Chapter 8 - Chapter Nine: The Day She Forgot

The morning sun streamed weakly through the blinds, but it did little to warm the chill in Mina's chest. Today felt… different.

She sat on the edge of the bed, notebook open, flipping through the familiar pages. Each photo, each note, each recorded message—anchors she had built painstakingly—stared back at her. But for the first time, they seemed… foreign.

Her hands shook. "…I don't… I don't remember any of this," she whispered, voice barely audible.

Liam was already up, quietly making coffee in the kitchen. The smell of it should have been comforting. Instead, it felt like a cruel reminder of everything she was losing.

He noticed her hesitation and came over, gently placing his hands on her shoulders. "…Hey," he said softly. "It's okay. Take a breath. We go slow. One step at a time."

Mina's chest tightened. "…I'm scared," she admitted. "I… I think… I might forget you today."

Liam swallowed, though his voice remained steady. "…Then we start over. Like every week. I'll remind you. I'll show you who we are. Together."

Her fingers trembled over the notebook. "…But… what if it doesn't work? What if today… I forget everything? You… me… us?"

"You won't," he said firmly. "Your heart remembers. Even if your mind doesn't. That part… that part is yours forever."

She wanted to believe him. She needed to. But as Liam reached for her hand, she recoiled slightly, the anchor failing her. "…I… I don't know you," she said quietly. "I… I don't know why I should trust you."

Pain flickered across his eyes, but he masked it quickly. "…That's okay," he said, voice soft. "You don't have to. I'll stay anyway."

The day passed in a blur of repetition. Liam walked her through the routines—reviewing notes, looking at photographs, rehearsing phrases that were meant to trigger recognition. Every time she faltered, he remained patient, coaxing, guiding, never showing frustration.

By afternoon, a storm had begun outside, the wind rattling the windows. Mina's memory had begun slipping faster than usual. The photos blurred in her mind. Names felt like whispers in a cave she could no longer reach.

She sat in the chair, staring at Liam. "…Who are you?" Her voice cracked, the words raw and small.

"I'm Liam," he said, kneeling in front of her. "…I love you. I've loved you since the first time we met. Even when you forget me, I'll be here."

Mina's chest tightened painfully. "…I… don't remember loving you."

"You don't have to," he said softly. "You just… feel it. That's enough. That's what matters."

Tears slid down her cheeks as the storm outside mirrored the turmoil in her chest. "…It hurts," she whispered. "…I want to remember. I want… to keep this."

Liam took her hands in his. "…I know. That's why I'm here. And we'll keep trying. Every week, every day. Until you remember—or until we find another way."

The hours stretched. By evening, the storm had passed, leaving silence in its wake. Mina leaned against Liam, exhausted, her mind a maze of gaps and shadows. Yet, somewhere deep inside, a spark remained. A spark that defied the forgetting.

"…I feel… something," she murmured, fingers brushing his. "I don't remember… the details. I don't remember why… but… I want this. I want you."

Liam's chest tightened, a mixture of relief and lingering fear. "…That's all I need," he whispered. "Your heart remembers. That's enough for both of us."

Outside, the city lights blinked through the darkness. Mina didn't remember everything. She didn't remember him fully. But she felt him.

And in that feeling, fragile yet unyielding, love—stubborn, impossible love—remained.

This chapter heightens emotional stakes by showing Mina's memory faltering at a critical time, forcing Liam to support her entirely from trust and heart, not memory. It sets up for chapters where the external threat and emotional tension converge.
