Chapter 9 - Chapter Ten: The Stranger’s Game

Mina and Liam had settled into a fragile rhythm, each day a delicate dance of memory triggers and reminders. But the envelope, the phone call, and the growing unease had left a shadow over their routines.

That evening, the knock came again. Louder this time, sharper, insistent. Mina froze. Her heart raced. Liam's jaw tightened as he moved to the door first.

When he opened it, a tall figure stood in the hallway—a stranger, face partly shadowed, eyes sharp and calculating. A folder clutched in one hand.

"Liam?" the stranger said, voice smooth, controlled. "…And you must be Mina. I've been expecting you."

Mina's chest tightened. "…Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling despite herself.

The stranger smiled thinly. "Someone concerned… about your condition, Mina. About what you're capable of remembering—or forgetting. And about the people around you."

Liam stepped in front of her. "…What do you want?"

"I want… cooperation," the stranger said. "…And information. You're a subject of interest, Mina. Your memory… your condition… it isn't just unusual—it's valuable. And some people… some people want to exploit it."

Mina's pulse spiked. "…Exploit me?"

The stranger nodded. "…I'm not here to hurt you. Not yet. But your routines… your attachments… they're being monitored. And your repeated memory lapses… they create vulnerabilities. Vulnerabilities others might use."

Liam's hands clenched into fists. "…You're threatening her."

"I'm offering a choice," the stranger said smoothly. "Compliance… or complications. If you continue ignoring the warnings, the consequences could be… significant. For both of you."

Mina's stomach dropped. "…Warnings? What warnings?"

"Your phone calls, your deliveries… the signals we've been sending. You've noticed them, haven't you?" The stranger's gaze flicked to Liam. "…Every week, we watch. Every week, we see who you meet. And yes… we know about your connection."

Mina's chest tightened. Her mind scrambled, fragments of the week blurring into panic. "…Connection?"

Liam stepped forward, voice low and firm. "…You won't touch her. She's not part of your games."

The stranger raised an eyebrow, almost amused. "…Games? I prefer 'study.' Observation. But don't worry. I don't act alone. And soon, you'll see… there are consequences to emotional instability, especially in subjects like Mina."

Mina shivered, gripping Liam's hand. "…What… what do you want from me?"

"Simple," the stranger said, handing her the folder. "Information about your condition. Your memory cycles. Your routines. Who you trust. And… who loves you."

Mina looked at Liam, fear mirrored in her eyes. "…I… I can't give it to them. I—"

"You can't?" the stranger said, voice cold. "…That will make things… difficult. But don't worry. We're patient."

With a final, calculating glance, the stranger turned and left, the door clicking shut behind them. Silence fell, heavy and suffocating.

Mina collapsed into Liam's arms, trembling. "…I don't understand. Why me? Why us?"

Liam held her tightly, whispering into her hair. "…Because you're special, Mina. And because they can't control what your heart feels. They don't understand… they'll never understand what we have."

Her tears fell freely now. "…I don't even remember… everything. And yet… I feel it. I feel you."

"That's all that matters," Liam said firmly. "…Your heart remembers. And we'll face this. Together. Always. No matter what they throw at us."

Mina clung to him, drawing strength from the one constant she could trust. The notebook, the routines, the rituals—they were fragile, but they were theirs. And as long as her heart remembered Liam, nothing outside could break them completely.

But outside, shadows lingered. Watching. Waiting. Knowing that the fragile thread connecting Mina and Liam might be the one thing they could never control—and the one thing that would make every move dangerous.
