Chapter 23 - Name of the Moon

The evaluation field had not dispersed.

Its light still rotated slowly above the courtyard, scanning, analyzing, recording.

But its behavior had changed.

It was no longer treating Li Feng as an isolated anomaly.

It was treating two entities as a connected structure.

Li Feng stood still, his gaze fixed on the girl across from him.

Her presence remained calm, unmoving—like moonlight that did not belong to any wind.

The instructor beside them took a step back.

"This result is… unstable," she muttered.

But Li Feng wasn't listening.

Inside his system:

[Resonance Link: ACTIVE]

[Dual System Feedback Detected]

The sensation was not forceful.

It was balanced.

As if something inside him that had always been irregular had briefly found an external reference point.

He narrowed his eyes slightly.

"…Heart of the Moon."

The moment the words left his mouth—

The girl's expression changed slightly.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

She corrected him immediately, voice calm but firm.

"Don't call me that."

A pause.

Her gaze met his directly.

"Call me 明月心 (Míng Yuè Xīn)."

Li Feng blinked once.

"…Míng Yuè Xīn."

She nodded slightly.

"That's what my friends call me."

A brief silence followed.

The evaluation field above them flickered once.

[Name Registration Update Detected]

[Peer Identifier Synced: 明月心]

The instructor looked between them, her expression tightening.

"That wasn't part of the protocol…"

But no one responded.

Because the system had already moved past her authority layer.

Li Feng studied her quietly.

"…Your system reacts differently around me."

Míng Yuè Xīn did not deny it.

"It doesn't react."

She paused.

"It recognizes."

That word lingered in the air longer than it should have.

Li Feng's system gave a faint pulse.

Not instability.

Not conflict.

Something closer to awareness.

The instructor finally stepped forward again.

"Enrollment is complete."

Her tone was now controlled, careful.

"You will both be assigned to the Anomaly Integration Cohort."

A pause.

"Separate living quarters. Shared evaluation cycles."

She hesitated slightly before continuing.

"And joint synchronization testing."

Li Feng frowned slightly.

"…Synchronization testing?"

The instructor avoided direct explanation.

"You will understand in due time."

That answer was not reassuring.

But before Li Feng could press further—

Míng Yuè Xīn spoke quietly.

"It means they want to see what happens when two unstable systems stay in proximity."

Her tone was neutral.

Not fearful.

Not excited.

Simply factual.

Li Feng glanced at her.

"…And you agreed to that?"

She met his gaze.

"I was assigned here for the same reason you were."

A pause.

"We are both classified as unresolvable."

Silence settled again.

But this time, it felt different.

Not like uncertainty.

Like alignment under observation.

The instructor gestured toward the exit path of the courtyard.

"Move. You'll be escorted to the integration sector."

As they walked, the academy revealed itself further.

Structures shifted in subtle ways as they passed—like the environment was adjusting to their combined presence.

Li Feng noticed it first.

The system reactions around them were no longer random.

They were patterned.

Predictable.

And centered around both of them together.

He spoke quietly.

"…This place isn't just studying us."

Míng Yuè Xīn answered without looking at him.

"No."

A pause.

"It's learning from us."

Li Feng's eyes narrowed slightly.

That distinction mattered.

A lot more than it should have.

Because it meant they were not just subjects.

They were inputs.

And the academy was building something from the interaction.

Ahead, the corridor widened into a suspended transit gate.

Beyond it waited the Integration Sector.

Where anomalies were not judged.

But combined.

And recorded.

Together, they stepped forward.

And for the first time since arrival—

The system did not classify them separately.

It classified them as one variable.# Chapter 23: Name of the Moon
