Chapter 20
The following morning, Wayne realized their salt supply had run dry. He gathered some fresh game and headed to Chief Hal's dwelling to make a trade, but he hadn't even reached the door before he was intercepted by Lara.
Lara had been simmering with a bitter resentment ever since Luce began ignoring her. Since the serpent was rarely seen leaving the house these days, she had no one to lash out at—until she saw Wayne.
She stepped directly into his path, her expression arrogant. "What do you think you're doing here?"
Wayne barely spared her a glance, attempting to brush past. Lara bLuced him again, her eyes landing on the meat he carried. "The tribe is low on salt. You're wasting your time; you should just go home."
Ignoring her completely, Wayne darted around her and knocked firmly on Hal's door. Lara stamped her foot in a fit of pique and followed him inside as the Chief opened the door and ushered them in.
