I dropped my pen when my office door swung open without a knock. Rhys filled the doorway, looking completely unbothered, like he had only stepped out for a quick break and had casually returned.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, standing up fast.
He stepped in and closed the door, grinning. "Missed you. Decided I wanted to see you. so I drove up. And here I am."
I stared at him. "You drove two hours and didn't think to call first? Rhys, I'm swamped. I've got back-to-back meetings and a mountain of files. A heads-up would've been nice."
He dropped into the chair across from my desk and shrugged. "Didn't want to spoil the surprise. I'm your mate. I shouldn't need an appointment to see you."
I crossed my arms. "We've talked about this. And even if you were my mate—"
"—which is I am…your mate."
"—I still have a job. I can't just drop everything because you decided to be spontaneous."
