Chapter 6 - Chapter Seven: The Rules of Memory

The apartment felt unusually quiet that evening. Mina sat at the small kitchen table, a cup of tea cooling in front of her, fingers tracing the rim absently. Liam was nearby, spreading the notebook open on the counter, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Okay," he said finally, looking up at her. "We need a plan. Something to help you remember… even if your mind doesn't want to cooperate."

Mina nodded slowly, feeling a mix of anxiety and hope. "…A plan?"

"Yes," Liam said, his voice calm but firm. "We can't fight the forgetting itself, but we can build routines. Signals. Triggers. Things your heart—and eventually your mind—can latch onto."

She frowned. "…Like what?"

He picked up a pen and began writing on a sticky note. "Photos. Notes. Videos. Daily reminders. Journals. Little rituals that remind you who you are, and who we are. Things that say: This is us. This is what matters."

Mina's chest tightened. "…So… if I forget… I'll be able to find my way back?"

Liam's lips curved into a small, sad smile. "At least part of the way. I can't guarantee everything… but I can promise I'll be there. Every step. Every week. Until your memory catches up—or until we find another way."

She took a deep breath. "…Okay. Let's try it."

The first few days were awkward. Small rituals they established—a morning handshake, a word they whispered to anchor the moment, pictures taped in the notebook—felt strange and forced. Mina struggled to follow instructions, forgetting which photos corresponded to which notes, which phrases triggered what feelings.

But Liam never scolded. He never sighed or showed frustration. He guided her gently, repeating instructions patiently, encouraging smiles when she succeeded, holding her hand when she faltered.

One evening, as they sat together flipping through the notebook, Mina paused. "…I feel like I… should know all of this. But I don't."

"That's okay," Liam said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "It's not about knowing. It's about feeling. You don't have to remember everything perfectly. You just… have to trust yourself… and trust me."

Her chest ached at the simplicity—and the truth—of his words. "…I do trust you," she admitted, voice barely above a whisper. "Even if I forget. Even if I can't remember…"

Liam's eyes softened. "…Then your heart is doing its job. That's the part that matters most."

A sudden ping from her phone broke the moment. An unknown number flashed urgently. Liam leaned over. "…Maybe it's Claire again," he said cautiously.

Mina hesitated, then answered. "…Hello?"

"Mina," the voice said, tense and hurried. "We… need to talk. There's someone asking questions about your condition. Someone asking questions about your past. Be careful."

Mina froze. Her pulse quickened. "…Who… who is it?"

"I don't know," the voice replied. "But it feels… serious. Just… trust no one for now. And don't go anywhere alone."

She ended the call, turning to Liam. "…What does that mean?" Her chest felt tight, a cold fear settling over her.

He pulled her close, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "…It means we need to be careful. But it doesn't mean we stop. It doesn't mean we give up. We keep building, little by little, day by day. We protect you, we protect us."

Mina nodded, leaning into him. "…I don't want to lose this… lose you."

"You won't," Liam said softly. "…Not if I can help it."

That night, they stayed up late, adding more photos to the notebook, recording little messages for the days she might forget, practicing the words and gestures that would anchor her memory.

For the first time, Mina felt like they had a weapon against the forgetting—a fragile, imperfect weapon, but one they could wield together.

And as she drifted to sleep, leaning against him, she realized something terrifying and exhilarating at the same time: even if her memory failed her, even if she forgot everything else, Liam's love might be the one thing she could never lose.

But outside, in the shadows of the city, someone was already watching—waiting for the right moment to turn that fragile hope into a threat they couldn't ignore.
