Chapter 28 - First Ripples of Influence

The silence inside the unit did not last long.

Not because anything broke it—

but because the system itself began to notice them again.

Li Feng stood near the window-like interface panel, observing the layered city of Node 7. Ming Yue Xin remained slightly behind him, her gaze calm but attentive.

Outside, life continued.

But not unchanged.

---

A student walking across a skybridge suddenly paused mid-step.

Their system interface flickered.

[ROUTE RECALIBRATION DETECTED]

They blinked.

"…Huh?"

Then, without explanation, they turned slightly and took a different path.

A minor deviation.

Almost meaningless.

Except it was not isolated.

---

Elsewhere in the node:

A training simulation group recalculated their formation mid-exercise.

A system companion construct briefly re-synced its behavior pattern.

A ranking interface delayed its update cycle by 0.3 seconds before correcting itself.

Small inconsistencies.

Scattered.

But present.

---

Inside the unit, Ming Yue Xin spoke quietly.

"It's starting."

Li Feng didn't turn.

"…What is?"

She answered without hesitation.

"The environment is adjusting to our presence."

A pause.

"Not consciously."

A slight correction.

"Structurally."

---

Li Feng exhaled slowly.

"So we're affecting things just by existing here."

Ming Yue Xin nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And the system is recording every deviation."

---

Another ripple occurred outside.

This one closer.

A nearby residential corridor lighting system flickered briefly as Li Feng's system signature passed through a shared data channel.

A student outside stopped walking.

Looked around.

Then frowned.

"…Why does it feel like my system is lagging?"

No answer appeared.

Only recalibration.

---

Li Feng finally turned slightly.

"…This is slower than the core tests."

Ming Yue Xin responded.

"But wider."

A pause.

"In the core, we broke tests."

"Here…"

She glanced toward the city.

"We are rewriting patterns."

---

A soft notification appeared in both of their interfaces.

---

[OBSERVATION UPDATE]

[PAIR INFLUENCE DETECTED IN NODE ENVIRONMENT]

[IMPACT LEVEL: MINOR → EXPANDING]

[RECOMMENDATION: CONTINUE MONITORING WITHOUT INTERVENTION]

---

Li Feng read it.

"…They're letting it continue."

Ming Yue Xin nodded.

"For now."

---

A silence followed.

Not empty.

But heavy with implication.

Then Li Feng spoke again.

"…If every interaction changes something here…"

He paused.

"…then everything around us becomes part of the test."

Ming Yue Xin answered softly.

"It already is."

---

Outside, the ripple effect expanded again.

A ranking board updated slightly slower than usual.

A system tutorial prompt changed wording for a single student before reverting.

A low-level anomaly user unknowingly copied a behavior pattern they had just observed near Li Feng.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing visible as a crisis.

But the system layer was no longer static.

It was adaptive around them.

---

Inside the observation layer far above Node 7, analysts reviewed the growing data stream.

One line repeated twice.

Then three times.

"Behavioral drift confirmed."

"Correlation with anomaly pair presence increasing."

"Non-local influence detected."

A pause.

Then:

"Recommendation unchanged: continue observation."

But another line appeared beneath it.

Smaller.

Less certain.

"System response variance rising beyond expected model thresholds."

---

Back inside the unit, Ming Yue Xin turned slightly toward Li Feng.

"…We should expect attention soon."

Li Feng nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"But not resistance yet."

She met his gaze.

"Not yet."

---

A faint pause followed.

Then Li Feng spoke quietly.

"…So this is how it grows."

Ming Yue Xin nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Slow enough that no one notices immediately."

A brief silence.

Then she added:

"But irreversible once it spreads."

---

Outside, Node 7 continued to shift in subtle ways.

One deviation at a time.

One recalibration at a time.

All traced back—directly or indirectly—to two new arrivals who were no longer being tested.

They were being integrated into reality itself.

And reality was beginning to adjust.
