water, making it shimmer like liquid starlight. I gasped, my chest heaving from exhaustion, adrenaline, and lingering fear.
My legs gave out. He caught me instantly, his arms a fortress around me.
"You need strength," he murmured, golden eyes locking onto mine.
"And protection stronger than a bond."
"What are you saying?"
I whispered, fear and curiosity tangling inside me.
He took my hands, rough and warm, and his claws brushed mine.
"Blood oath."
A shiver ran down my spine.
"That's permanent," I said, voice trembling.
"So is death," he replied calmly, the weight of his words sinking into me. The wind whipped around us, tugging at my hair, carrying whispers of the forest. The moon pulsed brighter, casting silver light across the lake, reflecting like shards of starlight on water.
"If I do this," I whispered, "there's no turning back."
His golden eyes softened, burning with intensity and something else possessiveness, desire, a fierce devotion. "There never was," he said.
He drew a claw across his palm.
Dark blood welled, thick and almost glowing. Power radiated from him, rippling through the air, setting the leaves and mist around us alive with energy.
My turn. I hesitated, hand shaking as I drew my own blood, pain flaring as warmth spread through my veins.
Our hands pressed together.
Fire and shadow erupted around us, twisting and coiling like living serpents.
Energy tore through my body, pure and raw, lancing through my spine and heart. My scream echoed across the cliffs, carried by the wind, mingling with the roar of the lake.
I could feel him inside me not just in touch, but in pulse, in thought, in instinct.
The bond deepened beyond flesh, beyond soul, entwining our powers, hearts, and fates.
"I swear," I gasped, barely catching my breath.
"I swear," he growled, molten and resonant, the sound vibrating through my chest.
The lake below us erupted. Water spouted like geysers, moonlight reflecting off scales and shadows. A monstrous shape burst from the depths, wings unfurling wide enough to blot out the stars, fangs dripping darkness, eyes molten red and burning with hunger.
The ground beneath our feet cracked under the force of its roar.
The Dark Alpha tightened his hold on me, golden eyes fierce, shadow coiling around him like living armor.
"This is what I meant," he said, voice low but steady, "protection stronger than a bond."
I swallowed, feeling the surge of power between us, the lake thrumming with anticipation. Fire and shadow wrapped around my limbs, responding to his energy. The monster lunged, water crashing around us, wings snapping through the air, claws slicing the mist.
And in that moment, I realized: the Blood Oath didn't just bind us to each other.it had awakened something ancient, something primal inside both of us. We were no longer just bonded mates.
We were a force the forest and the world would have to reckon with.
