I knocked on the door at exactly seven. It swung open fast.
Elise stood there in an oversized shirt, hair sticking up on one side. She rubbed her eye and squinted at me.
"Morning," I said. "Cute hair."
She snorted. "Shut up." She turned and headed for the kitchen. "Come in before the whole hallway sees me like this."
I closed the door behind me and followed. She filled the kettle and pulled out the tea without asking. I leaned against the counter and watched her move.
"So," she said, back to me. "How was the big college reunion? Your friends throw a good party?"
"It was fine. Nothing crazy." I kept my tone even. "Just catching up."
She glanced over her shoulder. "Uh-huh. And these friends have names?"
"Old guys from my program." I could tell she wasn't buying the whole story, but I didn't feel like filling in the blanks.
Elise handed me the tea and started the coffee maker for herself. "Where'd you end up sleeping, anyway?"
