Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Betrayal in the Mist

Lyra.

The world slowed. Mist clung to my skin, cold and suffocating. The masked figure tilted their head, studying me like prey. Every nerve in my body screamed recognition, memories clawing through my mind like jagged knives.

"Who are you?" I whispered, my voice trembling, barely audible over the pounding of my own heart.

They said nothing. Instead, they lunged, fast, precise, lethal.

The Dark Alpha slammed into them mid-air, bodies colliding with earth-shattering force. Trees splintered. Branches exploded in splinters. The forest shook violently.

"Run!" he barked.

I didn't. A roar of raw energy tore through me, fire and shadow coiling along my limbs. I raised my hands, flames twisting into glowing ribbons that wrapped around the masked figure, slamming them backward. They crashed into the ground, mask cracking under the force.

For one heartbeat, our eyes met. Recognition struck like lightning.

"No…" I breathed.

"You?" My voice cracked. "Why?"

The mask was ripped away, revealing eyes that glowed with unnatural red fire. My chest tightened, pain slicing deeper than any blade.

"You betrayed me," I whispered, voice shaking.

They sneered.

"You betrayed us by surviving.

You were weak. Now… look at you."

Rage and sorrow collided inside me.

Flames flared hotter, shadow twisting around my legs like serpents.

The forest seemed to respond, leaves twisting, roots rising from the earth to trip and entangle.

The Dark Alpha moved instantly, shadow smashing into our former friend like a hammer.

The masked figure snarled, forcing him back, but the combined surge of our bond pushed them to the ground.

"You've grown strong," he growled, fangs bared.

"But strength without control is dangerous."

I stepped forward, hands igniting with fire and black shadow, drawing on everything I had learned since the bond.

Energy whipped from my palms, searing the mist, slicing through roots, and hitting the masked figure with precise force.

They stumbled, eyes wide with disbelief.

Pain lanced through my chest not from the fight, but from betrayal.

"I trusted you," I hissed, flames licking the air around me.

"And you… turned on me?"

The red-eyed figure roared, claws flashing, striking the ground with enough force to send shards of bark and stone flying. I dodged instinctively, shadow curling around me like armor.

The Dark Alpha leapt again, intercepting, teeth sinking into their shoulder, claws raking in tandem.

Power surged. Fire and shadow coiled around me, syncing with his energy, binding us in a deadly dance of attack and defense. Every strike was precise, every dodge instinctual. The mist churned with the heat of our battle, sparks flying, roots snapping, the forest itself trembling beneath our feet.

Finally, with a massive surge of combined energy, the masked figure was slammed unconscious, pinned beneath a tangle of shadow and fire. Smoke curled around them as the forest fell silent once more.

The Dark Alpha turned to me instantly, gripping my shoulders.

"Are you hurt?"

I shook my head, trembling from adrenaline and shock.

"Good." He pressed his forehead to mine, golden eyes intense.

"Because if anything happened to you"

The forest fell silent. Too silent. The moon above pulsed, silver and bright, bathing the clearing in light that seemed alive. My mark burned hotter than ever, searing into my skin as energy surged uncontrollably through me.

He stiffened. "The moon… it's reacting to you."

"What does that mean?" I gasped, trying to steady my racing heart.

"Your power isn't just rare," he said, voice darkening.

"You're tied to something ancient. Something… older than this forest, older than the world itself."

A scream ripped across the distance.

Not human.

Not wolf.

Something else entirely. Its eyes glowed red, larger than any creature I had ever seen, and its roar shook the very ground beneath us.

The forest parted before it, revealing the monster rising from the shadows.something older, hungrier, darker than anything alive.
