Chapter 28: The Dragon's Soul, The Inner Flame
There was no grand ceremony. There was only the quiet, resolute nod from Erza, the determined clenching of Gray's fists, Lucy's deep, steadying breath, and Natsu's fierce, unwavering grin. One by one, they stepped through the shimmering doorway, leaving the dusty storeroom of Fairy Tail behind.
The world they entered was vast and silent. A featureless white plain stretched to an infinite horizon under a sky with no sun. The air was still, neutral, holding no temperature. It was a place of pure potential.
I focused my will, and another doorway of light formed beside Natsu. Through it, he could feel an immense, oppressive heat and see the angry red glow of molten rock. It smelled like home.
"Alright! Let's do this!" he yelled, running through the portal without a second's hesitation.
The world he entered was the complete opposite of the Nexus. He stood on a jagged obsidian plain, the air thick with sulfur and shimmering with heat. A great, slumbering volcano dominated the horizon, and rivers of lava flowed like sluggish water, casting a permanent, fiery twilight over the landscape.
"Feel it? I feel it!" Natsu insisted, punching his chest. "I'm all fired up!"
Natsu grumbled but did as he was told. He squeezed his eyes shut, his brow furrowed in concentration. For a full minute, he stood perfectly still. "...I don't feel anything," he said, frustrated. "This is dumb! Can't I just punch something?"
I floated a short distance away.
I let a tiny fraction of my own Aura flare, a gentle pulse of calm, blue energy. To Natsu, it was like a single, cool drop of rain in the middle of his internal furnace.
"Whoa! What was that?" he asked, his eyes snapping open.
He closed his eyes again, his frustration replaced by a hunter's focus. He chased the memory of that cool drop, searching for a similar sensation within himself. He pushed past the roaring fire of his Dragon Slayer magic, past the anger, past the excitement. He went deeper, searching for the quiet place I had spoken of.
And then, he found it.
It was small, almost imperceptible beneath the raging inferno of his magic. It was a tiny, steady, intensely hot point of light, like a compressed star. It wasn't loud. It wasn't chaotic. It was just... there. It was the core of his being.
"It's... small," Natsu said, his voice uncharacteristically quiet.
Natsu opened his hand. He focused on the tiny star within him, pouring his concentration into it. He tried to draw it out, to shape it. A few weak sparks sputtered and died. He growled in frustration, his magic flaring instinctively, creating a large, wasteful fireball that dissipated into the hot air.
It took hours. Hours of Natsu fighting against every instinct he had. He wanted to roar, to punch, to burn. But he kept returning to that quiet, internal star. He learned to ignore the urge to explode, focusing instead on a gentle, steady pressure.
Finally, something changed. He held out his palm, his expression serene, his eyes closed. He wasn't gritting his teeth or trembling with effort. He was calm. He found the inner star and gently, carefully, nudged it.
A flame appeared in his palm. It was no bigger than a candle flame. But it was unlike any fire he had ever made. It did not flicker. It did not waver. It was a solid, perfectly stable teardrop of pure, white-hot energy, tinged with the same magenta hue his fire had taken on during the Lullaby fight. It emitted no smoke and barely any ambient heat, yet the obsidian rock beneath his hand began to glow and melt from its focused intensity.
Natsu opened his eyes and stared at the tiny, perfect flame. He could feel it, connected to him not by magic, but by his own life force. It was a part of him. He held in his hand a flame of pure control.
A slow grin spread across his face. It wasn't his usual wild, toothy grin. This one was different. It was sharper, more focused, and held the quiet confidence of a dragon who had just discovered a whole new way to burn. The first lesson was complete.
