Chapter 7 - The Bitter Friend

Ethan's closest friend, once a believer in his talent, now shook his head with a bitter laugh. "Maybe writing isn't for everyone," they said, and the words pierced Ethan deeper than any rejection letter. He remembered all the nights he had stayed up, scribbling feverishly, skipping meals, forsaking social gatherings, hoping to make his dream come alive. Every sacrifice seemed wasted now.

The friend's success contrasted sharply with his own failure. Parties, promotions, recognition—he had none of that. Yet, the ache in his chest wasn't envy; it was grief for the life he had forfeited, the opportunities he had surrendered for stories that no one wanted to read. He wanted to scream, to show the world that his words had power, that he had lived through pain that could move hearts—but the voice remained trapped in his throat.

Alone, Ethan returned to his room, slamming the door behind him. The darkness welcomed him like an old companion. He crumpled another page and wept, not just for his failures, but for the betrayals of friendship, for a world that seemed indifferent to suffering, and for the man he was becoming—hollow, unseen, and defeated.
